I hated this show when it was in prime time. I went out of my way to avoid it. I especially hated the character Kate the couple of times I was forced to watch it. Then, just a few years later, a local UHF station started repeating the episodes in the afternoons, five times a week. Not only did I get hooked on the show, but Kate turned out being my favorite character. Lol.... Go Figure! 😂

My mom hit a kid when I was about 10(I was not in the car). He darted out from hedges from her left on a bicycle, rolled up on her hood into the windshield and slid off. He broke his leg and was worried about his bike. The cops measured the skid marks my mom left and found she was well within the legal limits of driving. The mom started giving my mom a hard time, until several neighbors started showing up and defending her saying the kid was all over the roads all the time and not being watched. My mom then proceeded to her mom's, took 2 Valiums and had a shot - she was catatonic - it rattled her nerves something fierce. Funny thing was, this kid ended up sitting next to me about 7 years later at a study hall. We became friends when he told me the story and my mind was blown. We laughed and joked about it, but it took my mom quite a while to get over it.

I hit a Kid that was running along the sidewalk in the same direction. Next thing I know she turns and runs right in front of me. I hit her and she flew in the air and landed with a thud. I stopped and got out but others had stopped as well and she was still just laying there. I thought I had killed her. Then she all of a sudden gets up and starts yelling and running around. Someone was trying to comfort me as I sat in the car but once she started yelling and that I got angry. She wasn't speaking English so it took some time to find her Mother. I was told it wasn't my fault and to just go by the Police. I never forgot it either but I stayed angry for a long time. She had no business being alone and no reason to turn in the middle of the block and dash right into the road. Children must be taught to cross at corners and never come out from between two parked cars. Guess I'm still 😠 angry.

I also was bit on the shoulder by a stray cat that jumped on me ( I was about 3 and don’t remember it happening). My parents had to trap the cat so they could take it to be tested for rabies. I’m not sure where they took the cat, vet maybe? But they had to put the cat down and cut its head off to be tested. The cat didn’t have rabies.

Me, too! I recognized that guinea pig squeak immediately. The minute Buddy mentioned she was getting a raccoon... I thought, "oh crap, that is a BAD idea.." They're wild animals, and will need huge accommodations. Keeping one in a small cage like that is like keeping a goldfish in a Ziploc bag :/ Kate was not herself, as I would expect her to say "ABSOLUTELY not!" at the first mention of a raccoon. My guinea pigs would squeal in unison every time I opened the refrigerator door :)

That incident was traumatizing to my conscience to this day! & I was taught the biking "rules of the road. I think our schools today should teach not only bicycling etiquette, but pedestrian etiquette & homeschooling parents should incorporate the "rules of the road"as well!

@@vcrcookingYou call it nonsense, but stranger things than this have taken place in real life. Back in 2005 I had a feeling of dread that started on a Thursday night, and kept getting worse over Friday and Saturday. For some reason it seemed to have something to do with my motorcycle. Unfortunately, that was my only transportation at the time, and there was no other way for me to get to work. Always a cautious rider, I became ultra aware of my surroundings on the road. Sunday morning the dread was so great I wouldn't leave the house. I spent my day off channel surfing, trying to calm down. Around noon the dread started lifting, and an hour later I was back to normal. An hour after that, I got a long distance phone call. My sister had been killed riding a motorcycle with her husband that morning. How can something like that really be explained? She was pronounced dead at the local hospital a few minutes past noon. You can scoff, or you can call it nonsense. I know what I experienced, though.

Kate, the mom in this series, always struck me as cold and distant. Also, one thing that's odd in this episode is that she worries almost _constantly_ about the potential precognition of her dream. Well...acting style, anyway. We don't know this was how either of them were at home. People who knew James say nice things about him but OTOH fans who don't know actors tend to think the actors are just like their parts and that may not be true. James was pretty much just displaying the standard good guy "background" supportive style role. Matthew has a lost little boy-ish shruggie-shruggie thing that he still plays off of. I mean you're looking at acting roles. Neither seemed/seems (obviously James is long gone now) to be incredibly versatile - each nailed a "type" and has acted that particular part, more or less. (Straight man/good guy for James, straight man/little boyish for Matthew.) I'm not being disrespectful, I do like them both.

@@Juliet_Capulet I like your comment, I like your thinking...it isn’t superficial criticism based upon a limited perspective but the overall reality of actors & the expectation they’re expected to agree to based on the script written specifically for their character. @@XxowendanxX Wouldn't the woman who gave Buddy the raccoon to care for have known if the animal had had a rabies vaccination? Wouldn't the Lawrences have insisted on its being vaccinated before allowing it at their home? The hospital could have called her to find out that information and possibly gotten a rabies tag number, and that would have saved a lot of the uncertainty.

@@vivianpowell1732 the animal was found injured in the wild, he didn't have any kind of vaccination or any other type of medical certificate that one may find for a domestic animal. As far as the Lawrences not allowing the raccoon in the house due to safety concerns, this was the 1970s. The phenomenon of people attempting via procedures to create an entirely risk free existence is something that got it's start at some point over the last 20 to 30 years so no, Buddy wanted to help the raccoon get well and I'm sure it never crossed the Lawrences' mind for even a fleeting moment to forbid Buddy from bringing the raccoon in the house or otherwise attempting to do her part to help him get better.

@@XxowendanxX Really? You make the 1970s sound like ancient history. My family had two dogs back in the 1950s and we had them vaccinated for rabies every year and put their tags on. Both measures were required by our county, even for dogs such as ours who lived indoors with a fenced backyard for outdoor needs. One child in our community was bitten by a wild animal who escaped, so he had to receive the older treatment (3 shots in the stomach) that the doctor in this Family episode mentioned. The 1950s also saw the development of the polio vaccine for humans. Vaccines for measles and mumps came along in the 1960s. Our society was not naive about taking protective measures before the time when you came along, as you would have us believe. Your perspective suggests you are relatively young.

That's what I'm saying. I hate when animals are used in entertainment. And it is RIDICULOUS that they would observe the raccoon for any extended period before giving Buddy rabies vaccination. The minute you show even one symptom of rabies, you are dead, nothing can help you.

A raccoon is not a pet. And even if you were keeping one temporarily to try to rehab an injury or something (which I did not hear mentioned in the episode, anyway) it would be inhumane to keep it confined in such a tiny cage with no bedding or any soft material for it to lay on comfortably. Buddy shows her usual poor judgement in treating a wild animal this way and the parents for whatever reason go along with it. I realize that Kate is the sensible parent of the two of them and she was going through something of her own at the time so I will cut her some slack but Doug should also know better.

Airdate May 2nd, 1978. I remember seeing this when it aired. 40:34 Her precognitive dream came true, but Mrs. Lawrence was able to change it. Have you ever had a precognitive dream? I have. We only think time is linear, but it all happens at once and some people can tap into the future, especially in dreams. Anyway this was one of the best episodes. Too bad the others got so schmaltzy, and too bad Willie the dork was always around.

I think the explanation for precognition can be found in chaos theory. Albert Einstein once said, "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana." I can understand the appeal (appeel?) of the banana, but what do the time flies see in the arrow? No arrow I've ever seen would be good eating... HAIL ERIS! ALL HAIL DISCORDIA!!!

This is the episode everyone remembers best from the show because it was so freaky. The thing about this episode, though, is that it's not very well edited--it looks like at the speed they had been going, had Kate not stopped, she would have driven well beyond where the ball was before it bounced out into the street. (And so the boy would have been safe.) That sort of ruins the big moment at the end.
