Legitpenguins69 Most people who make the argument haven’t made any music themselves. It’s basically an example of hiding behind an undefeatable bullshit argument, that is if you aren’t actually making music. Otherwise, the argument just falls apart, like in Melon’s case. Most people who make music don’t actually care about opinions because they understand that there’s always someone for your art. If you like something, it’s likely someone else does too, more than you even. If you hate something, vice versa.

"You Have to Make Music to Review Music" is a misguided response to a legit problem - reviewers are increasingly less able to engage music on its own terms and tend to review it with reference to gossip, lifestyle, trend aesthetics. Describing artful sound in useful words is actually really hard and is arguably a dying art. I think Melon does it pretty well and I'm willing to wager that his background as a player helps him unpack and describe what he's listening to as well as he does.

i want to agree, but i find it really difficult to, especially when it comes to instrumental music. people who dont understand what its like to PLAY an instrument - any instrument - just dont seem to appreciate instrumental music the way musicians do. something about knowing what it's like to play, and imagining the person making the music as you listen to it, just adds so much to the experience
@augustoalvarez67665 жыл бұрын
Being serious, maybe being a musician could help you understand the whole process and effort behind someone's work, but in the end, what matters is the final product. As a jazz musician, I generally talk about specific music theory if I’m debating the effectiveness of that technique with someone else. Otherwise, it’s pretty easy to tell things such as confidence and execution by simply listening to a lot of music and allowing your ears to expand. I hear a lot of details in my favorite songs that I never noticed 3 years ago.

Making music helps you to understand music more, as well as music theory, so you can learn how to critique music in general. The key factor there is “understanding music”, learning how to actually play music does lean you closer to that factor so you know what you’re talking about. Even if you can’t play music, what matters is you know how to READ music (instrument tabs, chord structures, time signatures) besides deciphering the lyrics and their meaning, how tone and pitch is played in a song, and importantly what the artist is speaking about through his or her songs. As long as you understand all those factors, then you know how to study good music and how to critique music in general and which are good or bad.

I'm not a musician, I don't really play any instruments sans some piano lessons when I was a kid and some theory from that, but my boyfriend is a musician and I definitely value his opinion very much but I feel like the only thing that I refer to him for which I can really can't asses on more than surface level is the technical ability on display- right, like he understands the chord progression and the difficulty of moving through that finger positioning or employing that technique or staying on the beat in that time signature- but hey if I really wanted to I could learn about that through doing some ear training watching guitar lessons on youtube and live performances without ever picking up a guitar myself and honestly learning through music criticism. I feel like it just really depends on how much a critic has grown their knowledge of a subject, how much of its history they've dug into, how much theory and criticism they've read. There's nothing you can't learn and music is meant to be accessible by nature...why are you publically releasing music if you don't want it to make an impression on listeners and you don't want them to think about it or talk about it. You don't get to dictate how your art is interpreted anyways and if no one "understands it how you meant for it to be read" you did a shit job at communicating. The people who the music was meant for, ie everyone, have the right to form an opinion about it....musicians are capable of having bad takes on music anyways, sometimes they're too close to it and overvalue certain aspects such as really technical playing and composition.
