The FT-70D Fusion radio is an entry level C4FM or Fusion digital radio with Wires-X access as well as basic FM functions. It's a great choice for the ham looking to get into digital radio while keeping to a budget.

Of all the videos I've seen on the FT-70DR, this is absolutely the best one I've seen because it is the clearest and most understandable without needing to pause, rewind or slow down the play speed. I've been watching every video I could find on this radio. I like that you are making separate videos for other topics with this radio, instead of trying to cover everything in one huge video because I can't sit through long videos. I'll be watching almost all of the videos you make on this radio because I just recently bought one and find it a bit mind-boggling compared to what I was used to decades ago (I have had an amateur radio license since 1961 but haven't been active in any aspect of ham radio for almost 40 years). The FT-70DR is like something out of Star Trek compared to the radio equipment I used the when I had an active radio station in the 1960s.

Same here. It's been 40+ years since I have been on the air. I needed a pastime so I dusted off my Novice license and started studying for Technician. It's like Rip VanWinkle waking from a long sleep. It all feels familiar, but so much has changed during these decades. My FT-70DR arrives tomorrow. Glad Gadget Talk is around to help. I'm funneling it into my head to be ready when I get the Tech license.

I too have returned to the fold after many years absence. This digital stuff is a wee bit mind boggling. I love using my old Kenwood TS-140S, whilst at the same time learning how to use the ft-991 and have just purchased an Icom 7300. Gonna keep me out of mischief for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for a well made video in plain English. I'm taking my first tentative steps into digital voice modes so I purchased the Yaesu FT70d and it looks a great little radio. I'll see how it goes. Cheers.

My first digital radio was the Icom IC-2200H VHF with a UT-118 digital unit for D-Star, back in 2006. If I remember correctly, the UT-118 digital board cost as much as the radio and had a stunning FIVE digital memories! These new radios (from all the manufacturers) are SO much nicer to use!

Thank you GT for this video. I am currently studying for my Technical License and Already have the FT-70DR/DE YAESU Hand held. Nice little radio and I have heard good things about it. My Ignorance at this juncture is quite evident but with your help and help from others who are Far, Far more experienced, I am sure my endeavor will be worth while. I will be watching more of your videos to get a handle on some of this. It's all about "knowledge" of How to. At any rate, thanks again.

Very good radio, I have sketchy coverage so switching to Diamond SRH77CA antenna was definite improvement, although longer and less convenient. Also, I have found when you want to change or add something to a channel memory it will switch to next available channel than the one you’re working on so you have to switch back manually before saving. That is a total PITA but once you get used to this behavior it’s easy to remedy. Great video thanks!

The human factors team must have been high on something when they designed the 70DR. Orange on black print is probably the most difficult combination for the human eye to read. In addition, I have to use my thumbnails to press the keypad buttons. Who was it designed for, Munchkins? I too had to but the RT Systems programming software package because I could not get the data cable to hold a comm port on my computer. Who in the world doesn’t include a charging stand which cost Yaesu probably a buck, and they sell it as an accessory for $30. Finally, it has an anemic 1800maH battery, about the same size as a Baofeng UV-5R but they charge 3x the amount for an extra. I’ve been a DMR user for about 2 years and found only one active room on Fusion, which is America-Link, which I can access through TG 31656. To set up a Wires-X node cost about $1000, whereas you can establish your own TG on Brandmeister for nothing. Most digital users are accessing hotspots instead of repeaters. YSF is way too expensive for users around the worlds and that’s why DMR is now dominating digital radio. The good thing about the 70DR is the superheterodyne receiver as opposed to direct conversion and the air band which I use as a commercial UAV pilot. Those features were the only reason I didn’t return it. Yaesu makes great HF radios, but are off their game in the digital world.

Thank you for video. Sorry that you mistakly mention that Motorola was the developer of DMR. It was developed by the Europeans just like P25, it's an open source, but Motorola just copies their protocol and calls it Mototrbo.

Great video! You have an outstanding teaching ability, making it easy to learn without getting lost in the process. Thank you! I am still debating between the FT-60 (analog) and the FT-70 for my first “real” dual band HT. I am hearing that battery life is better on the FT-60, which may be a concern for some. Question: Can you charge a spare battery by itself in the charging cradle?

Hi there, thanks for an excellent video on the Yaesu FT70D. I'm going to upgrade shortly from the ubiquitous UV-5R. As a new ham (as of 1st March) I bought it as a teaching tool and for practice. Two radios are on my shopping list. The Anytone 878 and the Yaesu FT70DR. Here in the UK both radios are about the same price, but are in a slightly different position. The Yaesu being an "entry level" model in their range vs the 878 being almost a premium radio for Chinese DMR. I'm drawn to the quality of the Yaesu and my local repeater supports both DMR and C4FM. As I'll likely be using analogue FM most of the time what is your opinion on the sound quality of both systems in this mode? The Yaesu is likely to be a keeper but first I need to research which Rooms vs Talkgroups are better subscribed. Thanks. 73s Garry M7PGB
@GadgetTalk4U
@GadgetTalk4U 3 жыл бұрын
Both the Anytone and FT 70D sound good over their respective systems. Both seem to have good build quality. You're right about one being entry level and the other premium. There is a lot of chatter on Facebook groups and in talkgroups and rooms about signals that are bridged in from other systems. Most of the comments aren't good. If you have the capability to listen in on rooms or talkgroups or you find your friends tend to prefer one or the other, I'd go with that digital mode. Call me crazy but I seem to sense a difference in the traffic on DMR and C4FM. If you do, too, pick the one you prefer. Thanks for watching and commenting.

A p.s. to my previous comment: I won't be watching the video on CHIRP for the FT-70DR because I bought a copy of RT Systems programming software for the FT-70DR. I hope you will take a look at that software and make a video on using it with the FT-70. Specifically, I'd like to see a video on the best source(s) of repeater information. RT Systems will load repeater listings into the FT-70DR but I haven't tried it yet and I have already learned that the listings are not necessarily very accurate/updated.
@GadgetTalk4U
@GadgetTalk4U 4 жыл бұрын
RT Systems software is good if you have the funds. This video was about using free or nearly free alternatives. I use an RT Systems program on another radio I have. Watch the Chirp video anyway. There is a section on using external sources to input repeaters. I believe the RT Systems software is similar enough that you'll find it helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@GadgetTalk4U I probably will watch it, during one of my daily indoor rowing sessions when I have to row boringly slow and need something to watch to break the boredom. You do give good presentations. Changing subject to the FT-70DR - the first time I used it on a local Fusion repeater, the guy who answered me turned out to be using an FT-70 and then a few minutes later another guy called me and he was also using an FT-70. All three of us had bought them very recently so that small sampling indicates it is very popular and your videos relating to it should be likewise popular. On yet another subject: If you ever feel like having a video on using / covering the "Nifty! Mini-Manual" for the FT-70, that would be very interesting. Though it tries to clarify things, I'm still not clarified on some of what it covers. A video would be a lot clearer.

@GadgetTalk4U
@GadgetTalk4U Жыл бұрын
Motorola radios used commercially use a variety of frequency bands. Your company has grouped them into channels for easy identification. To use another radio not supplied by your company you'd need to know the frequency assigned to channel 10 and what they mean by subchannel. My guess is a CTCSS or DCS tone but it could mean something else. You really need to chat with your company's radio guy or gal. Good luck.
