I went to magic con Chicago. I didn't know the pro tour was happening until I LITERALLY saw the stage. That shouldn't be the case.

The standard events with no marketing are one thing. Another thing is how insanely expensive standard decks have become and how much of a gulf there is between the expensive cards and the cheap ones. I'd go do standard if I could play a deck with a 40%+ chance of winning for $60, but there is no "cheap shielodred", there is no cheap preacher, no cheap Atraxa. I'm not asking for exactly those cards, but an uncommon 3/4 deathtouch for 2BB that did 1 damage on opponent draw would be fine for me to build towards a top deck. Even mono-red agro is $100!

That being said, I think COVID really did a number on paper play for Magic as a whole. The routine grind of limited, Standard, Modern, etc. at your LGS as a weekly or biweekly consistent thing completely stopped and isn't easy to just kickstart again. I don't envy having to revive a playerbase that got jerked into this online-only space and then try and slowly drag them back into stores and organized play

I really miss large tournaments and coverage. I remember being excited to read the SCG newsletter after each tournament. I remember vividly how I basically stopped playing paper magic when SCGs and GPs went away. Now I am back but basically only play commander.

I love the fireside chat jim. Always love to hear your opinion and experience. I do think arena is a key part to killing paper standard. Even in the olden days, I and others were too scared to "invest" into standard. Arena makes it almost free and on demand. I too would like to see more competitive paper magic. For me I can't find standard events near me. But I can find commander a dime a dozen.

In answer to your survey question investigating the effectiveness of WOTC's current promotion of tournament MTG...I usually hear about major events the week that they are happening, although sometimes not until the day before or even the first day of. I watch what I can. For reference, I played in tourneys for many years and avidly followed the Pro Tour coverage of old (going right back to "The Duelist" magazine, "Inquest" mag, Frank Kusumoto's Magic Dojo website, etc.). Nowadays, only one friend is still in the game and he lives far away from me. We get together a few days each year and play as much sealed as we can cram into the time available. I'd love to follow the PT and rest of the tournament circuit again as it once was!

Lurker:knew my store was having the championship but it was a draft and I know later in the month they’re having the rcq. So I skipped cause I heard the prize was fancy basic lands, which is what the got as prize support for it two weeks when they were notified they had to have the event. It was awkward cause were Chicago land so it happened right as everybody was going to the con. I actually saw you Jim didn’t say hi cause it looked like you were cubing. Gotta say love your content you’ve been helping me with my local and arena grind try to see if can qualify for a pro tour or win a major event as my next goal. Keep up the good work.

Only slightly on topic but I still dont understand why they did away with the DCI system, the points were the reason I started playing competitive at all, and a great translation for a casual player’s experience. From 2012-2014 I played FNM, Modern Monday and weekend Win A Boxes every week. The one day a TO told me”hey you’ve got a lot of points, if you play in a few PPTQs you’ll have enough points for a bye at the GP.” I’ve been hooked ever since.

No i didnt know the standard store championship was happening. Ive not known about pro tours from wizards themselves in years. Honestly i wouldnt know about pro tours if it werent for you jim. Youre one of the only magic creators i still have subbed. Wizarda has sucked at communication in what seems to be in forever

I only found out because I was looking for that Baldur's Gate event, another cool event which I only heard about from PleasantKenobi. I really wish I knew earlier since I was considering making a deck for the next PTQ but I don't have enough time to get one together in time now. WotC's advertising for competitive magic has been absolutely atrocious

Wizards still needs to get over coddling the secondary market. MaRo said something to the effect of "we can't effectively print Modern starter decks because we can't print too much value in a given product." My company in Christ you control the supply. Print Sheoldred and Atraxa out the wazoo so that people can play lol.

I work at a Wizard's Premium Store and we didn't know the Store Championship was that Friday until the Monday before. It was a real shame to have only 10 people so only 2 of the players didn't get the top 8 promos. They thought it was just FNM.

I always know when the Pro Tour is because Jim says "I'm off to the Pro Tour, wish me luck!" But seriously I only ever know about it from some streamers and podcasts. As for Standard I'd never even considered playing it because I started playing regularly around Khans when Standard was the most expensive it's ever been ($1k decks!), so I stuck to limited. I've been having fun playing some standard decks on arena for the first time... Ever! But I only play to grind gold for draft.

There are kids at my lgs, but like everyone else, they are also playing commander. Commander as a format works well to draw in new players to the game. Yeah there is a lot of rules text but with 4 players there is someone usually knows, but it doesn't really matter much if you get the cards wrong. The commander precons are good price and work as worthy challenger decks

Knew Standard Championships were happening. Went to a store at the start time for an event that they had listed on the Companion app. The store told me that only one other person showed up. AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT START. Wizards deserves a ton of blame, but some of it is also on LGS being unwilling to even attempt/straight up lying on the app about running an event.

When you talk about "the culture of Magic changing" I'm inclined to agree, but for me it's not the game's tournament structure. Frankly I don't know about the competitive events, I couldn't tell you what it was like before versus now, but for me it feels like the player culture has gotten so poisonous that it's seriously affected how I want to play Magic. Every time I've been in a game store to play for the last two years it's just been a cacophony of a bunch of different angry nerds lecturing me and each other about how they hate this and they hate that and they're mad about this and it's so exhausting that I just don't want to be in a crowd of people yelling and being mad anymore. I want to play Commander with a small group of people and not have some guy I've never met snarking at me about how much he hates the art I picked or whatever. I can totally acknowledge that maybe it's a change of sensitivity on my part since covid, I'm a lot less comfortable around crowds in general than I used to. Maybe people were always like that and I never noticed. But one way or another I'm playing in stores a lot less and in bars and basements a lot more than I used to and it feels like it's because the attitude of "the average player" has become something different that makes me uncomfortable. I play more Magic now than I probably ever have in my life, I'm not playing the game any less, but I am curating who I play with in a way that doesn't feel compatible with going to an FNM.

Nah, you're not wrong, there's way more negativity spread about mtg, even if the least you get just what should or shouldn't be banned. And I believe huge part of it is because youtube algorithm promotes content that dumps on what ever product you're interested in more than the good stuff.

I was at Chicago and knew the pro tour was happening but unfortunately there was no live coverage besides the Reid Duke talk on day 3. There also wasn't even room to play on demand or pick up games. It was overall under staffed and under sized. I watched other pts on stream before and I was surprised there wasn't more live coverage.

I knew that there was one coming up and wasn't certain as to when. The owner of my home LGS sends out communication emails to players that have signed up for them. He informed us a week and a Wednesday away from it. They leave the advertising to the LGSs for tournaments.

Your point at 29:00 is so on. I grew up on FNMs in the late 90's; it was special and we all looked forward to it every week. If WOTC shifted from prioritizing profit over the health of the game, they could treat it more like chess, get newer players in at a cheaper price point for them (like an affordable standard or pauper FNM), and eventually actually make more money. But last few years it seems like they're in money-chase overdrive at the expense of the game, which is still amazing no matter what the finances/politics/etc.

I feel like organized play is missing a bridge event for a certain tier of player engagement. I lived in an area that didn't really do Grand Prix and always wanted to go. Like I was never going to a PR, but my aspiration was to attend a GP. Now that's gone, and it's hard to care about anything within my reach. I also found that, as a spectator, Grand Prix we're such a natural way to market and build excitement for the PT. Now it feels like PTs just kind of happen out of nowhere.

No idea, but I barely go to local shops. Constructed I only play online. A buddy has a nice huge basement and will run drafts with prizes where he keeps no profit. He always has 24 show up and will regularly get 32. People go here because there are better prizes. FNM prizes back in the day got you high value foils for playing. Now there isnt really that. Do i miss early States tournaments kinda but i lived in one of the most competitive states with regularly getting record players in Ohio. The other thing is back in the day i remember the most expensive rare in Standard was $20 even with inflation it doesn't match prices today. This was up until Tarmagoyf.

I knew the championships were happening because I check regularly for EDH events. I might have entered if I had known months in advance. That's the problem, I saw the event because it was beside the commander event I wanted to enter.

Spot on with the issues of current day MtG. There needs to be a happy medium between casual play and competitive play. It feels super easy to do but I think Hasbro slowly dying has WotC in a bind where they're just forcing them to keep making as much money as possible to keep Hasbro afloat 🤷

I have been playing magic on and off since 5th edition, what is a store championship? I have been playing FNM a few times in the last couple months. I saw on ads on instagram in the last couple weeks that there was a standard tournament coming up in which you could get some cool promo cards but idk when the tournament is. But I didnt pay attention to the ads since I dont have a paper standard deck (i play arena)

Each Standard set release has a season. Standard showdown events happen weekly and they culminate with the Store Championship that is played during the final week of that season.

Store Championship is afaik the thing that used to be Game Day. An event WPN LGSs are supposed to run, once per standard set, in standard, with special promos. At my LGS, they stopped running it because nobody was up for standard

Maybe this is just an issue with other game stores, but both face to face Toronto and 401 games downtown advertise their store championships quite a bit and I’ve known about them for a while not to mention I’ve seen the ads for them on Reddit
