Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the ability to continue working despite your fear. The fact that this movie ignores this is the biggest reason why it fails. It sets all of the heroes up to be emotionless robots.

To be fair, the film doesn't encourage bravery, for the very reason you stated. There can be no courage/bravery without fear. When the film tells you to leave it at the door, they enforce the lack of emotion.

I think the reason M. Night chose Moby Dick as the symbolic book for this movie because he assumed that his target audience has never read the book but knew that it was a famous novel. He could have easily chosen any other classic novel and try to make a connection with it. Or Jaden recommended it because he thought it be dank

I also realized something else, Master Po. Maybe the reason that all of the animals on Earth evolved over *1,000 years* specifically to kill Humans better is due to some genetic tampering from the evil "Aliens". It still sounds like bullshit, but hey, it's a science fictionous explanation. If it's good enough for comic books... But no, that would be smart, and the real reason is most likely just Shyamalan trying to drop an anvil on everyone's heads about how we're killing the environment and animals evolved to avenge Gaia or oppose the "evil Humans" or some shit like that.

Hey here is an idea that would have made a actually decent twist for the movie. Will smiths character actually died during the crash and jaden's character is hallucinating his father in order to survive...his father trained him to know what to do and jaden is accessing this knowledge by visualizing his father and hear his training. I don't know this movie is shit so its really hard to find a way to fix it.

Maybe take away the ursa, smelling fear part. Make humans leave earth for some other reason. You could scrap off the fearless father thing and make Will Smith more human & relatable. Give him a better name instead of his anime special attack like name. Less monologues. Cast someone else in place of jaden and make him just a good cadet instead of Will Smith's son(behind enemy lines like relationship between both), hire a director who can do a large scale sci-fi movie(shyamalan thrives better in lower budgets)... maybe jj abrams. And give will Smith lesser control over the creative, planning process. Maybe push out Will Smith himself and bring in idris Elba, Laurence fishburne, Cuba gooding jr or chiwetel ejiofor in place of him, and someone like Michael B Jordan, John boyega, Donald Glover or Alfred Enoch instead of jaden. Save that money for better writers.

I feel like the "evolved to kill humans" thing would be a lot cooler if they were genetically engineered monsters used in a sort of Biological war that later forced humans to leave due to the rampant horrifying mutants.
@bmalinas

@monstergenome7566

***** That's the thing though, in the original there A) wasn't enough time for them to evolve at all, let alone into more deadly forms and B) no reason for them to evolve to kill a species that wasn't present on the planet. In my version the creatures didn't evolve on their own, they were genetically engineered to kill humans and other living weapons as part of the bio war. The fact that they are still able to kill humans when humans return is not due to evolution but to the genetic damage done to them before the humans left.
@Rocketai
@Rocketai 8 жыл бұрын
+Monster Genome While that would be cool, rampant mutants would disrupt the biosphere of the planet and destroy the food chain, so everything would end up getting killed and probably turn vast areas into badlands. Unless these mutants would somehow enter a dormant state, as long as there are no humans around, thus leaving the rest of the animals alone.
@monstergenome7566
@monstergenome7566 8 жыл бұрын
Kludgy Lynx Or there would be pre-programmed flaws and fears in the mutants so that their creators could keep them under control until they were released into enemy territory. Some could be allergic to oak, others might have a deep-seeded fear of ants. Or maybe those could just be random negative mutations that happened during the monstrous mutation process... or maybe humans are gone for so long that the biosphere has time to adjust and life "finds a way" but the drive to kill humans is still imbedded in them because there was no reason that those traits would go away. OR maybe its like a Primal Zerg situation where the planet turns into a monstrous free for all and only the strongest survive and prey upon only a small portion of the weaker creatures of the Earth while defending their territory from other monsters. What I'm saying is there's a lot of places this premise could go, but M. Night's was the worst.

There's actually a reason why Seifer doesn't show any emotion. You see, in order to fight the Errrrrsah, Seifer Rage had to wish all of emotions away. Unfortunately, Cosmo lost the box that contained all of his emotions. There was suppose to be a scene where Cosmo brings back his emotions right when he was fighting an Errrsuh and the Errrrsuh kills him, having his son Jaden Smith to fight his fears and defeat the Errrrsah. But Shyamalan thought it was too realistic. I know this real because my dad's uncle's cousin's best friend's college roommate's brother's ex boyfriend worked as a caterer on the set.

But...won’t you need spacesuits for that? And why is there just one dude passing them around like candies? Oxygen masks are built into airplanes for emergencies...so their spaceships have to rely on a dude slowly passing them out...? As opposed to...just build them in panels or drop down from above???

It really sucks because the core idea behind this film- humanity having to abandon earth and then, after thousands of years accidentally stumbling upon it and realising you are now a stranger to your ancestral home planet- is actually really poignant and powerful, but it was just executed so, SO poorly in this film that it's gone completely to waste. Actually, that's not true either. Fear is a base emotional state almost entirely ruled by the amygdala. Rational thought does not require fear, and in fact is often overridden by instinctive fear responses. Hence, this is why people who panic often will die in situations where someone who remains cool and collected will find a way to survive.

this is actually a more nuanced concept than you guys are giving it credit for. When we developed our sense of fear, our selective pressures for evolution were very different than they were after the rise of human civilization. Despite being helpful for assessing danger and having an instantaneous response for it, fear is very instinctive and not often based on logical or even accurate assessments, (as it's difficult to survive if you're opting for time consuming information gathering before taking action when you're competing with animals that don't mind being wrong half the time). The suppression of fear can definitely allow for more well processed ideas to act on if you have the capacity to account for dangers while you make your assessments.

It would but it seems they've created a baseless and fictional "space cloud storm" because of "graviton waves", so without further implications it is meant for the viewer who has more brainpower than an Intel 4004 to believe that this "space storm" could cause the ship to be ripped to pieces and entering an atmosphere at high speeds would be less dangerous. All in all, I would say no until this "space storm" has details on how the physics work and how much energy it carries with it. (P.S. The existence of a "space storm cloud" is astronomically stupid as it relies on the concept of a 'storm cloud' like on Earth which gain energy through water molecules transferring up and down the cloud, as far as we know, this '"space storm" relies on the same concept but without gravity and matter.)

@JoeTAC

I wrote this on another of the videos but here's my theory - That the "obsession" in question is killing Ursas, or saving humanity from them. Will Smith has become so obsessed with it he has let it tear his family apart, he has become cold and emotionless and disconnected from his wife and kids. He has become unable to feel even when his own daughter died. All he has in him now is anger and cannot connect. That is what his obssession has cost him. It also relates to the "peg leg" of the crippled man standing up to him, which becomes him at the end. I think the lesson here is that Cypher Raige could no longer disconnect from the mission, and his self imposed role in it, until it consumed his humanity entirely.

or deodorant, body spray...a bath...cologne...NOT bathing, and having other smells mask it, taking out the part that detects the pheromone and waaaaaaay more...yeah, this movie sucks and this channel is great. p.s.: many conditions can hinder the fear response or even a glandular problem, but the one most associated with it (because there is no exact 'i can't fear' condition) is known as congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, or CIPA - a rare genetic disorder that makes individuals unable to feel pain. A person with this, (more likely than not), will not fear, at least not for their own well being... or Ataraxia a condition characterized by freedom from worry or most, if not any, other preoccupation.

DRA485 People who don't feel pain might not effectively fear receiving pain, but, for example, they would still instinctively move away from ledges or the like. What I was thinking of was people with genetic or physical damage to the part of the brain that cause the fear reaction (the amigdula, I think). And yes, this channel is pretty awesome.
@SimGunther

Lugh314 I thought it was about Will Smith's growing up in a very religious background, especially when he was baptized. That's why both him and the son got the ability to ghost after being dumped into the "pretty water", AKA, the ability to ward off demons at any given notice. See, this film is smarter than it wants to be! -__-

@@DRA485 I know you heard of that disorder and like to show off by awkwardly and nonsensically inserting it in a comment but no, insensitivity to pain is completely unrelated to not having fear. Damage to brain areas processing fear will cause someone not to have a fear response. Brain damage from trauma or malignancy, for example.

That doesn't mean they evolved to "kill humans". It means they evolved to survive and will defend themselves. For example: If Earth is so dangerous, why didn't he wear gloves and/or some kind of space helmet? He was wearing a suit exactly like his father's, the guy who was legendary for killing ursas in faraway lands - do all the other planets in existence have conditions that are perfect for humans? @kurvos
@kurvos 10 жыл бұрын
To be fair, not feeling fear would mean a lot more than this movie understands. If you had no fear, you wouldn't care about loving others or about dying. Why would it matter if you betrayed the closest person to you, or your son? You have nothing to fear - that includes not fearing having no friends or family, being alone, and not having anything. Technically, having no fear means you'd literally do anything - because if you don't fear, you don't care. So... it kinda got it half-right? But on the other hand, he shouldn't care if they would survive or not, nor support or help his son. In short - if we have no fear, we have no love. Why would we even defend ourselves if we have no fear? As said, we would then not fear being dead either.

I think it would have been a lot better if they went with Earth having *too much* oxygen. Plants growing all over the planet for 1000 years without carbon monoxide from cars or 7 billion humans breathing it in would probably lead to very high oxygen levels. There is such a thing as oxygen poisoning due to too much oxygen. The little "breathing disks" would limit how much oxygen Katai was taking in. It still wouldn't make much sense, but it's way better than Earth having no oxygen at all!

If this had been a movie about Will Smith and Jayden getting lost on a camping trip and having to survive it could have been something. The whole point of the movie is that its a father son bonding/acceptance story. But no that's not good enough for Will Smith, this needs to be some sci-fi epic with giant birds and sterile FUUTTTURRRREEE spaceships. Will and Jayden aren't even acting together on the same set for a majority of the movie. Will Smith was paid to sit still for a hour and not be in the same room as his son. I mean the man couldn't even make a simple western comedy movie without a giant spider robot being in it. Will we remember you punched that alien once and that was cool but its time to move on.

Just as Adam's pet peeve is humans making animal sounds when disguised as animals, mine is seeing asteroids portrayed in pretty much every sci-fi movie (bar 2001: A Space Odyssey). In reality, asteroids in a cluster or a belt have such massive space between them that, statistically speaking, a spaceship should fly through them without ever encountering even a single asteroid. I know asteroid storms are interesting and exciting set pieces (I can't honestly blame writers for including them in their work), but they tend to destroy my willing suspension of disbelief whenever I see them in a movie. It's just completely unrealistic.

@FinleyZero
@FinleyZero 8 жыл бұрын
+tmzissupergay Some other observable belts (like the Kuper) belt also show the same traits. But you don't even have to rely on observation, it all comes down to basic physics: the asteroids themselves have to travel at a considerably large distance from each other, otherwise they would be sucked into each others' gravitational field and collide. The clusters you see in movies might exist at small scales and for short intervals but are absolutely unstable on the long run. Maybe if a movie took the extra step of explaining that XY spaceship is approaching a recent collision of spatial bodies, I'd be inclined to believe that there's dense debris everywhere. :P (I still don't take the usual "hey, look out for that asteroid belt!" bs as an answer though. :P)

Fun fact: I think in the German dub script he says that everything on Earth has "mutated" and not "evolved" this makes actually more sense doesn't it? I mean mutation does not imply the "natural type of mutation" that is "Evolution" but an artificial one caused by e.g. radiation caused by human wastes and rape of nature. Of course it's still very unlikely but more plausible then saying "everything has EVOLVED". So is it just me or did the German dub team read through the script and actually realized that it was complete bullshit and just changed it to a only slightly more logical version?
