I've been using Nanaberries on Legendarys and catching them for a long time since I got back into the game in 2021 of August. I've known about the critical catch when I got back into the game after a couple of times noticing it. 😊

It works when you miss and your buddy headbutts it too. Could theoretically circle lock the smallest circle, throw the ball and miss when the pokemon attacks, and keep doing it until your buddy headbutts it back. Its not 100% that your buddy will get the excellent but it does happen quite often

I think you need to hit the pokemon very close to the circle in order for the buddy hit to count as an excellent.

I now call the buddy catch assist perk the catch hindrance perk. It used to be great in 2021, very helpful perk, buddies would always hit it back into the circle. 2023, I'm positive Niantic nerfed catch assist along with catch rates and it's gone under the radar of the community. What would have been an Excellent/Great curve-ball is now way more often than not, knocked back with catch hindrance to hit the Pokemon with 100% chance with a 'nothing' throw. So the XP from an Excellent throw is lost, more chance of fleeing, it's just a hindrance now.

My dad got a Galarian Zapdos and I told him everything he needed to do... He got a great throw and it was a critical. We were freaking out because I told him it had to be a excellent throw

Since watching the video yesterday, I have managed to pull critical catches on a Seedot, Delibird, Combee, Granbull and at least one other. Totally works. I did get a Galarian Moltres on my Daily Incense this morning - but try as I did (you only get one shot!), I didn't have enough experience with the distance and circle of the Moltres to hit that smallest circle... totally missed.

ive managed a few times, 1 on zekrom and 1 on shadow zapdos. but its definitely a pain the a-- to manage. but until a video shows, its not true lol

I wish I knew this earlier, I encountered a galarian moltres while driving and it fled. Thank you for this tip I will use it a lot! 😁😁 I just tested it on a darumaka and it worked!

Dang... I am on this. I've long since had my method for Excellent throws down, so I feel pretty good about hitting that circle sometimes... and will definitely be trying on any Galrian bird spawns.

I did 2 excellent curve throws to try and catch Amaura today, hoping it would do the Critical catch and it run away from me don’t know why. 🤷‍♂️🤔

I already have them all - 5 total… I have 2 galar zapdos and 2 articunos caught using ultras. I caught galar moltres using masterball because it doesn’t spawn as much as other two for me.

Well let's look at it like this, it doesn't work on raids/legendary raids. So i feel it isn't a bug or something like that. I think it is a reward for those with actual skill.

Other than Galarian birds this isn’t much use as everything else is easy to catch even legendaries in raids if you have even an ounce of talent in throwing balls.

Can someone please explain how to set the circle?? I just found out recently that its possible.

To "set" the circle you hold the ball so the circle starts to shrink to the size you want and let go of the ball. Step 2 now that you "set" the circle you wait for the pokemon to do the attack animation and throw during that is when you throw and time it so your throw hits as the animation is ending. The reason you throw in the attacking animation is when it's in animation the circle is locked so you have time to get a curve in.

The critical catch is not a bug but an open-hidden catch feature in the game that is a part of the game itself. It's been in the game for many years after Niantic revamped the game back then when introducing raids, and GBL.
