Thanks Nic for this video. My shop has never done very well during Christmas. My niche is women's self-care and despite having Christmas themed products, they have never really taken off. I will definitely take your advice on board and see what more I can do from the gift slant.

Usually, I do the best in July. I’m selling mostly Czech glass beads. Maybe people are making items to sell for Christmas? I wonder if it will be really slow this year or good again in July.

Due to a mistake on my part for listening to BAD advice, I’ve fallen bellow 100 (currently 91) and slowly making the climb back up. I’m listing only one item per day, and at the moment, I’m playing the “One step forward, two steps back” game. I have a small lull, before another barrage of expiring listings hit me. I’ll be well over 100 listings, not quite 200, but I’ll be pushing 150-175 for sure! Bring on Q4!!

Hi Nick, would you recommend creating multiple listings for a product and the different colour ways? Or have one listing and variations for colour? Thanks, Ayla
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 19 күн бұрын
Hi Ayla, if you are talking about POD, generally the variations can go in the product. If you are making products yourself, then the answer is more complicated and depends on the amount of listings you are creating, how many listings you already have, and what your listing plans are for the rest of the year. Book in for a free discovery call with me if you are not doing POD, and I can hear about your situation in more detail, and let you know how we can work together in a consultation to move your store forwards, link to do this is below: etsy-consultant.com/services/discovery-call/

Great video. I’ve been following you since I have started my shop, only six weeks, just had second organic sale. Being an artist I am aware that my rate of sales will be slower. My questions are 1) should I make a separate category for Christmas items 2) would hand painted Christmas decorations be a hit or miss. Thinking of selling packs of hand painted Christmas decorations 3) Should you only start selling Christmas decorations in September or could you start listing now?

Just catching this - I have had my shop open since October '24 - it seems I have been doing all the things you say are a waste of time! Well, it checks out as I have sold 3 items organically (not to friends), and I need to get it together. I have TWO months now to get some listings published and be at 100. I definitely need to hone into a niche, I watched another video by you, and it talked about that- I'm a bit lost, but I am going to apply what you have said here as best as I can along wth that niche thing. Why is it so hard to think of one??

Yes, better quality mockups help with branding, just make sure that the product in the mockup is the product for sale at your POD supplier.

Thanks Nick, Should we have the word ‘gift’ or ‘Christmas gift’ in tags and titles and should gift wrapping be offered free of charge??
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 2 ай бұрын
Hi Jayne, if the listing is Christmas related, yes you should, and the choice of whether to charge or not for gift wrapping comes down to you, I would advise that you charge a fair price for that service.

Do we need to use commas at all in our titles? Also, any idea how long it may take the average store to begin making sales if it follows the one-listing-per-day rule? Thanks, Nick!
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 2 ай бұрын
Commas make everything easy to read, it comes down to personal choice, I use commas. Generally, by the time you get to 100 listings you should have made a few sales.

My store is not yet open. I’m still creating my initial batch of items. I plan on opening around June 15. Should I just start with adding Xmas items since the summer is slow and I will be close to having 100 items by September when things pick up, or do a mix of non seasonal and seasonal or just add non seasonal now and start adding seasonal in Sept. if a mix, what would be a good mix? 50-50, 60-40? Thanks.
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 20 күн бұрын
Hi Rebecca, I would start adding a mix of listings, go heavier on the non seasonal, so about 60/40 is good.

I sell plant cuttings and propagations, I have sold a couple as gifts for people but I’m not sure how to personalise plants, although I could offer some gift wrapping. Spring and summer are usually good months as a plant seller, Christmas is a no go for me because the weather is cold and plants don’t make great gifts for under a tree. Any suggestions. I have 30 products, so I can definitely push that higher as my cuttings root and get to saleable size. Just been taking your advice on SEO and hopefully putting it into practice. Thank you.

Personalised pots? You could keep it simple with colour choice, write their name or a message on, or really go to town depending how artistic you're feeling. Or those little stakes that you stick in next to the plant to identify it? Could you make some quality ones of your own with space to add the recipient's name or a short gift message next to the plant info? Make a pick & mix listing so people can choose their own selection? Maybe 3 plants & an 'extra' for a set price? Pot, feed, gloves, coloured stones/ glass nuggets to top the soil? (Maybe check whether they'd be OK under Etsy's TOU. Supplies?) Or maybe fewer plants & more add ons would make more sense? You could add a surcharge for personalisation on the pot or even embroider the gloves if you're crafty. (That's probably asking a lot though) 😅 They'd look lovely gift wrapped in a little wooden box with a gift tag / printed label with care info. Not really personalisation but a small leaflet with botanical info, photos at maturity, history, folklore (?) companion planting, dangers etc might be appealing if you regularly sell the same few plants? If you were able to list them all in one leaflet, it could encourage repeat custom, too. Forgive the stream of consciousness ramble! Hope there's something useful in there 😅
@hannahmitchell87
@hannahmitchell87 2 ай бұрын
You could paint pots with blackboard paint then decorate/ name etc with a chalk pen on one side & on the other have a little log that they can fill in for the last feed, water, prune etc? Or for a kids version, outline a basic picture that they can colour themselves? Just include a tiny pack of coloured chalks? I'll stop now!

How do POD sellers get around the issue of perhaps not having product on hand to film videos of? I'm just starting out and don't really have budget to invest in buying samples of every product.

My store hit a wall few months ago after finally picking up and not made a sale since, conversion rate still 2.6% for this year which you reckon is good?? I’m actively refreshing my store, listing every day, new photos the works I am in Australia and don’t think it gets as many customers though, the customs costs i have found put people off
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant Ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment. The conversion rate is not bad, we found that there were no custom fees for orders going to the US - It does depend on the value of the order. Etsy buyers usually pay any local sales tax due on their order which is then remitted by Etsy on your behalf so you shouldn't find too many problems.

Hello Nik, My questions are not related to this video I have heard so many negative things about Etsy and I am wondering if I should just go with goimagine. I only saw them on U Tube a few days ago. I am purely hand-made , no helpers. Realistically, I will have products to have a shop in summer of 2025, after I have retired. For now watching and learning mostly from you. Please consider making a video on how to create a link and a business website or a booklet( will buy it ) I bought your book recently. I typed in How to create a link and got nowhere. Blessings.

Etsy as a whole may be quieter in summer but, with respect, it helps not to speak in absolutes, like, "In June, July & August, your shop is going to make a lot less sales..." July & August were my best months last year. Not all shops see an increase in Q4, nor do they all tank in summer. Good luck to any new sellers just starting out!
@etsyconsultant
@etsyconsultant 2 ай бұрын
Agreed Hannah, based on my experience I would say around 70% drop, somewhere around that figure. I monitor dozens of shops constantly, and they are all dropping at the moment, this is also being fueled by flat market conditions, and the simple fact that there is a LOT of negative press around Etsy at the moment. I also monitor the platform product count, and that is dropping as well almost 1 million down today from middle of May.
@hannahmitchell87
@hannahmitchell87 2 ай бұрын
@etsyconsultant Thanks for the clarification Nik! 70% sounds legit. I'm probably in a minority here but I'd be interested to hear the stats & trends you've noticed in a regular video, with hypotheses as to why, since you have a rare perspective from your consultancy work. It's odd that products have dropped yet sellers increased 15% last period. I suppose it would all be speculation but I find the data interesting 😅
