Thank you Alice for your very creative and well-explained ideas. Although I don't tend to make much music in the same genres as you, I still benefit greatly from watching your tutorials and seeing your unique (compared to nearly all other YT music producers) yet very sensible ways to think about making music. Very inspiring, cheers.

This has been my approach and I learned it from DJing. It’s a balance of energy. You never want to exceed the volume or the EQ band of what you currently have playing but as you transition from one song to the next it’s going to make the segue more impactful.

Awesome mental model of how to think about fitting sounds! I think the same concept applies to the rhythmic complexity when you have multiple elements. If you have a rolling bass line it's hard to fit a melody with many short notes or a vocal with a lot of lyrics. A melody line with longer note duration would be a better fit I think.

Alice, would you mind doing some videos in FL studio? I know most people use Ableton… but those of us who are now chained to FL would really appreciate some FL specific tips as well. Your videos are by far the easiest to understand and I think doing this would help grow your audience too :) Adam

None of this information is DAW specific. Parametric EQs are parametric EQs. There was a 3rd part plug-in that was used to duck the synth pads down during the vocals. If you don't have a side-chaining EQ or multi-band compressor, you can just automate the gain to a normal parametric EQ when each vocal sample comes in. It'll work the same, it's just a little more laborious.
@CaptainSpalding69

@@fakshen1973 I was referring to Alice’s videos in general. You are correct though - this one is theory and not DAW specific.

Another extremely useful video - thank you Alice! I've been thinking a lot recently about plotting music on 2D charts like this, so I immediately understood what you were doing. In my case I was trying to analyse an entire album (JMJ's Magnetic Fields) against two axes - complexity and positivity - so I was attempting to think about how to construct a whole album and give the mood of the tracks an arc from beginning to end. But these concepts obviously translate to all kinds of analysis, and I really liked the way you illustrated this with making sound choices and mixing. Really useful in EDM genres, and applicable to many others as well, I think. By the way, I have the exact same chair as you :)

I'm not grasping the difference between richness and color. At first "richness" sounded like it was just brightness. But then Alice goes on to basically describe "color" as brightness. In both the richness and color sound comparisons, it sounds like a low pass filter opening. What am I missing? 1:12
@NevadaSYSTEMmusic
@NevadaSYSTEMmusic Жыл бұрын
Many ways, I think because too long to go into for the video.. saturation, layering, filter frequency and type etc. could make it all sound richer
@Alice-Efe
@Alice-Efe Жыл бұрын
It is a bit overlapping area but richness in this video means amount of harmonics (both over and under) you have in the sound. So a bass sound with a lot of saturation with low pass EQ would be richer than a single sine wav.
