FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, Jack becomes on overnight sensation with a little help from his agent.

I had a girl like that as a friend. Very similar vibe and cuteness. Pretty, and as a friend, dedicated. It was impossible to feel anything though because she had a huge reverse magnetic vibe against any guy except the ones she happened to be interested in, and she doubled-down on those. We would hang out, play instruments, etc. but pretty as she was it was like just a person in a girl suit. The girl part was irrelevant because of her behaviors, habits and overall disposition.

Usually it is girls that pull the "brother and sister" line. But in today's world we have to make men act more like women, so you get the guy doing it in this movie. Totally unrealistic. I did like this movie a lot even though I am criticizing it.

He probably met Elle when she was skinny, knock-kneed 13-year-old girl and saw her like a little sister. So he already had that mindset in place when she started blooming, and it was hard to shake. And he figured that she looked at him as a brother, so he missed all the signals she was giving over the years. He probably just brushed it off at fun banter, but she was dead serious. Plus, it seems he was completely focused on his fledgling music career rather than sparking a romance with anyone.

Such a great scene, and such great writing throughout. No one can hit every note, but the perfect pitch percentage is very high in this movie.

I saw the movie by myself. At our local small art movie house. They sell beer and I had one. I sat in the front row of the theater off to the side, alone. I love the music of the Beatles. But I've never been a hero or music idol worshipper. Sure when John was murdered I was stunned and saddened and even attended an event in Central Park NYC. But that was decades ago, right? There I was, watching the film, just one beer in me, and sure there were for me some emotional things in the film involving the music I love (like the song itself, Yesterday), my own head and sure crushing a bit on Ms Lily James who seemed to transfer her vulnerability to me. And then Jack goes to find John. And this guy walks out with his own soft vulnerability looking to me an awful lot like John, but older and weathered and it hit me with a suddenness I was not prepared for. With a sense of longing for what I didn't know, for John to be really not dead? For my long ago life, my past, my old friends, those I'd lost and those I never see enough? I cried out with a voice unfamiliar to me. "John." Just that. Transfixed for moments believing in the fantasy I was watching, made briefly real for me.

We are not pretending this isn't a regular misalignment that couples face? Often, very often, couples develop extremely deep friendships that become romantic feelings at separate times for the individuals involved. The fear of sacrificing a great relationship with someone for a very uncertain 'maybe' romance is very real. He has loved her for years, but hasn't allowed himself to label her label her that way in his own mind. I think she has felt the same, but now has an acceptable alternative to him (though not her first choice) and is telling him to chose or she will. Human relationships don't get much more real than depicted here, except for how really great she looks and how talented he is...

It's kind of sad that this movie reduces an amazingly charming and lovely woman into a passive love interest who has "been waiting half [her] lifetime" for some guy to fall in love her. It's just funny when she says, "I'll always just be Ellie with the frizzy hair" given that she's a movie star and certainly looks like it.

I think you missed the entire point of the movie. It's about pursuing happiness through love. Jack is nothing special, and it's about him realizing fame and 'success' isn't as great as our society makes it out to be. So he finally realizes the important thing in his life, his love for Ellie. Which is why he reveals the whole truth, settles down for a normal and happy life.

She also notes several times with grief during the course of the film that she doesn't know him anymore. The main point is that she can't understand his success. And that totally makes sense, because it's not HIS or THEIR success.

I think it mainly stems from flow of the narrative not being natural. In the beginning of the movie, although there are many suggestions of a romantic relationship between the two, there was never enough emotional tension and conflict within the characters to suggest such an exaggerated response as depicted in this scene. And for this to be arguably the climax of the movie (the other being with John Lennon, which I believe is pre-climactic to set up this scene) that changes the entire path for our hero, is just does transition well and thus, not believable. Perfectly believable. Sadly. A lot of men consider themselves pretty ordinary so could never conceive that someone as lovely or beautiful as Ellie could be in love with them. They would actually put themselves in the friend zone, not for a minute suspecting that they shouldn't be there. It's a lot more common than you imagine.

Meanwhile me, telling my best friends, taken or not, that I like them. No, they didn’t like me like that back, but at least I could move on and have a nice friendship with them where i’m not wondering if it could be more. To be fair, she is written to be quite of a manic pixie dream girl so the story arch matches that.

First, she drunkenly confesses she loves him at the going-away party, then, she visits him at Liverpool, just to back away at the last second and then whines about not being noticed before, despite clearly not ever showing romantic interest for the guy herself. This is her fault and she didn't deserve the ending.

Really agree, I remember watching this in theaters and being like, am I supposed to root for her? She's acting like a toxic person, especially calling him just to tell him she has a new boyfriend, just putting in his face to make him feel bad. Only to then feel bad afterwards that he's not coming after her.

Since you asked, because shrouded love is like liquid, slowly getting colder. The longer you wait the deeper it freezes and thus the harder it is to crack open. This is especially true when a friend is involved, where you risk not only rejection, but permanently altering, and possibly ending, the friendship. Had she made her move a year or two in it would have been much easier. Each year that passed just compounded the eventual anguish to come. LJ does a very good job of acting out a purging emotional collapse in this scene, btw. And to your credit, I agree, should have moved on her feelings a lot earlier than she did, before the feelings, and the friendship, were too deeply rooted.

Elly loves Jack evem more in the alternate timeline because "Wonderwall" in her eyes wasn't a cover, but became an original song from Jack. Oasis not existing in the alternate timeline. That's why Jack is a bit taken back by all this.

Ellie is being a pretty traditional woman by being passive and expecting Jack to take the initiative in the relationship. She is just as responsible for their not getting together earlier by keeping her feelings hidden. She waited 10 years for him to love her? WTF did she not do something about it?
