From Brittney Dawns fitness scams to photoshop, eating disorders and 'online cults', explore the toxic side of social media and influencer culture.
Have you noticed how social media has become dominated by so called influencers?
Now there are many benefits to following these extremely popular figures, you get free advice, product recommendations and also get to feel part of a community all striving towards a similar goal.
And in return for the value provided, they are rewarded lavishly, without the need for a single qualification.
You have people giving advice which is not at all backed by science. Medical Science isn’t the only way to cure something.
With great power comes great responsibility and a lot of these people are just not ready or prepared for such a thing.
And the consequences are devastating...
Part 1: Unregulated Advice
From the fitness programs to supplement recommendations, most of which is shared and promoted in mainstream fitness is mostly unregulated.
This complete lack of regulation is why so many people are following misguided advice which is often extremely dangerous.
And with the way in which social media works, this is only becoming more and more problematic as we have our cognitive heuristics exploited.
Part 2: Instagram VS Reality
Most of that which you are shown on social media is only exists in a hyper-reality.
Trying to compare yourself with this illusion you are being shown can be extremely detrimental to your mental and physical health.
Part 3: Fitness Cults
The ideal image which the fitness industry projects is clear.
And it can be truly enjoyable to aspire to reach these body standards. Unfortunately, these standards are only getting more and more extreme which creates a breeding ground for eating disorders, cult like diet groups, fitness groups and online communities.
While being a member in some of these groups can be beneficial/ enjoyable, thanks to the previous mentioned problems, when being a member of these groups becomes part of your identity, you are susceptible to the traps which lie and wait.
Final Message
Maintain balance when it comes to health and fitness.
Only follow science-based advice.
Only compare yourself with yourself.
"Have more than you show, say less than you know."

My classmate from elementary is 160cm in height and about 140-150kg in weight. She started getting fat at age 14, not because of disorders or illness (her mom is skinny, her dad used to play football (not US football) and her brother is fit too). She was getting fat due to overeating junk food. She is now 28, and she recently posted few pictures of her at a beach wearing a bikini with a caption: I am happy the way I look, body positivity ftw. I told her that she can be happy as much as she wants to, but that she will die by age 35 because of heart failure. She got offended lmao. I then told her she can be mad at me idgaf, if you wanna die young because of overweight, suit yourself...
@aethris1238

@@vanjamenadzer Yeah bro, that ain't helping. Informing her regarding the benefits of getting fit would be much better. Regardless if it's her fault or not, you don't want to kick someone when they are down/in a bad place. If a person had just been through a toxic relationship and has been warned prior by many of their friends to not initiate that relationship in the first place, then it's for the friends to cheer him back up and get him back to his feet, not say 'LMFAO get fuck' and let him suffer in chronic depression. You're not considered 'tough' if you say stuff that is not necessary and may offend. You're just being an asshole.

Because social media is designed to show off what you have. And only the positive things. So you are spammed with tweets like "hey look i just bought a car, I just dropped 30 kg of weight, I bought a puppy, I got hired to this insanely well paid job". And people don't realize that, that person might only have tweeted a positive thing in their life once, but because you scroll through your feed you get spammed these messages from multiple people across the globe. So to you it seems like everyone has their life together and always get what they want, when that's just far from the truth. And the other half of the time you get all the hateful and negative comments making you dislike humanity. It's just bad for mental health overall.

Loved this. One group that I think is extra vulnerable that no one talks about is mothers. There is a lot of terrible advice and toxic imagery out there for how to recover from pregnancy and get back to a normal weight (or on the flip side, lies about how you're stuck being overweight).
@GGGmod1
@GGGmod1 3 жыл бұрын
imo its a really stupid thing. Hormones from pregnancy could severely develop your breasts effectively adding pounds of breast tissue only, something you cannot remove without surgery. How in the world is this diffcult to understand that having a certain weight isnt indicative of a certain status. You can be stuck being over the weight you were before the pregnancy but that doesnt mean you are fatter. It could literally be just extra development of a lot of things that add some weight. And being at the body fat percentage you were at beforehand will not put you at the same weight.

Yeah, I primarily kept only Instagram and Facebook for business/professional purposes. Rarely if ever use them to just scroll through content, but I've also added extensions that make my newsfeed blank or I just muted the posts and stories from literally everyone I follow except content I find actually useful or motivating to me. I can message a friend every once in a while if we want to stay in touch but there is just no way I can be here grinding during the pandemic seeing the millionth pic of someone's coffee and croissant at some cafe lmao

everytime i diet down its always the same rules, "eat less, work out more" simple as. only thing id add is figure out what your maintenance caloric intake is (that is how many calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight) and take away 200-400 calories off of that maintenance intake. personally if i take off anymore i start to feel really shitty because im not eating enough or inversly i end up binging because im starving myself. Each person is different and loses weight or gains it differently, the idea is to experiment without falling into one of the categories talked about in this video because then you will be at risk of really hurting yourself. do your research, fallow genuine health/fitness channels who use scientific studies to back what they are saying (and not just cherry picking one obscure study when every other study says different) and listen to your body as i mentioned before when i explained why i dont go lower than 400 caloric defecit. Great video and really good way of putting things into perspective.

I had left social media like 5-6 years before , don't even remember that time period . I took Detoxification of my mind seriously and most importantly accepted my responsibility and reality . Being depressed is OK , it's just a feeling you need to get out by working on youself. Recently I joined IG again , for checking how much I have actually changed . I'm satisfied that I can see the exact opposite of reality and social media . Our lives are much better than ever before , it's just a simple thing " take responsibility of your mind ,soul and body , your thought process " .

Hopefully I could eat breakfast again at 8 am. These diets are messing people up and brainwashing them into “fitness gurus” which aren’t healthy at all.

Really great video, Josh! I was aware of the negative effects that social media can have so I stopped using all social media many years ago, except for KZfaq. Social media is not inherently bad but, speaking for myself, I'm able to navigate KZfaq while maintaining a level head. It was much easier to fall into dangerous comparison behavior on other platforms. However, since I haven't been on other social media, I wasn't really aware of the variety of negative experiences that social media has been causing. I love that you are telling others to be wary and have balance. Great video.

I’m on my 3rd day of deleting Instagram I feel better about myself but, every time I look in the mirror you remember how ugly you feel and all because some girl photoshopped her body and her face to an unreasonable standard. It’s horrible, sometimes I cry about it. The fact that girls bullied me at school also didn’t help. To be called fat and ugly at 5,8 and 130lbs is horrific, I was also spat on at one point. It got really sick and lost a lot of weight. If you feel like Instagram is part of the problem delete it.
