What is amazing is I have the majority of all the same tech on my P515 right down to the virtual residence modelling absolutely love this piano and for the price still can’t believe it has more features than the 645 dead within reason

Thank you Patrick for your very comprehensive review. I am a pianist who is very familiar with the 635 and just played the 745 and 645. To begin, yes, the 600 series are great instruments and very versatile. I perform on a 635 weekly for a few hours at a time Baroque, classical, romantic, Debussy, many Joplin compositions, Gershwin, and some jazz, etc, etc. I’m listing all of this repertoire to demonstrate how versatile the 635 really is even with plastic keys. Now, moving up to the 645 vs 745. Clearly, the action has been improved but if you are a serious pianist who has the 600 series it is very helpful to try out the 700 series before buying. A tip when playing all models is to keep the touch setting exactly the same on all models you are trying. I kept the touch on a medium setting. The real deal breaker is the control of the keys when trilling high up on the key towards the fall board between the black and white keys is better on the 745. And , yes, the sound is more resonant at all volumes. I own an acoustic baby grand and really enjoy all the features of a good digital piano. I was thrilled to buy the 745 and will be even more thrilled when it finally arrives. I always look forward to all of your reviews as well as the ones with you and Ted. You are a great team. 🎹

Hi... I'd like your opinion on the 775 if you've tried it, whether there's a notable sound difference compared to 745

The main advantage of the wooden keys is weight distribution. The keys on the CLP-725 and CLP-735 are heavier as a result of being plastic (yes this may seem counterintuitive but I measured them with key weights).

That sounds interesting, because I tried the CLP-725 a lot and the action was very light. Very pleasantly light I might say. A huge amount lighter than the NWX action, which is heavy, lighter than all Roland actions, lighter than the Kawai ES920... I need to try the 745 to see if it's really even lighter than the 725, because that would put the action on the opposite side of the spectrum from the 645.

I was hesitating to buy the P515 as it has the CLP-6xx generation samples and this video has helped me - I don't feel the new samples are much better, if at all.

@AlamoMusicCenter: some piano players are still visuals - captions with bullet points for differences & names of the sounds/instruments (like "CFX"/"Bright Grand"/"Upright Piano") you're currently playing would help a lot (if not to say, are "the must"). @Yamaha: I don't know will I survive till the time "Upright Piano" in CLPs will sound IN TUNE... This would be one of the most used if it will ever be not OUT of tune as in 600s and 700s... Otherwise - thank you so much for the best keyboard feeling on the market!

The wood keys are only the white keys. The black keys aren't wood. And the wood is still encased in plastic. This is true of all the Clavinovas. All wood black and white keys, you have to go up to the AvantGrand series. As for the demonstration of the 7 vs. the 6, I think showing the piano voice of the instrument (CFX, Bosendorfer, Bright Grand, etc.) would be helpful. Overall the 7 seem to have more body and depth yet seem a bit more mellow, at least on some voices. Also, maybe the dynamics were expanded as well as tonal changes between loud and soft. It seems a worthwhile upgrade and hopefully the action change is approved by most potential buyers.

They drastically changed the sound, strange considering its the same piano. The 600 series samples are more cohesive, flowing together. You can hear a droning resonance around 14:00 on the 745. I hope Yamaha can fix with a firmware update.

It's going to sound exactly the same through the headphones. The big difference is through the speakers (which aren't presented usually in online reviews, we hear line out recordings) and the feel of the action, wood (white keys) vs. plastic.

Could you tell me whether the sound on your video is recorded through a microphone or if you're using a line in or other direct to the camera sourcing? My CLP-745's on board speakers don't seem to have the depth of sound I hear in most demo videos. I'm wondering if I need a pair of powered speakers to improve that?

I found that I get that “demo” sound when I take it out of recital mode into concert mode. I usually only play it in concert mode to get that sound you’re talking about. But it can depend on the area you are at.

hello Eric, most use the line out to "demo" including this video. You can experiment with placement(corner loading helps), certainly hard floors help. However, you have a line out - I suggest you plug in a small cheap subwoofer or monitors to enhance your sound. Experiment with placement. For not much, certain you can outdo the next model up - 775.

The 600 series main piano samples sound much better. Notes sound more harmonic together, a lot like the c3 I heard. Now Im thinking twice about keeping my 745 order.

You are not telling the truth here. Both actions do NOT have wooden keys. It is just the usual plastic action with wood inlays on the white keys for optical reasons. The black keys are completely made of plastic. So you also don't feel any "wood vibrating" here, it is the plastic "vibrating". Real wooden keys are in the Kawai CA series. Stick to the facts.
