Yeah, it's much more faithful to the book in terms of atmosphere and character personalities. Probably also because there are much better actors playing here. And it's obviously better directed. And the teeth, they were described exactly like that in the book.

I'm not afraid of circus clowns or birthday clowns, however, I'm afraid of the monster-like clown "Pennywise." The original from the year 1990 scared me as a kid and it's a long movie. Definitely over 3 hrs. The 2 newer movies are great horror movies and the technology is way better.

This movie was so unsettling and creepy when I first saw it. I really liked how sometimes Pennywise was on the screen but the movie didn't turn it into a jumpscare. Sometimes a thing or person would look out of place in the background and if you paid attention, you'd notice him. Absolutely amazing.

The opening scene with the ominous piano music only to discover that it's the mom playing is a really cute/funny bit, and does a lot to establish how messed up the parents are in this town.
@ismayb754
@ismayb754 9 ай бұрын
Of course if you've read the book or seen the original 1990 movie you know it's the mom playing the piano because that's an important part of how the scene is set. Just a shame they used the wrong music as it's stated in the book (and the 1990 movie) to be Fur Elise by Beethoven. This not only sets the scene perfectly for the sweet interaction between Bill and Georgie, and creates such a nice atmosphere of the warm family home, but then also juxtaposes beautifully against the horror to come. Watching the scene descend from a bright, warm, comfortable vibe to something horrific is so effective. The 2017 movie lacked this subtlety which is probably why they felt a more sinsiter piano piece was better, because "we're a scary movie, so we better use ominous music I guess". Also explains why the scene is set so ominously from the start with the de-saturated picture, dim lighting and ominous vibe. "We're a scary movie. Better look scary!" There's just no layers to that. It's a shame movies aren't as deep or nuanced as they used to be.

TheGarethLusk: One of the things I remember when this movie came out was how a lot of girls and women were into Pennywise because Skarsgard was the actor. It was hard not to see him underneath the makeup, but it was still funny to see posts with girls calling Pennywise "clown daddy" or whatever it was. It reminded me of an article of an interview with Clive Barker in which he talked about how really surprising it was to get letters from women swooning over Pinhead. haha. The same thing with some of the Halloween-focused channels, who talk about getting similar messages about Myers. Can't say that's new. Darth Vader has an estrogen brigade. haha

One thing I really like about this version is how Beverley's character is portrayed. When it comes to one on one with the boys you can see Pennywise actively trying to scare them but when it comes to Bev all Pennywise does is sit back and let her father do the scaring for him. The boys are more scared your typical imaginary monsters, but Beverley isn't since she lives with her monster. Drives home the point that monsters do exist and are not just in our imagination.

The thing about all the fears is that they're all representative of existential fears. Bill's is a fear of grief. He is afraid of the implications that come with admitting Georgie is dead that's why Pennywise torments him with Georgie. Eddie's fear is hypochondria but that one is pretty obvious and thats why the leper. Richie is afraid of clowns buuuut we'll put a pin in that for now. Beverley is afraid of growing up as a woman because of what that might mean for her relationship with her father. Ben has the least developed fear but I think ya'll are right that its a fear of history. Mike fears death and victimization. Thats why pennywise uses his parents tormented death against him. I think Stan's is the most interesting though. That painting is hanging in his father's office. Stan's dad is a rabbi who is preparing him for his bar mitzvah. Stan goes to that office to learn the Hebrew he needs for that ceremony. That ceremony is representative of becoming a man. That painting is a reminder that his greatest fear is growing up.

I know a lot of other subscribers have mentioned that the line "they all float down here" can be interpreted as the bodies of the dead floating in the sewer waters, which is true, and as you saw, bodies literally floating, suspended in mid-air, but also, if memory serves, King does write that Pennywise intends it to mean "floating" in the Deadlights. One of my fave quotes - again, if memory serves: "She was now with It, alive yet not alive. Now the mind of her was with It, in It, beyond the end of the Macroverse. She was in Its eye, she was in Its mind. She swam, floating in the Deadlights."

For the new version, I love Eddie. Ben is a close second. Such a sweetie, poor guy. I think the hair and blood for Beverly is supposed to be fear of puberty and her body changing so that her icky dad is paying more attention to her. So gross. The leper is disgusting. The new version is more heartbreaking for Bill because in the original version he knows that his brother is dead but in this one he's left desperately hoping he'll find him. One thing I do like better about the original and the book is that they make it clearer that the kids belief is what gives them power against IT. If IT is a werewolf then silver bullets work against him. If the kid thinks his asthma inhaler is like acid against IT then it burns him. In the new version the weapon Bill uses is empty but it works anyway because Bill believes it will and Ben's magic kiss works for the same reason, but they don't really make that clear. It's such a cool concept, especially for children using their imagination to beat such a terrifying creature. Can't wait for the second vid on each!

Interesting facts about IT: In Chapter One (2017) (1) Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie) was the first one out of all the kids to work with Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise). During their scene, Grazer would cry and gag while Skarsgård was right in his face yelling and drooling. Skarsgård was genuinely concerned for Grazer and after the scene ended, asked him if he was okay. Grazer looked right at him and said, "Love what you're doing with the character!" Skarsgård was left confused and impressed at Grazer's attitude, calling the child actors "little professionals." (2) Bill Skarsgård wanted to make sure that his performance as Pennywise was convincing to audiences. He states, "In order for this movie to be as effective as the book and the series, I have to scare a whole generation. My take was that Pennywise functions very simply. Nothing much is going on in terms of what he's thinking - he's animalistic and instinctive." (3) Bill Skarsgård actually was able to smile in such a weird way that it really intrigued the director and now it is Pennywise's iconic smile. Skarsgård had originally developed the smile when he was a child and was trying to scare his brothers.

More Stephen King; Cujo, The Dead Zone, Cat's Eye, Christine, Stand By Me, Sometimes They Come Back, Gerald's Game. This new It adaptation is okay but I prefer the TV version.

As an AVID King fan since I was a child, with IT being my all-time favorite novel, I totally prefer this remake. It adheres more to the plot of the book and explores elements that couldn't be explored on television, and the characterizations of the main cast feel much more faithful. Also, Bill Skarsgård brings a whole new level of terror to Pennywise! Tim Curry is the ultimate, but Skarsgård is in his own lane-that man is phenomenal in this role!

@@donnybuoy he has no character beyond "oooh creepy clown", even his design focuses too much on being creepy. He is tryhard creepy, and tryhard anything always fails at its actual goal. Whereas tim curry's pennywise is actually designed to look like an unassuming clown that you could hire to work a birthday party. He also has actual character, he clearly takes great pleasure in scaring the children; its evident everytime he is on screen or when he talks to the kids. He sounds like he is having the time of his life whereas skarsgard sounds like he is just trying to be creepy. Unassuming characters who clearly take great pleasure in the torment they inflict are always creepier than characters that solely exist to try and creep you out

i hope yall eventually watch sharp objects for a tv show reaction. it has both sophia lillis (beverly) and amy adams who plays her when she's older and is the main character. it's not action packed or comedic but it's incredible and has a murder mystery sort of feel. plus hopefully if you likesharp objects you'll be interested in big little lies which is almost as good (imo, different strokes)

I love both the original IT and the remake... also loved the book. I can never choose my favorite though. The original over time has become so much more comedic to me all the way through it. The remake I do believe gets a more closer resemblance of Pennywise in the book. Tim Curry is a bit more of a "clown" per se, while Skarsgard I think gets the more awkward personality of Pennywise where he's trying so hard to appear human.

The one thing the miniseries did better than this film imo, is ironically the friendship between the seven kids. In the former, the friendship feels a lot more genuine. Like I believe each of them would do anything for each other no matter who it is. The 2017 Losers Club feels cliquey.

The miniseries also did pennywise better. Skarsgards performance is just a guy trying to be creepy and it actually negates any actual creepiness the movie could have had. Tim curry actually gave pennywise character beyond "oooh creepy clown" which actually made pennywise a much creepier character
