I too was under a rock until “boy with love”. I thought who are these guys and why a they sooooo popular? I watched them perform with Halsey at the billboard awards and was impressed. I then went down the rabbit hole and watched countless videos and react videos becoming a fan at 47 years young. They are such good people and their struggle to get to where they are today makes me root for them even more. Their message is so positive. Their videos are so creative and filled with positivity. They’ve helped so many people get through tough times. I’m so glad I gave them a chance. Their music is by far more superior to most American music. Their lyrics are deep. Their diss tracks tear up their haters while being respectful. Their personalities crack me up. Amazing stuff. V is my bias. He is a triple threat. Can sing, can dance, and can act. Dude cracks me up. Good stuff.

The reason why BTS is different is because they started promoting themselves through social media, showing the human side of the artist and business and that attracts and retain more fans.

I also wish that theyll not cave to the pressure the industry and everyone around them expects of them. In an interview, RM talks about how pressured they were and the fear BTS felt if they fell out of love with music, so he channeled those thoughts into BLACK SWAN and i tell you it is pure art. 💜💜

It does seem like their success was overnight to those of us that were not familiar with them until last year, BTS found me during this covid pandemic with Dynamite at the VMA's. I found them cute and charming, their choreo and their energy, how they seemed to love performing even without an audience was enough to intrigue me into looking up their songs on KZfaq. I had no idea then how deep the BTS rabbit hole was, lol. I have read that RM is conflicted that their biggest hit to date was not written or produced by them and is not in korean, but in english. The song was supposed to be a gift, fun and uplifting to help us through the tough times caused by covid and it worked too well. I am also always impressed by how at all the recent award ceremonies they keep saying they'll keep improving, they'll make better songs, put on better stages, etc., the sky is the limit for them! Yes, to add to what this guy said created their longevity....their characters, for sure. The way they live their lives. And, their ability to connect with their fans on such a personal level...their willingness to be vulnerable, and their code of whatever you want to call it...morality...that keeps them humble and grateful. Also, let's give credit where due....Bang PD (and the entire BigHit staff) has set an incredibly high precedent with the way he put these guys together and the way he "brought them along". I think he must be an incredible person.

18:52 as far as I know, most of k-pop group do that since Japan is one of the most largest music markets for k-pop (China and Japan, thanks to the senior groups k-pop makes a way to have it’s place in these markets). These two market are most of k-pop groups’ first target.(Big and have high affordability) And as you know, Japanese are quite preserve. They don’t listen songs which have other languages and don’t even listen songs from other countries that much. That’s why they have to make a Japanese version to hit the chart. Even their concerts there, they do sing in Japanese and also have special Japanese songs during concert for J-ARMYs too. I know it’s quit interesting that they don’t to this to hit U.S. chart considering having the same case with Japan but I think BTS didn’t plan to promote in U.S. at first. And right now when they are finally boom in U.S., it’s also the time when they are proudly present their culture and language that they don’t have to change anything more just to please everyone and getting attention.(They still do some wonderful Japanese songs and I love it.) They have come so far now, and ARMYs love and are ready to understand what they are standing for through their songs. P.S. Every kpop group releases Japanese versions of their albums because Japan is the 2nd biggest music market in the world (1st is US) much more bigger than China or any other asian country and if kpop groups wants to be successful in asia they need to secure Japan first also most korean idols know how to speak Japanese better than Chinese or English and since they’re neighboring countries there’s great interest for kpop groups in Japan so when they release a Japanese album it sells more than their korean albums for example in 2020 BTS’s MOTS:7(korean album) sold 455K copies in Japan but MOTS:7-The Journey(Japanese album) sold 658K copies and the korean album was released 6 months before the Japanese one. Some of the other kpop groups started to release English versions of their albums instead of Japanese these days but they don’t sell that well.. sadly not all the kpop groups can be successful in the west like BTS did but it’s easier to be successful in Asia and for that they definitely need to be successful in Japan. people always underestimate bts' global popularity back when they were rookies but although they didnt make much noise in korea at the time they were making appearances on the international billboard charts regularly from 2014/2015 onwards.

I love this documentary too. As a school librarian, I realize how what you choose to include and leave out can really affect how accurate it is, but for a half hour doc, I think it does really well. And right now there is the deep dive documentary in the making. TheRiseOfBangtanOfficial YT channel has released the first 5 parts of theirs and I think they're only up to 2014. I am loving it! I have seen a lot of BTS material, but they have come up with things I had never even heard references to.

Reasons BTS makes Japanese albums: 1) historic diplomatic and economic relationship between Japan and Korea; 2) Japan music industry revenue is much bigger than that of Korea. There has always been cultural exchange between Japan and Korea both in historic and modern times. Korean artists regularly promoted in Japan because the Japanese market is simply much much bigger. For reference, US music market (world biggest) is $11b USD, and Japan (2nd biggest) is $7b USD. Capturing a slither of Japan market share means big revenue for a Korean artist operating in a much smaller country. This is why Kpop always needed to expand beyond its borders to reach more audience, meanwhile Japan never did because its domestic market is big enough for consumption. This is also similar to how non-English artists releasing English music to break into US or UK markets.

Your talk of fate/kismet/serendipity re: how they became a group is actually represented in their single for their BTS World game soundtrack, called "Heartbeat" It's sort of an "alternate universe" (but not the BTU) game, and the video shows them all in an AU where this "fate" comes into play. You should watch that MV, I think you would really like the premise.

I agree with pretty much everything you said in this video, heh. I think they have been under a great deal of strain and many of them have in fact straight out said that. I mean, look at Jin who indicated he's been struggling with imposter syndrome over their success. =/ And RM posted a video in KZfaq a couple of months ago just kind of talking through his thoughts out loud and he flat out said that his feelings towards Dynamite's success is 'mixed' and that he has always said that music transcends language, but he has to admit he's come to doubt that sometimes. And yeah, I think their success is rooted in their genuine, honest openness about their selves and the fact that they write about real things and real human experiences, and that their music expresses meaningful values and ideas.

And remember this, they were just from a small, SMALL company to do that

The only thing in this video I have a problem with is when he talks about Jimin he makes it sound like Jimin didn't have any difficultly but that's not true. Jimin had very little experience in singing at the beginning and several times before they debuted he was nearly kicked out of the group. It is believed this is because of his different dancing style , as he'd done contemporary and popping & locking which is different to what they did on stage. Although I also believe it was partially to do with his shorter training period. So it's safe to say all 7 of them had things to overcome when they started out which makes there journey even more amazing and I believe you're right it was fate.

This was such a great video! I hadn’t watched the documentary before, so thank you so much, I finally got to watch it! I agree with you on so many points. While Dynamite was great (my first group comeback I experienced, after Agust D’s D-2), I think it is a bit sad that it took an English song for people to acknowledge them. It shows some kind of ignorance towards other cultures and languages. But I’m so happy for BTS, to get the recognition they deserve, I’m devastated that it took Corona for me to finally get hooked, after discovering them in 2016. I’m just glad that these boys stayed true to themselves and I wish them all the best in the world! I hope that they will always enjoy what they’re doing, that the pressure of the public won’t damage them, as I’ve seen it with my favourite girl group from the UK, Little Mix.

For me watching this documentary that makes a summary of their carier is very meaningful because I was there since the beginning, when i was 10 i discover k pop watching a k drama that pop out in my KZfaq page and 3 years after when i was 3 and pretty much into k pop following the grups that where popular at that time BTS debut , their debut was also the year I started high school , my high school experience started awfully but that also make me closer with bts since their first trilogy was school releted , as thing's were getting harder for me I was growing up with their music evolution and messeges , at the time I couldn't watch me in the mirror i had them starting to tell everyone about self love , now that i will make 20 this year and 10 years with k pop this kind of recaps make me super emotional but is nice to see this with a super cool reactor like you . Love this documentary and your detailed honest reactions! You know, I always find one fault in all of these documentaries about Jin - because they say “oh he was found on the street because of his looks” but he was in university for theater. Big hit is very strategic -yes they may have stopped to talk to him but outside a university. I feel once they realized he was an actor, that fit the vision they had for this group I believe they knew they needed him. They would make him a singer and dancer because he was already strong in acting and they had a storyline planned.

Personally I don’t think they changed but it’s the progress of their concept, BTS don’t follow trends musically but they make music suitable for the storytelling and the album concept. You will realise they have a happy tune in some albums and dark tunes in another album

35:05 Yeah, I know right.☺️ Dynamite used to be a single song(not the title songs for the albums that people will keep their eyes on) before BTS put it in Be album. It supposed to be the cheering song for ARMYs during covid-19 time too.

The conscription in Korea is a range from 18 to 28, where 28 is the last year in which you have to serve, you can choose to serve before you're 28. However, Korea did recently pass the BTS law to give exemptions or deferment to popular idols, which previously didn't exist. Classical musicians such as pianists and violinists were exempt from military service but idols weren't as pop music was deemed to not really have a cultural contribution in the past. On why they'd release Japanese songs. Japan is a big market for music and kpop. Also, it's easier to translate a song from Korean to Japanese rather than other languages, as the grammatical structures are similar and the fact that a lot of words from both languages are derived from Chinese and they have similar phonologies.

In re: why not call it a great song instead of a great kpop song? Well today, I think we made one step forward with that. Esquire named them as one of the Top 10 Pop Bands of All Time. With The Beatles, The Supremes, Queen.

I love Dynamite but I really missed them singing in Korean. It's not BTS without the Korean. I'm Welsh and Welsh speakers throw in English words amongst the Welsh. I love hearing the English words popping up and find it so much fun to try to learn the Korean that surrounds them.

I think they have had some struggles with the pressure of being as successful as they are. You should watch their acceptance speeches for artist of the year at mama 2016 and 2018. I think however that they have a good support system and they’re very lucky to have each other as well. Also when you have time you should listen to their Japanese song Lights. BTS chose to sing this song to give ARMY and the world a happy uplifting song during the very depressing time of Covid-19. Since they had not written or produced this song, it didn't have that "BTS-ish" sound (which is hard to define). It's a sad commentary of the western music industry that this was the song which the recording academy chosen for BTS Grammy consideration. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled they got the Grammy nod, but they had so many more amazing songs they had wrote, produced and performed in 2020 such as Black Swan etc. Oh well, I was extremely happy that in the BE album, BTS went back to their "roots" (with the exception of Dynamite). BTS and Big Hit are extremely intelligent in understanding the music trends and allow themselves to grow their own individual musical styles. Keep up the great reactions! The biggest music market in the world is the United States and Japan. Since Japan market was already open to Korean artists compared to the US market lot of Kpop artists produce Japanese albums. Korean market alone will not support the entertainment company so they have to find marketing revenue elsewhere. Back in the early 2010 Korean music was not that well known in the world so the competition for the market within Korea was really fierce. I really enjoy watching your reactions. It brings to mind how I was when I first discovered BTS in 2017.

Japan is a large market for music, so many Asian artists do Japanese versions. There is at least one song in Chinese, and their pronunciation is ok, but they sound best in their own language.

About military service and BTS..I personally feel that BTS has already done so so much for their country, and for the youth of the world, that they should be exempted from the mandatory military service.

18:34 Japan is the second largest music market in the world (first is the US) and physical albums sell very well there. Korean cultural exports such as dramas, movies, music, and food have been especially popular in Japan throughout the past few decades, resulting in the term "Korean wave" (韓流). I think creating original songs gives JP fans more of a reason to buy JP albums. They're special in a way since they're not for the domestic KR market. Much like how Dynamite is special to us westerners.

Hi, I am back. Korea did recently change the rules. You have to go when your 30 or before. And they shortened it instead of 2 yrs u do 18 months. Army believes its due to BTS but no one is saying anything. BTS has said they are proud to serve their country. But Army has no clue what that will look like when the time comes. Jin is 28 now yes and he is 29 in Korean age. Nice reaction. I liked this video too. Life Goes On was #1 on Billboards the 1st Korean song ever. BTS are Kings! After watching Fix You I decided to go beyond the BTS essentials playlist and listen to their whole album! OMG I had the same feeling with yours on dynamite when it was released!! Cuz I'm korean, I even felt little bit awkward with a dynamite which in English so I didn't really care about the song even though It sounded goodXD. But later I thought about it and decided to say that last year was tough year with corona and people actually suffered with it. So maybe BTS wanted to cheer us up with punky disco song and that's why It's written in English to be related easily to worldwide.

PLEASE react to the mistreatment of BTS by affectaed itll give some key information that not many channels have. i love this video by asian theory but there are some flaws like how he mentioned YG in the beginning which confuses new people getting into bts. YG and BIGHIT are two different companies with two different ceos and the kpop industry BARELY had any hand in bts success. regardless of small details they dont add to bts story but they do give people a chance to link their success to people who were the reason for a lot of their struggles. which were the big 3 companies and to a extent they still try to hurt bts with their media power. anyways please react to it :)

One month late but still, as much as I love BTS and Dynamite^ but you are absolutely right! Dynamite was a very smart choice to get higher and even bigger and it worked, what they absolutely deserve! Maybe thats why all other songs on their last album BE are completely BTS songs! Like Life Goes On for example))) And all other songs boys created themselves.

Korea has a history with Japan. altough they are not so keen on each other politically. the cultures are very similar. that makes japan as one of the first foreign countries to promote musically. Also the Japanese music market is known for being closed up and does not welcome external influence... korean acts find themselves in a situation where if they want to promote in that market successfully it has to be in japanese.

Another fact is that evn in 2015 bts was having “first kpop act” names attributed to them, but this was all swept under the rug by the kpop industry and kmedia. BTS ad complete media silence evn during 2017. A known korean critic came forward saying “After BTS grammy nomination the media that contacted him wanted to sweep it under, making it look like not significant” he was so mad and ranted abt it in a talk show abt how while artists from other co got more reception for doing lesser things than BTS. This is also same for the western media, the reception abt BTS were so different despite their success and selling evn western artists over and over again

Concerning Dynamite I love the song but it barely scratches the surface with BTS and it rubs me the wrong way when they were nominated with that song for the Grammy's and then to not even recieve the award for such a ground breaking song that broke so many records and went to number one on the charts and stayed number one until Savage love came out and continues to be up high on the charts to this day since it's release i just don't understand how they didn't win their category and the individuals who did although I am happy they won I just don't see how that song should have won and that performance in particualr was not it if the grammy's wanted to send the right message they should have gone a different route in my opinion but then again I'm biased but still... Anyways I love your videos your responses are always so thoughtful and you seem to really pay atention to what's in front of you!

Japanese markets are really huge and important for korean bands usually, and the language is easier for them to learn too i guess, so you can see lot of kpop grps focusing on japanese markets. BTS funnily wasnt evn thinking of them conquering the west😂 So they didnt actually have any special promo for the US until they won their first billboard award in 2017. Its crazy how none of these were pre planned. Becs tons of kpop grps have tried hard to expand in US and failed to make it.

JK moved out of his home at only 14, which is why the members always joke that they 'raised him'. As trainees, they all left their homes/hometowns and moved to Seoul to stay in a dorm together, and the younger ones went to school together while training. So JK was literally still a child when he was living with the other guys in a different city from his parents. Jin would even drive him to school in the mornings and buy him food. =)

you're right that you've to serve in the military by 28 previously. however korean age works differently than international age. Koreans when they are born is considered 1 year old and instead of adding 1 year to your age on your birthday, they add 1 year on every new years. So jin was 28 last year and on 1st of jan 2021 he turned 29 in korean age and not on his birthday in december just for the clarification. thankfully the bts law was passed before that and he can wait upto 2 years before he needs to serve. i hope that clears things up.

About the Japanese verisions, it's quite common in K-pop, reason is Japan is the second biggest music market in the wolrd and it's more welcoming towards Asian artists.

Japan is always the main market for K-pop, most of K-pop group produce Japanese songs, albums and fan meetings for the JP market. Idols even need to learn Japanese as a part of their training. Actually, BTS's live performances held in JP has better quality or more special set up, highly recommend you to check them out. Fun fact, you may notice they also have their mv, even outfit, makeup, hairstyle made especially for JP market which was different from their appearance in Korean and other markets.

Avoid the BTS "Crash Course" videos. It shows clips of every video - many reactors have complained about the spoilers.

So as u said why call it one of the k pop greatest songs ever well because as u know it changed BTS,bighit,and the k pop industry "life's". Yes there was and is amazing k pop groups known internationally, but BTS paved the way/opened the doors for the k pop industry and those not very known groups/companies to go further on internationally. and thanks to the recognization that BTS had, they r one of korea most important people/group because not just k pop but korean culture was spread further more internationally which attracted people to korea which made south korea gain so many visits which is important for them and they've grateful for all of that . I have more to say yet don't know how to put it into words but that is all I could think of i just hope u have an idea of why it is one of the greatest songs. I completely agree!!! Don’t get me wrong I loveeee dynamite it’s amazing and I streamed it for weeks, but it’s annoying that the first time they get #1 on billboard was for an English song that doesn’t even show them at their maximum capacity because for example yoongi and hobi couldn’t even show off their amazing rapping since it was English 😪🥺 still just happy that they got #1 because it was long over due

That documentary gives you an overall view of each members personalities and organizes your thoughts and views of them. You come to better understand why you are so drawn to BTS after watching that video.😇
