Xplane is for simmers that want good default flight models and then add on scenery MSFS is for simmers that want good default scenery and then add on flight models.

I think the rain was amazing and the airport ground with all the cracks and water puddles were amazing. I will probably not get it for a year or so. Spent to much money on MS flight

I've always been a huge IL2/ROF player but now with a new rig I've finally been able to push the graphical fidelity in MSFS in VR to a point where the other sims just feel cartoonish, regardless of their truly awesome physics. I'm afraid it will be the same for me here... Your videos did make me excited to see where this goes, though!

Doing my PPL, MSFS 172 does great when it comes to how it feels. Its a great substitute! XP12 looks cool too.

Hi Steve, I stopped flying MSFS so much because I got fed up with the flight models being soooo easy and forgiving. Only just betted than FSX. Now I’m alive again, flying in VR is compelling. Thanks for sharing.

I will start training in a few months with an instructor, im 13 and im a serious simmer. Plus I love to create and develop aircraft for X-Plane. Currently I'm developing the sr72 darkstar from top gun for it. For the foreseeable future, x-plane all the way. And the same ui as xp11 is a good thing because I'm used to it and don't wanna learn a whole new UI. LR please keep this UI if you are reading.

The default planes in X-Plane are better than in MSFS but that doesn't mean you can't get as good immersion flight model wise with addon planes.

Very exciting to see a new flight simulator! Congratulations to the team at Laminar Research for putting in the long hours to get this released. It looks unmistakenly X-Plane with many subtle graphical improvements, the more I see the more I like it. The flight model looks rock solid as well. I think for existing users of X-Plane it's a no-brainer. I'll be staying with MSFS though as that also has a good flight model certainly if you stay within the performance envelope. Speaking of performance, MSFS in VR is also terrific and everything just looks a lot more polished. Most of all though I fly a simulator because I want to be immersed in a real-world location and that's where X-Plane's plausible but generic scenery falls down. I did use X-Plane 11 extensively for a while when Orbx TrueEarth was released but it's a faf and a hard disk hog and still is worst than MSFS and you also miss out on photogrammetry which for me is terrific. Microsoft Flight Simulator for me remains a technological marvel and an incredible experience. I'll be watching this closely to see how it pans out but for now I have no real interest to 're-purchase' X-Plane.

YES. Same easy user-interface, check. No more clear-screen/redraw weather transitions. I'm noticing the wind affecting the trees as well, big plus. If my 6TB of Ortho makes the seamless transition, I'll be happy. Mountain flying with photo-realistic Ortho in 3-D is absolutely essential for the best immersive scenery depth perception. MSFS mountain textures look the same as X-Plane's defaults, just randomized blanket-textures over some hills. Ortho gives you proper ridges and valleys on the mountain faces, and when the time of day matches the shadows in the photo-textures, you're as good as there. For strictly VR pilots, X-Plane will always dominate that department.

I think XPlane is great for pilots, and pilots in training due to having a better plane modeling, but for FS Enthusiasts the graphics of FS2020 make FS2020 the better option.

I've never played any of the X Plane simulators, but this one looks nice. I have been spending all my time in MSFS currently. Does it (or will it when out of Beta) have photogrametry for the real world like MSFS?

Please do a video on OpenComposite VR so we don't have to use steamvr with XP12

I will say though, I just copied over one of my helicopters from x-plane 11 and it works fine. And they overlay snow on top of Ortho scenery so I'll be interested to see how you get on with orbx if snow works on that.

I think I could see wobbling in the clouds through the prop? I believe this is caused by motion reprojection ("ASW" in Quest 2 terms) being on? Apart from that it looked reasonable to me but I yearn for MSFS quality graphics. I'll be very interested in what Orbx scenery enhancements can do.

Could you show some of the damage model? One thing that throws me moving from DCS to MSFS is that I can slam the plane down with no consequence, I'd love to see damage, prop strikes etc to punish bad flying rather than a fade to black if some rudementory limit is reached. I find that when I'm in VR that I have to lean all the way forward to see the outside from the cockpit otherwise it's a glaring white. If the sun visors are down it's ok. I can't find in the settings to what may be causing the issue

I can't read the glass cockpit numbers at all in my HP Reverb G2 with graphics maxed on a 3090. Can you read the instruments?

have they improved the functions for the Index controllers in this version of XPlane?, the controls were terrible with the Index controllers in XPlane 11, hoping the controls got better with the Valve Index and the Index controllers, it probably works good with the Meta touch controllers though, everything does

I was unable to run X-plane 12 demo in VR with my 3080 and Reverb G2. 8 fps on medium settings and sim crashes in a minute or two.

This actually looks pretty good to me. Aside from the shimmer it doesn't look half bad. I thought the rain effects and traffic actually looked better than MSFS and the runway skid marks and puddles looked good. The plane looks identical to the MSFS Cessna 172 steamgauge., I guess that's becuase it's just what they look like!

Thank you for the video. I do have a question. I'm running AMD 5900X and plan to upgrade my video card to either 3080ti or Radeon 6900xt and get reverb g2 headset. I already have x11 and will wait until x12 official release onc they clean it up. Do you think my intended setup will handle VR ? I also plan to add the honeycomb alpha yoke and bravo throttle setup aswell.

Tried the XPlane 12 demo version and it does not recognize my Reverb G2 controllers correctly, the graphics in VR need to be turned way down to stop the stuttering. I run a 3080ti and an Intel 8700k processor which work great for MSFS. I would like to demo the R22 but too many things to adjust. So I'll wait awhile until I have time to troubleshoot. Will be interesting to see what a little ortho and Reshade will do for this sim, though.

As far as VR, if it runs smooth on 3070 ti, I'd make the switch. Msfs is 90% crashes, tinkering, and 10% flying.

hello can someone please help me. im currently running Xplane12 on my pc... processor i5 8400, 64 bit. i can run the game Maxed out grahic scenery and it Runs Smooth as butter, But once i plug in my HTC vive VR..., the game plays really laggy.... and i have to turn everything down. What can i do to solve this? i love flying in VR.

I suppose it depends on whether you want a FLIGHT simulator or an animated Google maps. The best driving simulators don't necessarily have the best graphics but I'd only use one that felt like I was driving. I flew my first flight simulator in the late 1980's so they're not new to me.

My question can you see numbers and see instruments clear enough to read in VR !?

Would love to see a settings video for Reverb/XP12, I’m running a 3090 and G2, and my performance is terrible. It cannot sustain a minimum frame rate. I have no idea where to start looking….

how do you manage to have good performance ? with a 12900k and a 3090 I barely get more than 12 fps with my g2 , are you using steam vr ? if so at what resolution ?

would you say there is a drastically big diffrance between xpvr and msfs because for me there is in msfs it makes you feel like your acctually there whereas xplane is just the sim but you can look around

I had my very first VR flight experience in X-Plane 11. I ran it for a while with all the Orbx uk scenery. But since MSFS I’ve not touched it. Tbh I was expecting more graphically, still going to give it a try, but if it’s expensive I don’t think it’s worth it until it’s on sale. More than likely I’ll stick with MSFS for now. With MSFS 40th anniversary coming and DLSS and helicopters and the continued support, and having the entire world to play in, I’m not bothered if the flight model is not so realistic.

not a fan of MSFS in VR...DCS is great. XP11.55 is really good, and I like it better than FS. Dunno if I am going to get XP12 right now. I am not seeing the value proposition so far. Thanks for the vid and for what you do!

I tried out Xplane and can only compare it with Flyinside. Flyinside gives much better VR performance on my system no stuttering like in Xplane. My settings may need to be optimized. However in non VR mode Flyinside gives me 60 fps whereas i get around 25 fps in Xplane 12 only seen it jump to 55 fps when using a Boeing 737. I thought MSFS 2020 gave the best graphics.

Performance on the reverb G2 in the demo so far has been unplayable in VR. I have to turn the graphics settings way down to get anything close to usable performance and at that point it looks so bad that I'd rather just hop in MSFS, which looks better than XP12 on ultra anyway...

Do you know if they are adding DLSS ?

I like x-plane 11 flight model since ever, but I hate interacting with touch controllers, I find it bulky and uncomfortable. I hope VR mouse interaction is improved vs xp11, otherwise the only good point in purchasing xp12 (the flight model) does not worth the effort.

Anyone else having problems purchasing xplane12? I cant for the life of me get the payment to go thro even tho i have more then enough funds and tried 2 different payment types...

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to what the best or most enjoyable flight sim on the market is. All have their pros and cons. DCS is very entertaining as a unique flight sim, but ED are an average company and development team. IL-2 is great for instant action and dogfighting, I haven't invested enough time to list cons. I do enjoy MSFS but in my experience it has been very unstable to the point of where I no longer play it as often as I expect a plethora of issues or crashing to desktop. I am just about to buy X-Plane 12 to try that out. While I'm sure it's not without issues, since no game is, it certainly looks interesting enough to invest time in. The flight model looks on par with MSFS, although in MSFS I think the F-18, F-14 and other marketplace jets handle absolutely awfully with an extremely sensitive and twitchy flight-model. Hopefully that's not the case with X-Plane.

I was always curious why the Brits say "Bee ta" for the Greek letter B. I always thought it was pronounced "Beh ta", but I watched a video where a Greek fellow pronounced all of the Greek letters and B is pronounced "Vee ta". Interesting eh?

I sorta like the game but I like MSFS because you can plan flights and the MCDU actually works. The game needs a lot of work. I recommend against buying xplane 12 at this time. The game is less than half done.

I am a bit underwhelmed by it.. tried the Xplane demo this morning. So I have heard so much about flight model, it certainly feels very smooth but it also a little like flying on rails. Flying in the real world is not like that unless you fly in totally smooth air. MSFS feels more realistic to me for that reason, and the graphics in Xplane look very dated now in comparison.

If xplane flight model in 11 is still better than MSFS and xplane 12 still doesn't beat MSFS visually, then I can't really see what the USP is for 12?!

Sadly I don't think it stands a chance against MSFS. Appreciate there's a lot of dedicated followers of XP who swear blind the flight model is amazing. I'm sure it is, but the MSFS flight model isn't half bad either. The graphics in MSFS were revolutionary when it appeared. XP12 has a few nice new bits, but hasn't made the same quantum leap that MSFS did. For me personally, the VR experience is all about immersion, and I can't feel immersed if I'm looking at a cartoon out the window. Such a shame really, the simulation world would be even better if there was some healthy competition, but XP12 looks like it's out-classed.

The cloud are exactly the same as XP11 mod. Only difference is lighting engine and textures. Sad but true

I tried the demo and it just feels like X-Plane 11 with a graphics update. I started at my local field and there are very little 3D buildings around. XP11 had no 3D buildings at all around my local airfield. FM is a little better than MSFS. Landings feel a little more challenging also, like a real plane. Overall not worth the $60, maybe $30.

Hm. I have like 2000 hours on XP 11 and I am a real fan of the physics. Modded, XP 11 can look a lot better than vanilla. But MSFS really looks a lot better. I think many people are willing to accept the "only ok" MSFS flight physics in exchange for good graphics. XP has fallen way behind here and I am not sure if they can catch up. Also regarding satellite scenery, I think that will become state of the art.

The only thing xplane has going for it is the fluidity of flight model. And that's only splitting hairs with msfs2020 fm

Remember the bugy start of MSFS. And its a Beta. But, I love flying VR. And, VR means by eyes, thats why it should look as realistic as it can get. But XP doesnt. Sadly, I am so sad about that.

I own both, i have approx 1600hrs in msfs and maybe 20hrs in xp12, i thought that since its early access, xp12 was worth it and it would get better with time, however LR has made it clear they are never going to try and get the graphics/visuals of xp12 anywhere near msfs, so knowing that, i think xp12 will be left for dead in the long run! Which is sad because that in turn means no competition for msfs to keep them on there toes!! Msfs has said they will keep development going for 10years so it will continue to grow and improve, the only real thing xp12 needs is visuals which they said they wont do, so no brainer really.

I hate that I have to choose between modern graphics and a decent flight model.

MSFS VR is totally ruined because of the terrible terrible terrible lighting. Everything is beyond overexposed. And then if you try to use OpenXR Toolkit to compensate you can never get it right, it's always either too bright or too dark. It's absolute garbage and it's ridiculous that it's been left that way for so long. I feel that if they haven't fixed that by now then this is what to expect going forward and it makes the sim unusable for me. I ended up just uninstalling it the other day. In XP11 with Orbx TrueEarth, xVision and a few other add-ons it's as close as I've come to having it feel like a real flight. Like there are moments where things look so real that I forget that I'm flying a sim, and that's what I want. Also, like you mentioned in the video, the flight model is just so much better, whereas in MSFS the planes are just kind of bouncing around and feel clunky to fly.

Yep, I feel the same way too. XP 12 seems to me just like an update to the 11.6 version. Everything is kind of dead, even the clouds. Even if the simulator used google world, that wouldn't be enough either. I'm really disappointed, the rain effect is also exaggerated (somehow on or not).

I never liked xPlane 11. The performance was always way down. Any reasonable level of AA and shadows tanked the performance for me especially in VR. Also I found that I spent a lot of money on addons. Before MSFS2020 came out I would always prefer to use AeroFly FS2. From the look of this review and other early reviews I can't see me changing my mind especially with my i7 2070S HPReverb2 rig.

You find the interface, menu interface better than MSFS2020. That made me look surprised because I totally but respectfully disagree. It's terrible, a gigantic mess and immens unstable going to VR in my G2 and trying to go to settings is close to impossible and makes is crash trying, most certain in the wrong way, and it's a turnoff just like the wobbly MR like clouds all over. But I do like the flight dynamics but hate I can't lean closer to my gauges of closer to the window to look outside... head tracking works but can't get closer to stuff to look at it. All the cockpit dials and switches are one blurry mess just like the clouds... WIP 4 sure
