It seems like Jinshi is the Emperor's son and doesn't know it. Remember, the baby switching idea was just Maomao's crackpot theory. So no one would really just assume it's true out of speculation.

Just to make things clear: - Jinshi was 17 at the start of the series, it's been 2 years. That's why he's now 19. (Notice the change of seasons) - A year passed at the point when Maomao was let go the first time, and another year has passed whilst working for Jinshi. (the first winter she was there was when she drank the poison soup, the next winter is around now, especially when they splashed water at Lihaku for almost burning himself because of the explosive experiment she made a few episodes ago) - Jinshi is assumed by Maomao as Ahduo's son - He was switched from the beginning knowing he'll be treated better as the Past-Emperor's son more than the Crown Prince's (current Emperor) son with Ahduo who's a mere daughter of the crown prince's wet nurse - However, the switched son with Ahduo was killed by accident by her own head lady-in-waiting that was executed earlier in the series - Jinshi seems to have had a discussion with the Emperor that's never mentioned much which is why he's in the rear palace as a Eunuch managing the Consorts instead of acting as the sickly brother to the emperor. - He's not aware he's the son of the Emperor; it seems only Ahduo - who had a drink with him before she left the rear palace - knows that he is her son.

OK to make it easier for you, Jinshi understanding is the he is the emperor's younger brother as of now. If the emperor will die he will be the one next in line and he did not want that, that is why he is trying his best for the emperor to get a new son so he will not be the one next in line. Guys, it's very simple: Jinshi might be the baby (Current Emperor x Ah-Duo = Jinshi) and just NOT KNOW IT. We were assuming Jinshi KNOWS his own story, but if he was raised as the Emperor's brother, he'd never know he is in fact his son.

My theory is that Jinshi doesn’t KNOW he was switched at birth. He still thinks he’s actually the Emperor’s brother, when in reality he’s Ah-Duo’s son. That’s why he says he wishes that baby survived, without KNOWING that HE is actually that baby. If true, I’m wondering if even the dowager or the Emperor himself even knows that he has a surviving son. Maybe it’s a secret so secretive, that only a handful of people know about it.

the only two possibilities are Ah-Duo or the empress dowager. Those are the two who gave birth at the same time and have the speculation around the baby swap. So Jinshi is either the current emperor and Ah-Duo's son or the old emperor and empress dowager's son, making him the current emperors brother.

Without giving spoilers, I'll just say that it's really important to remember the past Pure Consort's story. She is the one who looks similar to Jinshi, and the current emperor does love the past Pure consort - hence why she was sent to a safer palace instead of back to her family with money. The Pure Consort gave birth at the same time that the past emperor's empress gave birth. Due to complications, one of the babies died. Mao Mao's adoptive father was the doctor who tended to the empress but couldn't help the Pure Consort because the empress was also having complications. That's why the Pure consort lost her uterus and couldn't have any more babies. What we know, however, is that something serious happened soon afer the births/death of 1 baby and Mao Mao's adoptive father - a key asset to the Emperor - had his knee caps busted and his manhood taken.

Aight i think i got it; Aoh Duao and the current emperor had a kid while the previous emperor was still alive, thats Jinshi, but he was swapped with the dead child the previous emperor had and plays the part of the current emperors brother even though hes actually his son. This was done to both protect Jinshi from malevolent parties and keep nobel factions from trying to force the current emperor on the throne (as he wouldve had an heir) before the previous emperor passed. The only part of this that Jinshi knows is that Aoh Duao and the current emperor are hiding something from him about his own lineage.

BOTH the current Emperor AND Jinshi himself, they both think Jinshi is the current Emperor's brother. Yeah Jinshi is Ah Duo's child but Jinshi doesnt know it he suspects it but doesnt have confirmation of it the only ones suspected of knowing about the swap is Ah Duo and other people but very few. What Jinshi speculates in the internal monologue is if 1. Wish the baby had survived then, there would be a prince. or 2. If he is the prince, which is a delusional and fearful idea for him cause he doesn't want to be a prince. That entire monologue of masks and his talk with the king( a previous episode) are to show that he doesn't feel suited to all the prince stuff if the latter were true. He avoids thinking like Maomao avoids Jinshi's position or Lakan. " Wish he make himself a prince soon" will once and for all remove any delusional thinking or additional work for him in his position. My personal thoughts: I wondered why he liked Maomao beyond just mistreatment. It was his desire to ignore any high power positions, and be invisible enough to do just the work and not deal with people. Maomao's nature makes him crave that more.

But I'm sure we all have to understand by now that Jinshi is Ah-Duo and the current emperor's son. The show basically spelled it out for us. Jinshi himself just doesn't know and probably believes he is the emperor's brother. I just really want to know if the emperor knows or if Ad-Duo hid it from him too. This is so weird to me, and Idk why I'm feeling bad forJinshi not getting to bond with his actual parents.

My understanding is that Jinshi is like talking in third person, I think he doesn't know he's the son of the current emperor, he just think he is his younger brother. I'm suspecting that the current emperor and Ah-Duo planned the swap coz there's a scene that the current emperor is present on Ah-Duo's labor.

Jinshi is emperor's son with Ah-Duo. Old emperor had a son at the same time. Jinshi and old emperor's son were swapped. Old emperor's son died of botulism because Ah-Duo's attendants fed him honey. Jinshi grew up thinking he's the emperor's brother, when he's really his son.

I'm not a manga reader but there's a chance what Maomao say Gyokuyou getting pregnant are true...remember the episode where Maomoa, Jinshi & Gyokuyou talk about Aphrodisiac....I think Gyokuyou took some of it for herself and the emperor...her expression that day are interesting...Never thought It got this fast for her to be pregnant.

But honestly I'mc a bit confused too, looks like perhaps what we thought about Jinshi isn't the real story. even though I thought all the LN/Manga readers spoiled that for me already. From Jinshi's internal monologue, he didn't imply that the swapped baby was him all along. As a result, this turns all our assumptions on its head. Of course its his own internal monologue which may not be reliable either. I just hope the anime doesn't deviate too much from the LN/manga, otherwise we're all going to get confused by the LN readers who insist on spoiling and putting views forward. For now I think we better re-open the case of the swapped babies and KIV that for awhile. The only thing we know for certain is that Jinshi isn't a eunuch due to the medicine he is taking to suppress his libido and making him look and sound more effeminate, and that he is highly ranked in the Imperial family. Please no spoilers from anyone, but I think the motive of the villain may be to remove all potential claimants of the throne. From 1st episode we already know that all the male heirs of the current emperor seem to be cursed and died early, only Xiaoling daughter of Gyokuyou is alive due to being a girl. (Very cute that scene where Gyokuyou and the emperor were sitting together and Xiaoling was on the emperor's lap. Makes him more human). Even Xiaoling was sick forawhile before Maomao gave teh warning. Unfortunately this points to the newest concubine Loulan, who hasn't been bedded yet and hasn't been harmed yet, unlike Gyokyou, Lihua and Ah Duo. And if Jinshi was the swapped baby and therefore a claimant to the throne if he revealed and could prove himself as the direct son of the current emperor, that would be the clear motive to kill him in last episode. On the other hand, Loulan doesn't seem to be making much effort to seduce the emperor, even confusing him with her different clothes to the point even we get confused. So maybe she herself isn't the plot mover, but perhaps her family? Wouldn't be the first time an influential family tried to put themself into the imperial family. Damn, just when I thought we get things easier. And we still don't know how Suirei comes into all this. She's too smart to just be a simple "fixer" of all these "accidents". And now Gyokuyu might be in danger if she ends up giving birth to a son.
