Ian McKellan is my all time favorite Magneto. Seeing this movie in theaters when I was a kid, the scene when he talks to Pyro in the jet was so affecting. If I was having a crappy week, and someone like him gave me that line: "You're a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different." ...I'd follow him to the ends of the Earth, too. And I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but when Mystique seduces the guard in the form of that blonde lady? That's Rebecca Romijn: Mystique's actor without the full-body make-up.

Also, Mystique having a bigger role in this movie allows the other actors to have fun out of character (in character for Mystique) moments, like Mystique-as-Stryker blowing a kiss at the real Stryker and his henchmen. Extra fun!

The woman Wolverine fights is named Lady Deathstrike, and she is actually a really important character in Wolverine's lore. Her father actually INVENTED the process where Adamantium can be bonded to bone. When her father was murdered, Lady Deathstrike mistakenly believed Wolverine was the one who killed him, so she vowed revenge. In the film she just has her own Adamantium skeleton and claws, but in the comics she goes even further to get revenge and has herself turned into a cyborg.

When Jean's eyes and body turns orange flame like, it's a tease of her true power using from the Phoenix Force. The Phoenix is a cosmic entity who does end up using Jean's body as a host. As discussed in your intro, the big reason the X-Men are looked down on by society for being "different" is because the X-Men comics first came out during the civil rights movement of the 1960s when prejudice and racism were very mainstream at the time. The X-Men creators thought it would be interesting to incorporate this into the comics.
@vinnycordeiro

And so very cleverly done. In the Marvel comics universe, the super beings that acquired their powers from external sources are accepted and well seen by society, but those who are born with them are feared. A perfect picture of the real world.

It wasn't why the xmen were created. this is a what a lot of people try to say regarding parallels of mutants and racism. being a mutant was a simple and easy way to explain why these character had powers. Then people kept asking about relation to civil rights so people like Stan Lee finally said "sure ok". but this is what Stan Lee had to say about how he created the X-Men: "I think it was the fact that the Fantastic Four had sold so well. And we figured, my publisher and I, figured why not do another group? My problem was, what powers would I give them? Because with the Fantastic Four, we already had a guy who could fly, who could burst into flame, we had a woman who was invisible with a force field, we had a guy who could stretch, and we had a big strongest man in the world. So it wasn’t easy. Then, once I figured out what powers they’d have, I had to figure, how did they get their powers? And they were all separate people that weren’t connected to each other, so I knew that would be a helluva job. And I took the cowardly way out, and I figured, hey, the easiest thing in the world: they were born that way. They were mutants. So I thought that would be one way to get around having to find new origins. So I brought the idea to my publisher…"

@@shinrapresident7010 Attacking the president is illegal. If mutants have equal rights, that wouldn't prevent prosecuting them for illegal actions. @@razorsfury6519 It wasn't the reason they came to be in the first place, that's true; but you'd be fooling yourself thinking they have little to do with the whole civil rights and LGBTIQ+ movements later on. There's a reason why they increased their popularity and started drawing parallels to real life struggles in the upcoming years. There's more to a character than its inception. After all comics don't exist in a vacuum isolated from their historical context, they change with it. Think of Daredevil, it was a blind man with a yellow suit jumping rooftops when it started. And after receiving complaints from readers to change it, Stan Lee just said without putting much thought: _"ok what about red?"_ as a total random remark and they just rolled with it. And yet no one in their right mind would argue that his famous red suit has no significance with the whole devil/angel dichotomy and the religious overtones all over Matt Murdock's character today. That's kinda the beauty of the whole thing, more often than not unintended features change and develop comic characters far beyond the limitations they were born with.

Basic Civil rights is one thing but YOU would be fooling yourself if you think it has anything to do with black american civil rights. This is more closely related to the persecution of Jewish people as black Americans never had to be register, tagged and be tracked by the government. This is not the same as simply being marked as a slave that happened 200 years ago. the daredevil example you give has nothing to do with this or relate to it because stan lee made a change in the uinform. making a change is because of a decision is not the same as people asking about it 20 years later and the creators saying "sure ok"

There are many themes connected to the X-Men(comics and films) that still speak to us today as they did back in the '60s. One of the main themes in this one is the lengths some individuals and their followers will go to get what they want, even if they have to violate the laws they once swore to uphold. Stryker alone would have been up on charges of inhuman medical testing, slavery, and attempted genocide with treason added if the courts could prove it. How often is it announced in the news of people trying, and in some cases partly succeeding, to create civil unrest against an entire group of people because of the actions of a few? Far too many in my lifetime and they keep happening. Stan Lee was a master of his writing when he created these characters and his co-creators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko brought his words to the page as illustrations in all these comic books. A wise man once said: Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right. PS: Nightcrawler is one of a few MARVEL characters that is more overt with his faith. The other one that comes to mind is Daredevil.

this movie is just unbelievable. I think it stands out more now that we've in the glut of superhero stuff for years, but it just does things differently. It's got actual subtext and themes, it's completely sincere rather than glib, it has sexuality (of which the MCU is particularly devoid), incredibly creative action, etc etc. It's about hatred and genocide - that mutants are a particular persecuted group rather than miscellaneously superpowered-of-their-own-accord heroes elsewhere means you get a way deeper subtextual richness. And the cast is just astonishing - Stewart, McKellen and Cox all sharing scenes! Wild! Thank you for reminding me!

Not revealed in this series but in this series and in the comics, Night Crawler is the son of Raven Darkholme AKA Mystique and a supernatural being named Azazel. There are story lines in the comics that have Saber tooth as his father but , his abilities would point to Azazel.

The one thing that I've always loved about the X-Men is that the stories have never really been black and white heroes and villains, but constantly shifting sands of shades of grey.

I was 11 when this movie came out and saw it and all of my friends had so many questions about the ending like you. Fortunately, because I'm a nerd 🤓, I had a big book of Xmen information that I went into and found out all the info on Jean Grey's comic history and what the ending meant. I still have that book today 20+ years later

I *love* the Fox X-Men movies. Not all of them are great, but even the bad ones have some good things about them. When Disney bought Fox and pulled the plug on the franchise, it really was the end of an era. P.S. Watch all of them in release date order, including both Deadpool movies and The New Mutants. Don't skip anything, and don't try to find a "correct" order.

The guy with the metal skin is Collosus before Deadpool 2 did the character correctly. It's meant to be the same version but complicated given with what happens later in Days of Future Past you might understand it when you get to it but every Fox X-Men fan has difficulty understanding the timeline.

"That's a lot of pops." xDD I'm so glad you decided to start the X-Men series! I saw your reaction to the first and I'm glad you enjoyed it, Addie! This one and the first are among one of my favorite X-Men movies! Everyone was amazing in this movie! I remember being so astonished with Nightcrawler's ability along with other mutants who either introduced or evolved with their powers! Lady Deathstrike battle (The lady who fought Wolverine) was amazing! I look forward to more X-Men films! :D

In the comics, Mystique is VERY old. Both her and Logan have mutant abilities that extend their lives. Nightcrawler is her son, and Rogue is her adoptive daughter. A lot of comic readers (myself included) were very annoyed that Fox either didn't know about character details like these, or simply didn't care about the source material.

11:02 The scene of Stryker's men invading the mansion is *so* cool. I loved seeing the mutants all show off their powers to escape or fight back, & it was a really cool way to be introduced to Colossus 11:35. It acc kinda reminds me of a similar scene from St Trinians tbh lol.

The guy who covered himself in Metal is a mutant called Colossus, Yes when Lady Deathstrike's (the girl with the metal claws) eye color went back to normal she was no longer controlled by Striker's serum. X-3 The Last Stand will answer your questions.

The big guy who can turn his skin metallic is Colossus, and was one of the main "New X-men" when the comic was rebooted back in the day. Sadly he never got much screen time or story development in the movies, as mutants are a dime a dozen in the comics, and the movies are very selective.

It's best to remember these aren't part of any 'universe' as Marvel did with many movies all working together to a final goal. Each explores a part of the Mutant experience.

Now that you've gotten through the first 2 X-Men movies, you'll probably want to watch the rest in the following order: X-Men: The Last Stand X-Men Origins: Wolverine X-Men: First Class The Wolverine (you'll want to watch this one after First Class but before the next one, because the mid-credit scene leads directly into...) X-Men: Days of Future Past X-Men: Apocalypse X-Men: Dark Phoenix Logan (takes place decades after the ending of Days of Future Past)
