At 4:26 Chris starts playing the melody to "America" from West Side Story, which is a fun easter egg. Sorry people got over excited over the version. Between radio/single cuts, re-masters and SO many live versions of their songs it's impossible to navigate the Yes catalog perfectly. Thanks for taking it on!

Cowboy Steve - I once decided Howe took this and turned it into an homage to American music. The song takes you through so many styles - psychedelic, classical, jazz, funk, Chet Atkins, southern rock - the kitchen sink of 60s and early 70s guitar sounds. And yeah, Bruford is really good on this. Howe once said, We wanted to be tighter than Booker T and the MGs. Thanks from serious old Yes fans!

I think we all knew you'd really like the _sound_ of this extended version. Notice the 'placing' of the instruments in the soundscape, which was pretty much perfect in this recording. I can't tell you how many times reactors have done a side-by-side comparison between Paul Simon's original rendition & this extended "jam." Most of the time they're so stunned by how little it reflected the original, which was essentially a ballad, which they liked, so they weren't able to appreciate what YES had wrought. That's why I always recommend that people, if they want to compare, should listen to YES' version first, & then check out the original upon which theirs' was loosely based, just to be amazed how profoundly different this really great recording differed from the original...

This is a great track. The first time I heard it on the radio (this full version), I knew instantly, from note one, that it was Yes. I was already into them for about a year when I heard this, back around '80 or '81 and could tell it was them immediately, from all their signature styles, specially the bass playing of Chris Squire. Another great reaction, my friend. Sorry you had to deal with those idiots. I always believe in being respectful.

It's not necessarily one of YES' best-known songs, but it's one of my favourites. It's so full of joie de vivre and playfulness that it's perfect for cheering me up when I'm in a bad mood or sad. By the way: the original by Simon and Garfunkel is completely different, but also beautiful in its own way.

Re: Chris' style, first of all he had big hands. Apparently that's why he became a bass player as a teenager instead of playing guitar like all the other kids. Secondly, there's videos out there where he explains this but he held the pick in a slightly weird way that allowed him to have that speed and control, but a bit of his thumb was also hitting the strings. Lastly, he took full advantage of the Rickenbacker's stereo output, blending two different amps, which I don't think many other bassists were doing back then (plus he made use of the effects available at the time, including fuzz boxes and the wah pedal.) BTW, I love your idea for a t-shirt. I'm not a big t-shirt guy but if it were done well I'd be tempted to buy one! I'd bet you'd get Steve Howe himself to buy one, given how much he openly acknowledges people like Chet Atkins as an influence. AFAIK Steve deliberately built that solo around American-style guitar phrases because they were starting to tour the states at the time and he knew it would help the band go down better with American audiences. Unfortunately, "America" didn't stay in the set lists for very long as Yes moved onto albums like 'Fragile' and CTTE. It sat in mothballs for years until finally being revived in the mid 90's during Yes' classic lineup reunion period. They even played it live on a Fox morning show in downtown Manhattan! The Simon and Garfunkel version is very different and definitely worth a listen. S&G purists usually hate what Yes did with the song. Whaddevah.

I believe this was recorded when Wakeman had just joined. “America” had been covered by Yes regularly on the prior tour, and Wakeman was going through and learning the repertoire. Atlantic first released the long version on a label compilation album, and also released the shorter edit as a single. They then included the long version on the “Yesterdays” Yes compilation album. Ignore the haters.

Yes were playing it on tour while Tony Kaye was still in the band, soon after Howe joined. There is a live recording on KZfaq of it at Kaye’s final gig, plus they rest of the concert. While it has many shared elements with the studio version, there are also some marked departures. Well worth a listen.

A repost since this now really is the last of Bill in Yes, at least for a long while, anyway. This seems a better video for it. Chris: Bill leaving was very odd. Funnily enough, Yes seem to thrive on setbacks. The more that gets thrown in our face the harder we work and try to come up with something better... There was no bad personal relationship. I can only think he wanted to take a look at music from a different angle. He could have advanced himself with us just as much as with Bob Fripp... I said, 'Seriously Bill, what are you talking about? We are doing very well here and we are going to be making a lot of money'... I think it was just because he was a jazzer at heart and wanted to go more in that musical direction. Bill: I had, by 1972, been with Yes for about four years, and as a young player, it seemed like a very long time... To do another album with them would simply be repetition... It was like drawing teeth to get "Close to the Edge" made. Yet it turned out really well! It was an excellent album. How it got to be so was simply a miracle... It was very exciting and I wanted to leave on a high note... I didn't see it as the start, but rather the end of something. Chris Squire thought it was the start of something. For me, once we'd arrived, the interest was gone... It was just a feeling that I had to move on. How could I develop on the instrument unless I changed? I firmly believe it is a musician's obligation to do so... I think you are obliged to have an output. I've now developed as a composer and a band leader. But it's important to get across that I was thrilled with Yes. It was my favourite band. When I left it was one of the best bands in the world. I'm certainly not blaming anyone for what happened. Sure, Chris was late, yes Jon was like Hitler on some occasions but that's not the point. Generally the band was bigger than the sum of the component parts and it really was a terrific organisation. I was very sad to leave it, although I sensed I absolutely had to at that point. I wished it no ill and wanted it to go on and do great things.

You’re right they should just chill. Thx for a great 👍 reaction! Bruford ,Squire and Howe sound amazing on this. The band used to play this live before Rick Wakeman joined the band, with Tony Kaye. It’s a little different but just as cool 😎 I loved that Yes would do covers like this as they did on the first two albums with Peter Banks and Tony Kaye. “I See You” originally by the Byrds is a great example of Yes making it their own! I also love Something’s Coming from West Side Story…how cool is that?!

While I don't have much positive to say about Bruford's snobbish attitude & his decision making, I think that what he came up with in contrast to Chris' inspirations were quite wonderful, even though it was quite quirky & filled with ghost notes. I think his contributions got emphasis in the mix _because_ Chris' contributions were _always_ given great emphasis. I mean as a rhythm section, they were extremely "proggy" in that they were both always pushing the limits. Alan's talents were super impressive, but there was just something about the Squire-Bruford combo that was special, which is amazing because apparently Bruford suffered greatly throughout the partnership, given his habitual instinct to indirectly praise himself by criticizing others...

Yeah, that Cowboy Steve really loved that Western thang. Bill Bruford humorously mentions that fact in a Documentary. Steve was a fan of Chet Adkins style but also Wes Montgomery's jazz (noticably on the end of Siberian Khatru). But considering the subject, the Hillbilly sound is so so appropriate. Also BILL and Chris are amazing here!

'Yesterdays' may have been the first Yes album I bought with my own money as a teen. I had inherited some of the older albums from my brother, but it was where I first heard anything from the first two albums, plus "America" of course. Man, I was hooked hard. Apparently that comp was released to coincide with the 'Yessongs' movie theatrical release in 1975.

This song was originally released on the record company album promoting their new bands. It came out before yes released an album. It was probably priest Steve Howe. Enjoy!

They had released at least the first two albums and likely The Yes Album when this came out. It was roughly concurrent with Fragile. Wakeman had already come aboard, although the word is it was Bill Bruford playing the mellotron on the song. I believe Rick played organ.

OK I wanted you to hear the long version too, but to say nasty stuff is totally unreasonable and stupid. But I just love this song. Please listen to the S & G original to hear the stark contrast. Is Bill Bruford OK here? LOL. I'll just leave it at this, Alan and Bill are both great, Alan is skewed toward Rock and Bill a bit more to Jazz. I really admire drummers who can change instantly to another complex rhythm, also skilled at that is Neil Peart.

Do what you do; a little sad that people get worked up enough to dis you for listening to version a or version b, c or d. I’m just glad you’re at least exploring their work. I’m a huge fan but Yes isn’t for everybody, nor are The Rolling Stones.

I have to admit that the jam parts are excellent, it's just that the concept doesn't agree with me. They didn't need a starting point as good and iconic as the original song for that. That works better with obscure themes, deep cuts etc Like Deep Purple with Child in Time. Who cares about the original in that case?

No. Not having it. I've been a Yes fan since 16, but a Simon and Garfunkel fan for far longer, and this version sucks. I hate it, everything about it. "America" is a sensitive song, and Yes just bulldozes through it. They have understood nothing of it. Sure, musically they can do a lot with the material, but they completely disregard that this is a proper song with lyrics. It's a song about isolation, not fitting in, feeling lost in the supposedly greatest country on the planet; the key phrase of the poem is "Kathy, I'm lost, I said, though I knew she was sleeping", and at 11:25 Yes butchers it. They change and bastardize the entire meaning and point of the song. It's like misreading a text in a play. And it doesn't even sound that good. Recording quality is...whatever. The guitar solo is overlong. And anyone who knows the works of Vanilla Fudge isn't all that impressed with the overall results. I hate this so much. Bad cover, really bad.
