It's because people are stupid and judge others so they can have something to talk about with others. They would never do anything themselves. They are just stupid, petty people. This is why policing is so dangerous. Line they say, cops won't get involved without backup. The real world has real consequences. You can't press reset and try again.

So... A few years back I heard a guy and a girl fighting in my apartment 2 doors down there was banging I decide to call the police to report a case of domestic violence, during me explaining to the operator where I am what's going on, suddenly that fighting got louder and had clearly made it's way into the hall. In which I hear the woman shreik help. I then grabbed the pistol from my desk, put my phone in my pocket and went into the hall and and shouted "stop hands up" and aimed at the guy while he has his hands around her neck. To which they thankfully both complied and I guess her rightly assuming I wasn't talking to her she ran down the stairs. He and I stood in that hall with me pointing a gun at him for what seemed like an eternity (and I still have no idea how long it was) until the cops show up and they scream at I guess both of us "hands in the air" a cop from the stairwell behind me removed the gun from my hand shortly after. After me giving my statement to the cops a good 3 times and we clear up that I'm not getting arrested one of the cops stayed behind and asked me relatively candidly. If the guy had lunged at me, could I have pulled the trigger. He didn't give me time to think it through which I think was part of the point as he followed that up with. "You might need that to be a certain yes, soon." He further went on to explain that there were pretty decent odds that not only would someone bail him out, it actually likely will be the girl I was trying to help. That I, in the best case situation identified where I live within about 4 doors but almost certainly 1 of 2. He explained to me that some people are vengeful, even if he went to jail some people have friends that are vengeful on their behalf and the police aren't always gonna be quick. Unless you know it's do or die "don't put yourself in that position." Fortunately nothing ever came of it, but I'm not gonna lie I was happy to go when my lease ended.

Another fine example of why not to play captain-save-a-hoe. Also, vvomen like that are attracted to and go for aholes that treat them like a doormat, so they deserve each other. As the cop said, SHE will likely be the one to bail him out and is statically more likely to have initiated the domestic v (50 to 75 percent of dv is initiated by the vvoman, depending on the region).

I’m sorry to hear that, my dude, I became a father recently and it’s a question I ask myself all the time. The way I see it though, if we all have a look the other way mentality, we end up all as prey, in China they say “not my family not my problem, if I intervene I could get killed, or thrown in jail, I’ll just look after my family” But with each man looking after his own only, there is no way to stop evil people, and Chinese people die in droves every 3 - 7 generations. In Switzerland they say “this is my home and these are my people, I will defend them” and the Swiss have enjoyed peace and prosperity in there lands for 600 years.

I’m a retired firefighter in NYC. I have nightmares over one situation where there were 2 people to save. A 67 year old woman that was passed out on the floor and was “ savable” and a 4 year old surrounded by flames and the floor was collapsing beneath her. I made the decision to save the woman. Had I gone in for the child, we both would of died. My wife and children alone. For the longest time a felt like the worlds biggest POS. I felt like a coward. But I’m not Superman. As a fireman I was successful. As a father(even though the child wasn’t mine) I felt like a failure. But 1 year from now, I’ll be walking my oldest daughter down the aisle at her wedding.
@donmiller2908
@donmiller2908 2 жыл бұрын
You do what you can. As you said, the child was in a situation that couldn't be salvaged. Perhaps there is something wrong with me but I wouldn't have been bothered by that scenario. I would have looked at it objectively, decided the old woman was savable, the child was not, and went on from there. I would have been grief-stricken that a child died in a fire, but I wouldn't have blamed myself for her death because it could not have been prevented no matter what action I took. Emotions often hamper a calm, logical assessment.

My dad has had situations like this. In his younger days he was ex army and ran in a local gang. Anyone that caused trouble in the town him and his friends would grab chains and ride over there and sort it out. When my older brother got followed home by 5 lads he got up, walked out the house, cracked his knuckles and challenged them. They backed off. However he always told me and my brother "you 2 only ever fight if you absoloutley must, your good kids your not killers, i challenge them because i can and have been there and i dont care if i die. If one of you 2 die then i have failed as a farther and i may as well be dead". Those words always stuck with me and my brother and my dad did teach us how to fight (basics now not what he did) and his message to me was this "if you do get into a fight, show no compassion, dont let up and go all in until they are out. Because if you stop and show empathy to them your done". Basically my dads way of telling me if i must fight finish it dont walk away otherwise they will take advantage of my kindness

One of my brothers' close school friends got in a fight over 10 years ago. He punched the guy in the face, and that guy didn't wake up after being knocked out. My brothers' friend was charged, sentenced, and is still in prison today. He was late teens when the incident took place. Now he's in his 30s, still behind bars. I was young when it happened, so I only heard about it years later, and one thing my brother told me was that he avoided violence at all costs after that. Last year, a couple was arguing in his apartment building, and he heard them get physical; he went out to check on the girl the first time he listened to the altercation against his better judgment because he couldn't stand to hear such a thing taking place. She turned on him instantly, and he ended up in a dangerous situation with the couple ganging up on him and making accusations. Since then, he has minded his business whenever he hears the couple fighting. Be smart.

There is only Magnum. The reason police don't do anything half the time is because of liability. I had no problem stopping 15 people from attacking a chick on the light rail in Portland. Granted when negotiations started six were down, three fled and the rest had to contend with my colt. Never saw my knives or knew about my chain shirt sewn into my coat or my polo shirt that stops small arms fire. They left when I told them to leave at that point because any physical fight would no longer give them numbers advantage and the only thing they knew for certain is I was willing to end them. Please note I cannot share this story on KZfaq without using odd words, I would be blunt but it seems YT's censorship is in full swing. I served no time for this activity because I have a good lawyer. Think before you act.

We're all disposable. 6 days before my 18th, walking home from a late sesh in the gym....wakes up in hospital. I had memory loss of the situation but the police apparently had footage of the mugging (they wouldn't let me see it to protect the muggers identity LOL :/). Told me 5 blokes with 3 baseball bats had hit me in the back of the head and beat me on the floor to take my empty bag that had a bottle of water and my cheap ass shoes. Apparently, they were arrested trying to do it to someone else later & I got my shoes back. But my front teeth got knocked out & I've had a domino effect of teeth trouble ever since. The police never contacted me again, protected the muggers & every time I went to the police station to see what was happening they just told me to keep coming back later, nothing ever happened, no court, nothing. I've spent years of my life trying to live on moral principle, but that only works if everyone else is too. At the end of the day humans are still animals, protecting their own with no mercy, slowly learning to deal with the evolution of consciousness & it's potential for humanity.

100% true. I grew up in the hood, and glory to God, I got myself out. But I’ve lived through countless of these nightmare scenarios, but managing my responses. I got a pistol at 21, and never had to shoot anyone with it- because I learned how to see these things before they happen, and proactively avoid them. I worked at this athletic club, when I was 19-21. One day, a guy comes in and he’s getting crazy with me, getting in my face, etc. I’m thinking, “okay, this guys crazy”, because I’m 20 years old, SHREDDED(I was a personal trainer, former CQC in the Airforce), and I’m 6’4, 250 lbs. Guy looks like he’s on crack and he’s about 6’0, 120 lbs. I have a bit of a temper, so I tell him to get out. He says “make me”. I notice he’s wearing baggy clothes, hand in his left pocket, and his pupils are dilated. My gun is behind the counter, about 10 feet away from us, and in a locked case- so it’s useless to me. I say “Sir, what can I do to make this right? I don’t want any trouble and I’m not a bouncer, so I’m not going to try to kick you out.” He pulls his hand out of his pocket and has a pocket knife, and says “yeah, that’s right n*gga, you gon run yo pockets tho”, as he steps forward and I instinctively step back. I’m wearing basketball shorts, my wallet is in a locker, and I don’t even carry cash in it, which I tell him. A few of my other trainers finally come up, and he leaves. Well, about an hour later, that guy murdered the female leasing agent at the apartment complex, took her keys, went to her apartment, killed her BABY, cut it into pieces and threw it in a dumpster- before her husband got home. He was in a gang and had 2 other men helping him, one with a gun. They had the swat team come in and put holes in each of them with sniper rifles. I may have been way bigger than that woman he killed, but he had 2 other guys and a gun waiting for me. And I was so lucky ONLY because I had numbers on my side, and I was calm. That guy could’ve easily stabbed me in the neck and I would’ve been done. The point is that you need to stay safe. Use the buddy system. Legally carry. Be calm, and deescalate. Otherwise, you’re just talking shit/or digging yourself an early grave.

Yep, although I haven't been taught de-escalation tactics when I was studying TKD or boxing - both my trainers spoke at lengths about the fact that learning techniques and getting more fit is supposed to do one thing. Keep you safe. With confidence in your abilities, you are way more likely to be able to stand your ground and not give in to the pressure of the situation. People turn to violence on a dime so being able to keep your cool and deescalate is the way. The moment punches start flying the police involvement is inevitable, and that is never fun.

I feel like I definitely have a hero complex because I've been in situations where I wish someone came to save me and vowed that I'd never be a bystander. I had to stop inter-familial violence many times throughout my childhood, so jumping into action has become second nature to me. My husband however is a "grab your shit and run" type of person. Most recently we were running on a walking trail that eventually goes under a bridge. On the bridge is a road that has a restaurant very close by. You can smell the food from the walking trail. We heard yelling which immediately activated my PTSD and got my adrenalin pumping, but I couldn't see what was happening because the yelling was coming from the restaurant next to the bridge, and we were under the bridge. I was going to run up the stairs leading to the road to see what was happening because it sounded like someone was in danger. My husband grabbed my hand and made me keep walking, saying I have no idea what was happening and I'd blindly be putting myself, and him, in danger. In that moment, I resented him. The next day I read in the local newspaper that a man held his ex-girlfriend hostage at gunpoint behind the restaurant and the local police were able to intervene and save the girlfriend and arrest the guy. Had I run up those stairs, who knows what would've happened. And I appreciated that my husband held me back from blindly running into a dangerous situation.

This advice is very contextual. As a person who's lived in both dangerous and "civilised" places the answer to scumbags needs to be different in each place. In dangerous countries better keep your head low and move out the way asap. But in soft places being meek is actually counterproductive. Most criminals in these environments are aware of the fact that they can't kill you unless they wanna go to jail for half their lives over nothing. They're very used to robbing people who don't resist or fight back and therefore are not as proficient handling actual violence as one might think. I found in these situations going full aggro (without actually harming anyone) tends to intimidate or discourage them, because they know they can rob the next fool on the block without effort. I was once in a situation where 5 dudes tried to mug me and my friend as we were smoking weed on some bushes, it wasn't a straight out robbery and more of a "what you got there?" kind of situation where they slowly intimidate you into giving them your money. Kept my chill, offered them a puff, till one of the guys started straight out opening a pocket in my backpack (that I had on), I realised then and there that if I didn't resist these guys were gonna have us go through a real bad time. Thankfully I was a skater back then, so I straight up pushed the guy back, picked up ma skateboard and started yelling at them to fuck off, that I was gonna fuck em up, etc. etc. They got startled because the flash from chill to ultraviolent was too sudden and pissed off. Granted, we're talking about 20 something year olds in a civilised country, at best they would be packing knives, and they wouldn't have the balls to actually use them. But if you let them grow braver at your meekness they can actually turn dangerous. So idk, depends where you are. Whenever I had a bad situation in a place with real criminals I just got robbed like a bitch a gtfo. xD

When I lived in Belgium for a time my girlfriend there lived next to gas station. And I remember how terrifying it was to hear some of the stories about people every year breaking in to steal the little money from the register. And how there were laws in place there to say that you cannot inact violence of any kind of the person that breaks in, that you have to let them take the money and wait for the cops to arrive. Last time I heard it took them 5-7minutes to arrive by then the criminals were gone. Eventually they caught all but one of them, and made everyone nervous...so it further led to my girlfriend's aunt and uncle (who worked there also) purchasing handguns, which took awhile to get through processing, and installing a smoke machine with an alarm to go off as well. I've heard other stories as well but as an American it was always ridiculous to me of how under no circumstances they say there in Belgium you cannot defend yourself, not even mace. (And yes I am aware my gf's aunt and uncle took matters into their own hands and am forever proud of them for that ❤. I just hope they do not get in trouble for defending what is their's.)

Right.... but the argument of looking for trouble versus doing the right thing comes to mind. Simba put his life on the line based on a hunch that the female lions would help him fight......and he still could've died anyway. All when he was perfectly fine where he was at. He literally went looking for trouble, got many animals killed (good and bad), almost died, and made the decision after being guilt tripped into it by a female he wanted bone. Every civil rights leader and revolutionary figure could be seem as stupid for risking their lives. Fred Hampton had help yet still got himself and a whole lot of people killed. Yet he's a hero because he did the right thing.

I probably have a hero's complex but something I learned at a very very young age is that you do not jump in to active danger. You help yourself and the people that are immediately around you get out of it and you call the police. One time my friend got hit by a car so he was bound to a wheelchair and we were on his porch and out of nowhere two people start having a gun fight in the middle of the street right in front of the house, I broke his wheelchair so he can lay down behind a brick wall on his porch so he was safe. That is what a hero does. They do not go out in between bullets and act like they can stop them.

All of that changed when I see three of the rival gang memebers who had allegedly raped and murdered a girl got hanged from a tree by some unknown vigilante. They were strung up on a tree in the center of the plaza for everyone to see eyes bulging out tongue swelling up flies hovering it was gruesome and I knew this dudes I used to brawl with this dudes and now they're dead in a very bizzare way, the feeling is weird I'm not happy they died even though I dont like them and I aint sad either rather it's FEAR im feeling cause that could be me if I continued this crooked path. And the worst part is I wasnt abuse, my parents loves and supports me so in my mind theres really no reason to be acting like this other than being a show off and a braggart. Anyway some folks say it was the girls family members who did it some say it was the police no one really knows, one thing is certain tho this world is cruel and some folks would not hesitate to kill others, I'm talking about the three dead bstrds who deserved it and the vigilante who ended them. I wouldn't live with myself anyway if I did nothing, said nothing, called nobody. I'd do something. Anything. Even a small thing. I'd never let another human being be completely alone in a crisis. Man, or woman, I'd help. Just as I've been helped. I remember the two guys who jumped in to help me when some predatory men were intimidating me. I remember the time I followed a man, who was following a woman, I ran up to her and I said "Hey!! @@taloutezero Look, I get why you feel that way, but you have to understand that the situation isn't that easy. What that girl most likely saw, is her man not helping her if she was in trouble. With a good discussion, he can explain to her his thoughts and what lead him to take that decision. Most likely, "they are crackheads, I don't want to take a risk, but I especially want to make sure that YOU are safe". These are important discussions that make people grow. This girl probably had the privilege to never be in a violent environment, and didn't even realize the threat. Discussing will help her. When I was 19, I was in a club, and a guy I knew (not a friend) was super drunk and behaving like shit. And he did some stupid shit to a guy that was massive, very tall, very strong, and willing to teach him a lesson. My gf, same age felt like she had to intervene and tried to go in between as a reflex. She was 4.9 feet, 45 kg. I didn't want to intervene because obviously, the guy I knew was behaving like shit, so it would have to happen at some point. And I was neither willing to get injured, nor willing to stop having a good time for a stupid guy. My gf went to separate them (what a joke), the guy was reaaally mad, and I had to go in between to protect her. Fortunately, I was not drunk, and he saw it, he saw that I was not any trouble, and I apologized for the stupid guy, offered him a drink for the inconvenience, and was lucky enough that he had self control. After that, I went outside the club, kicked the stupid guy out, and told security to not let him come back inside, that he was looking for trouble (not very nice). And I had a discussion with her. And I told her that because of her being stupid, I could have lost her, she could be in the hospital, that her family would suffer... Or that because of her, I might be bleeding on the ground, and end up dead, in the coma, crippled for life. And I taught her that the world she knows is a microcosm, that there is violence in reality, and sometimes, not paying attention is enough to die. From that day on, she was paying attention to her surrounding, not trying to be a hero. She used to enter her car in the middle of the night in a city, checking her phone like it was safe, before leaving. I taught her that before opening the car, she should make sure that she is safe, open and lock the door as fast as possible, and to leave right away. To be extremely vigilant at a traffic light, and be ready to leave if something happens. To check as far as possible, and if something feels weird, weird behaviour of cars around, be ready for anything. Just FYI, I'm talking about Switzerland, so quite a safe country, but still... Shit happens. But I just wanted to share that story. Someone being ignorant isn't the problem. If she refused to learn and to understand that there were risks, danger around, I would not have made any of the efforts. But I would assume from your comment that you grew up in an environment where everyone is fully aware of the violence risk? If so, just understand that it's youtube, people comment from all around the world, and we don't face the same reality.

I agree. Before taking any action you should consider the worst outcome from that action and then decide if you still want to do it. This can be applied to many other areas. For example, a friend or relative may ask you to lend them money. You should ask yourself "Am I okay with never getting this money back?" Because you may never get it back. If you aren't okay with that then do not loan the money.

Can I genuinely ask you this question, no racism or bigotry involved. FYI, I am from Switzerland, rather safe in theory, and a white man. So the question is, are you American? Do you think that you were taught this because you're American, and stories like this happen all over the place? Is it because you might be black in the US, and no matter the circumstances, if there is violence involved, you're likely to end up in jail even if you're criminally innocent? I would like to visit the US, and your comment seemed interesting for my understanding of the environment. And here, we have lots of guns, but guns are not considered as an appropriate self defence tool, so barely anyone dies of firearms, and the ones that do are suicides, or tragedies within a household typically. So in my reflexes developed over time, guns have never been a major risk in interactions.

@@fabr5747 Switzerland is a lovely country. I skiied there decades ago. As for me, I am a white male American. I haven't owned a firearm in over 35 years. As boys my Mother taught me and my brothers to avoid physical conflict if at all possible. She taught us never to strike the first blow, however she also taught us that we should defend ourselves, and when defending ourselves we were to use any means necessary until the agressor was no longer a threat. I am neither pro nor anti gun anymore than I am I pro or anti hammer. They are both tools with an intended purpose. That said, if you are coming to America my advice is to avoid the major cities. That is where our country warehouses all the crazy people. It's very easy to enjoy everything America has to offer without ever setting foot in a major city. Even after I tried to explain to them that fighting wasn't a priority, getting her medical attention was. And if I'm fighting I'm not helping, and if I get knocked out I'm not helping and now there's two people that need help. They still looked at me like I wasn't a man. When I was 17 I joined up with CERT because my area was prone to intense natural disasters. They taught me the foundation. After that I joined a volunteer SAR (Search And Rescue) group where we would hunt for people lost. If you know someone in this group, we would help out the coast guard. We would train in the air or on the ground. Multiple times I was told "you cant save everyone" if a real thing ever happened. Well it did, I was running side seat, I wasnt doing radios that day. Some fisherman and his son got lost. Our service was uncompensated, as its considered something you do for your country. CG didnt find them and after a few days the search was called off. Since it was my first time, I felt physically ill and sick. I didnt go to work despite missing a few days already, I had to sit around all day. Finally one of the guys I was close to came to my house. He spoke with me about it. We talked for a few hours. He was a ex police officer and as we talked he explained to me two things about life that hang the most. I hung on every word. "You cant save anyone, if you get hurt yourself. If you are the rescue and you cant keep going, how will you rescue everyone else?" And "Sometimes, its either a act of God or Fate or whatever is out there. You cant save everyone, you cant find everyone, you cant rescue everyone. You can try, there is only so much we can do." When I feel myself slipping and I didnt do enough. After awhile I got used to doing SAR and wanted to pursue it as a career. But frankly it was messing with me and I decided to not do it anymore. For my own mental health, every training turned into a depressive state and reminder of the real thing. I soon took a chance with a job I had at the time and moved. Part of me felt happy to help others in their time of need. Part of me felt like I didnt do enough and failed. Though its those words that shaped me to take better care of myself. Danger can be anything and anyone. Its best to treat everything with caution.

Yeah, I did something like that in Morocco. I was living in a home whereas my Wife and I occupied the top floor and another couple occupied the bottom floor. The couple on the bottom floor, every night he'd beat his Wife. I could hear her screams. I could hit the smacks and thuds. It was horrific. Naive Canadian me, despite my Moroccan wife pleading that I ignore it, decided it would be a good idea to confront the husband. It came to a showdown between the two of us. He clearly was the short-fuse type. He could have grabbed a knife, and look how stupid the outcome of that would have been. Calling the authorities? HA! In Morocco a husband has a right to beat his wife. The police are on his side. I think the only thing that saved me was that I was an "etranger" (foreigner). Because the State would not have been on his side as Morocco and Canada has strengthening ties economically. A story of a murdered Canadian would harm those ties (potentially). The Moroccan Government guards and protects foreigners from places like Canada. I was stupid. Dumbest thing I ever did was punch the guy. He went down with the first hit. I got lucky. Because they have these safety patrols and they "fixed" everything after a sum was paid. Canadians don't know the real world. My fellow Canucks are super naive. Complaining about "micro-aggressions" in a world of unimaginable violence. Not realizing how good they actually have it. I live with this little thing called hyper-vigilance. I've learned to live in peace with it and to even use it as a gift rather than a curse. Every single thing from start to finish they talking is necessary for survival in today's world. It's bad in ok areas. Imagine what it's like in areas where violence is the replacement for speech? As a spectator, we have time to think without emotional involvement. We have to use it to our advantage to make the best decision possible for everyone. Sometimes emotional agony, is much better than physical escalation and mobbing because you were "brave"

Got into a small accident while out on a bike ride with a friend. It was just a few scraps and bruises for my friend and the other person involved in the accident. But we got surrounded by the local crowd who were hell bent on escalating the issue and blaming the whole thing on us. We were pretty exhausted by then as well, no cell reception either and the crowd was all young guys with knives and long blades. It was a nighmare and that was my first time going through something like that. Worst part was, more of them kept showing up as time passed. I was pretty much convinced we'd be beaten to death and dumped in the woods there. So I did the only thing I thought I could do to delay the inevitable- and that was to whisper to my friend to act more disoriented and injured than he really was, so that the crowd doesn't get to him immediately as he was the "prime culprit". While I the "accomplice", as hopeless as I was, kept talking with the most reasonable tooking person in the crowd trying to buy time. Luckily for us, a few elderly people from the area showed up and managed to convince the crowd to stay their hand until the cops arrived. Man I was never so happy to see the cops as as much as I did that day lol That experience definitely did a number on me but it has served me well over the years. Knowing your own limits and being able to swallow your pride to ask for help from others are imo absolutely necessary skills. And learning them through such life altering experiences means you'd Never forget it, atleast your instincts won't ;)

In Jamaica, especially in the ghetto, if as a man you assert yourself in a situation like this, you're as good as dead. Simply put, you're not allowed to step to certain men and if you do, expect to either be beaten or shot. You can't call the police either because they're not showing up for something as 'stupid' as a group of guys heckling a lone female. So unfortunately, the best thing to do is walk away and hope the 'Don' fixes the issue.

Survival of the fittest does not always mean survival of the strongest/bravest. It means survival of the one who is sometimes smart, sometimes cowardly, sometimes brave, and sometimes smallest or biggest. In the end, it means survival of the one who is ALIVE. That is the key word in all this. You need to stay ALIVE.

@@miladyartistic5324 - Nah, our materialistic society tells people that they have no value if they have no money. But love for others requires love of self. So if you convince someone that they are worthless, that means that you've made everyone else worthless to them as well. So if their life is worthless and they have nothing to lose, why would they hesitate to hurt someone else who's life is equally worthless to them? That's the problem with creating hopeless people who feel like they have nothing of value to lose. If you don't believe things can really get better or worse, then nothing you do really matters. So there's no reason not to do terrible things, because it doesn't really matter.

I've had to learn this lesson the hard way. I can confirm. It's gut wrenching to do nothing, but many times the situations resolves itself, is ongoing despite intervention, or there's just nothing that can be done by you other than calling the police and even that often makes matters worse. That is why now I observe and use good judgement to assess the situation, judgement I developed over a lifetime of being around or caught up in similar situations. More often than not it's better to just do nothing. If that is not satisfactory, get professional training, gain a lot of experience in safe scenarios such as observing without interacting or as a part of training with professionals. Even then so-called professionals often make matters worse and are bad sources, and knowing who best to go to for training can be difficult. Most importantly if you act, act with respect, diplomacy, confidence, humility, and with safety in mind after observing and assessing the situation.
