6:51 I think this whole episode exists to sell us on Clay. He's the odd man out of the four main characters, everyone else on the team is incredibly acrobatic, while Clay is big and slow. While he almost never actually struggles in any of his encounters here, they're set up in a way to make us doubt that Clay can pull it off. Admittedly I don't remember the episode well enough to know if anyone outright criticized Clay for his slowness, but two of the three challenges present a test of agility only for Clay to turn them into a test of intelligence and patience. It's here to set up Clay as having a valuable skillset, at least from where I'm sitting. Also, just as a side note, One of the coolest parts about Xiaolin Showdown for me was always how the heroes and villains were always trading powers: My best example has to be when the only item the heroes have left is the Mantis Flip Coin, which just happened to be the very first item used by Jack in a showdown. Just the fact that any power being used by the villains in one episode could be in the heroes' hands in the next and vice-versa. Fun times.

In the mime episode and the one with the hummingbird Raimundo directly criticized Clay's slow, methodical pace. The only person I can't think of that ever criticized anyone was Omi, since he was just so pure. Hell, even when he went evil it simply turned him into a fighting feeak.

I remembered the backstory that EVERY Shen Gong Wu was used by the original Dragon Monk to defeat Wuya, and wondered how in the heck he could use the Heart of Jong and Sapphire Dragon with their huge downsides...then we got the Emperor Scorpion and I realized that it's the necessary CONTROL for Shen Gong Wu otherwise too self-driven to be net benefits on their own. Also because the Shen Gong Wu were designed to be used as a set, that justifies in-universe a wide variety of non-overlapping designs and functions. There are not going to be multiple tunics for example because functionally you can only wear one at a time.

Omi's golden skin just seemed like a reference to the Buddha to me. Even though he stands out like crazy, it's not unheard of for main characters to become artistically distinct from the rest. The Simpsons is an example. A couple seasons in, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are pretty much the only characters whose hair are a part of their skull, so they don't even look like they fit in to their own show. Omi was probably conceived VERY early in pre-production, and they were too attached to how he looked to change him after they decided on a style.

Kimiko was the rich daddy's girl stereotype. Since this was around the rise of fast fashion. She's drawn and animated kinda using the "Wear it a day, then throw it away" fashion model. Wuya actually holds a special place in my heart as an example of a villain who made a serious effort to avoid holding the idiot ball. For the first two seasons, at least. She did pull one "sudden but inevitable betrayal" with Mala Mala Jong, but... well, I can forgive her for that as her patience was almost assuredly shot from close proximity to Jack Spicer for an extended length of time. Also, what happened in the next few episodes are a contributing factor, and I don't even know why I'm being evasive as if spoilers matter, but I guess I'll continue to dodge spoiling, regardless.

I love how the show at least attempts to keep track of which side has what wu. Instead of giving the villains wu off screen. Good old fashioned losing the battle, but winning the war.

I like how the episodes where you were saying they had no lessons (Germaine and the Sun-Chi Lantern) had no moral payoff when it did on the arc overall: Omi's story. Starting out as one who believed he was the only dragon warrior and did not trust in others, those two episodes are where he develops the most. It might not be overt, but working with a stranger, even going as far as to offer him a spot with him, and finally trusting and seeing the powers his fellow dragon warriors had that did not were massive for his development
@Colby2D
@Colby2D Ай бұрын
Yeah that’s a really nice way of looking at it. I kinda interpreted the sun chi lantern episode as more of a “Omi’s trust is unconditional when push comes to shove” and sometimes I feel like there’s other episodes where they have a conflict that kinda gets indirectly solved but they’re all written so nicely I think it’s totally valid to consider the episodes as part of character arcs

From a cocky guy who made jokes, to his turn to evil, to redeeming himself, and ending the series by becoming the leader. Him becoming leader was also a departure because you would’ve expected the kid in the logo would have been the leader. Makes me wonder if Chase was wrong about Omi being “the chosen one” which wasn’t really expanded upon. There was no prophecy or anything and even his “dots” have no explanation. Then the first season ended and I don't remember EVER seeing it on TV again, I actually assumed it got cancelled and didn't find out for several years that it carried on. As soon as I found out that their were 2 more seasons I binged the entire show in just under 2 weeks. If we are talking showdowns exclusively and not counting group wins, Clay is dead last with only 2 wins for the entire series, both in Season 1. Poor guy. But with him counting non-showdown victories like tackling Jack for the Two-Ton-Tunic, then maybe he'll have a better final count.

One of my favorite Saturday cartoons as a kid because of the huge variety of magical items the characters had, it was one of the earliest shows I watched as a kid to attempt a continuous narrative, and the showdowns made every climax unique. Here’s the thing about Clay’s father that you seemed to miss, he’s not a secret master or badass. He’s a counter to Clay, lacking the skill, strength and wit and only being a big guy. He thinks he knows what’s best but is actually very deeply out of his depths when confronted by real wuxia magic. He can’t destroy a robot or teach the cast a secret technique because then that means that narratively he has a point when he says Clay shouldn’t think or plan and only needs to be big and strong

That’s a fair point. I think sometimes these story structures go on to show that both sides have things they’re good at, justifying their perspectives, but they can see eye to eye and respect their different paths, which I think can be somewhat of a common structure especially in stories of like “character leaving the family business, farm, town, etc”

Clay still won that ceramic elephant challenge in my eyes. The plot just made him unplug his controller by not pulling it back. The person just smashed it because he didn't think someone would use a rope. Which invalidates his entire test and he was probably really frustrated that one of his students basically outsmarted him. Clay was even swinging the rope in front of him and the dude still couldn't stop clay from grabbing the target.

This thing has so much depth and I watched it out of order and with plenty of reruns, valuing whenever I would see some new episode I didn't encounter before. The big and strong but kind/soft character in cartoons tends to be always dumb, or cowardly, or naive... Raimundo losing a lot despite being probably the strongest is on purpose. One of the cool things in this show is how being strong and a good fighter helps, but isn't everything, and his real development comes later, after his "villain arc", when he comes back and becomes the leader (another cool thing they did, since normally that position would go to Omi, who is more or less the main protagonist if there is one).

I want to give props for Jack knowing how to use the Changing Chopsticks and how the serious portrait this Wu more as a joke, but same how Spicer was seen as a joke villain he saw the potential of the Wu. Sure he didn't use it in a Showdown, but the same how Clide thought outside of the box, the same Jack thought outside of his box ( pun intended) to create a really complex robot that can mimic anything, sure that bot was a real treat when it was introduced in the episode and for the rest of the series is either a goon or non-existant.
