In this video I'm showing you how to replace the Steering Head Bearings of a Yamaha MT-07 & Tracer 700 model from Ball Bearings to Tapered Roller Bearings. I hope you enjoy the video!
Tapered Roller Bearings are generally stronger and last longer than Ball Bearings. In this case, they have also another advantage. Because of the bigger Races, they are easier to remove from the Steering Head. ;)
Tip if you need to weld a washer to a race: Tack them evenly around so you can punch them out at least on two sides to prevent the Race from tilting inside the Steering Head and jamming up. In this case I was lucky. The Race broke (can be seen in the video) and it lost its outward pressure and could be punched out from one side only. Otherwise a damaged Steering Head could be the result. So take care!

How many years have you been working as a Yamaha service technician? I don't think a normal technician would do such a careful and knowledgeable job. In our country (Turkey), many authorized services are more interested in small cc motorcycles and do not know much about the detailed workmanship in larger cc motorcycles. I congratulate you.

For a few years. Awesome bikes to work on because not much breaks. haha 👍👍😂😂 Well smaller CC bikes are the same as bigger CC bikes because the mechanical stuff is identical. I don't live in Turkey so I can't really say anything about it but working on these bigger CC bikes is always a pleasure than scooter BS. 😬😬🤜🤜

@@meoffjack The number of scooters in Turkey is too high compared to the number of large motorcycles. With the scooter, their technical brains are narrowed because they do simple oil changes, filter disassembly and plug-in work more, and then when the big motorcycle comes, they cannot do a correct maintenance or repair enough. 😅😅

Hey, thanks for the video and listing part numbers in the comments section. Thinking my '18 xsr700 should be identical? Does this style of bearing require the tightening, loosening, and final torque as the OEM bearings?
@meoffjack
@meoffjack 7 ай бұрын
Hi, as shown in the video it requires you to do one "pre tightening" and then loosen it again to it's final setting. For the tapered roller bearings you cannot use the Yamaha torque values. Tapered roller bearings are tightened until you can't feel any play in the steering head anymore and then a tiny bit more. Otherwise you tighten them too much! They require way less torque than the normal ball bearings. And yes, standard MT-07 and XSR700 are identical.

I Roberto. All my Yamahas had a misaligned handle bar. My Tracer 700, Tracer 900GT and my Tenere 700 all have a slightly misaligned handle bar from the factory. I have replaced the Steering head Bearings because I wanted to switch from Ball Bearings to Tapered Roller Bearings. A slightly off center handle bar is no problem, so don't worry. If you want to get your handle bar 100% straight, do what I've shown in this video. Loosen the top triple clamp bolts and give the wheel a light blow. That should fix it. 😁😁👍👍

You made a mistake when upgrading to tapered rollers.You must put first the seal,then the washer then the bearing.The way you put the bearing in this video will wear it out prematurely because the bearing cage rubs against the seal constantly.(Even though the original setup is like this,it is for a different type of bearing).Very common mistake for a lot of Ducati folks when upgrading the bearing as well
@meoffjack
@meoffjack 7 ай бұрын
Which washer? There was no washer. Everything was assembled correctly. Nothing touches the dust seal. If anything touches the bearing or is not installed correctly you will notice that immediately. Even if the bearing cage rubs against the dust seal, not the bearing nor the cage will wear out, but the rubber as it is softer than steel... 😂😂😂 You see me rotating the cage 26:07 on the dust seal and it moves freely without touching it. I don't know which stupid YT videos you have watched, but if you order the right parts, there's no need to put a washer under the bearing. I know at least one American fool fucking around with his tapered roller bearing and a washer but only because he either used parts out of different kits or the kit he ordered was a cheap one. Since this video I've already put 8000km on this bike and I didn't even adjust the steering head bearing after a long test ride and it still functions perfectly. I will make another video when the bike has 70k km on it. 😆🤣😂😂

@@meoffjackmy mistake,i thought i saw a washer at 24:20 but that is just the finish. Anyway,on bikes where there is a washer you have to do what i said,which is almost all Ducati's and some Japanese bikes. You can watch bradthebikeboy video on tapered roller bearings. The seals which come with All Balls kits for a lot of bikes are trash,so are the bearings,all Chinese made. Which is what most people buy unfortunately
