Great story Rick. Loved Alan Hale Jr. He and Bob Denver were a team made in Heaven. A similar story about Andy Clyde, one of the original Keystone Kops, when he went to an early audition in his career. During the audition, Andy was asked by the director if he knew how to ride a Bull? Andy replied, "How do you think I got to this interview ? They were the real Stars!!!!

Even though Gilligan’s Island was not particularly one of my favorite shows, when I did watch, Alan Hale was my favorite. He was fun, and I loved the dynamic between the Skipper and Gilligan. He was obviously determined and ambitious to make that trek to the audition. He was the perfect Skipper!

I love Alan Hale. He was a person with work ethics, and a humanitarian. He didn't just give $$$. He went to hospitals and visited with the children in there. He had a friend he did this with. He was not a complainer. He did his job and he was a kind person. What more does this world really need. ❤

The whole concept of hitchhiking to and from a flight is unimaginable now. To think he depended on a thumb, a smile, and a duffel, to get to the audition is a unique snapshot of the early '60's.

60 years ago Southwest Utah was quite isolated. It’s not surprising, at the time, that he was able to hitchhike from St. George to Vegas because it was safer and people were more trusting in that part of the country. Today a person would likely be helicoptered from the shoot to an airport. Even Saint George has a commercial airport now.

The western Hale and Homeier made together in 1964 appears to have been Bullet for a Badman starring Audie Murphy and Darren McGavin. Homeier was an excellent heavy in old westerns, one of my favorites being The Tall T with Randolph Scott.

a great story and shows what type man he was to go through Hell so to speak to get a part.........he loved playing the Skipper as mentioned he wore the outfit all his life....even made a sick child's day when he visited him at the hospital and told the child the Show was returning and He would play Gilligan this time............at the time Alan Hale JR. was sick and lost a lot of weight and the child noticed it...so he told that story to explain his appearance.

It's nice to read about Alan Hale's friendship w/ Skip Homeier. I've seen Mr. Homeier on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, and i'm happy to read what a good friend he was. As far as the audition goes, I've read that Alan Hale got the part because he was the only actor who could hit Gilligan w/ his hat and not appear to be mean. I've read that 1 actor who auditioned but failed to win the role was Carroll O'Connor. Imagine Archie Bunker as the Skipper! :)

THAT is true dedication, and from what I've read this is typical of Alan Hale Jr. He ran a restaurant in Los Angeles after the show ended and NEVER had any trouble getting people to work at his place because he was such a great boss! As to the show, when I watched it as a kid, I thought they were supposed to be father and son. Only later did I find out that that was not supposed to be true. That shows how well they worked together. This show is a perfect example of superb casting; Every actor was perfect in their roll.

Alan Hale was not only a great actor but a good friend. Him and Errol Flynn acted together and were good friends too. Alan often was in Errol"s movies. Like Robin Hood and the Sea Hawks. Maybe others. In real life, they often played jokes on each other. Alan Hale always stood by his friend, Errol in spite of Errol's being accused of rape. Which was not true. And other problems he had. Proves what a great friend, Alan was to him and each other. Good video, Rick! Interesting also. Wanted to share about them both. Got info from Errol's documentary, "My Wicked Ways." Good video to see, Rick. Take care.

There's no way Alan made it from St. George to LA and back in 6 hours. It's a 2 hour drive from St. George to Las Vegas, then you have the airport, the flight, another aiport, the drive to the studio and the audition...that alone is likely more than 6 hours. I'd say you're looking at at least 12 hours for the trip there and back. So props to his buddy...not 6 but 12 hours waiting!

I remember hearing this story from Mike Rowe on his podcast. I don't think he mentioned Skip Homeier by name. Skip appeared on Star Trek (original) a couple of times. Always hated that show from the time I was very young (yeah, i was REALLY different) but the actors were top notch and true professionals. Alan did a series in the early '50s - the name escapes me - but it was a detective show that ran two seasons, kind of like Hart to Hart of the 1950s. Check it out if you can find it. Russell Johnson starred with Peter Breck in my favorite TV western Black Saddle. Bob Denver will forever be Maynard G. Kreps to me, but lets not forget The Ghostbusters with Forest Tucker.
