Is an engineering degree worth it? Most people pay to get an "engineering degree", but the degree is totally worthless. Good news, there are things you can do to add value in the long term. I explain in this video
Is engineering worth it? That's a different question.

For a majority of graduates, that's correct. Skills and confidence in your skills are king. With enough resilience you can get extremely far. If you go in with a mentality of your grades/school being a carte-blanche for career advancement, people won't trust you. And when people don't trust you (and you haven't yet demonstrated wizard-like skills) ... Mr(s) Engineer, guess what will happen.

I agree that a degree can only get you so far. Applications of knowledge, experience, and skill are what really matter in the long run. Unfortunately, those can only be attained through hard work and dedication. Organizations don't care if you have a degree; they care if you can solve their problem.

Also in school you don't really have the time to full understand something, you only do the bare minimum understanding to pass or ace your classes, and even acing a class doesn't mean you have a good grasp. You just manage to do well on the exam problems you were tested on. After you earn your degree you have to go back and review all your material from the beginning and leave no stone unturned in your understanding every little conceptual detail.

Student with high gpa doesnt think gpa matters lol Try putting a low gpa on your resume and see how many call backs you get. HR doesn't care about skills they dont even know what skills engineers should have.

I had many friends with low GPAs, they wouldn't include it on their resumes and still got internships/jobs. But yeah ideally try to get above 3.0 to be safe, but skills are still more important

@@alithedazzling 3.0 is the mean engineering gpa at my school. so low would be below average aka a sub 3.0. I know students who admit to hating engineering they study hard have a greater than 3.0 gpa and never did a side project in their life and still get internships. One guy I know plays guitar in his free time and got an internship at Google. He is only in engineering for the money he told me he hates coding. Music is his passion . While my sub 3.0 friends that are passionate about engineering don't get internships. I have abandoned my spare engineering project working on stm32 microcontrollers for my drone project in order to raise my GPA since I've learned that's all that matters.

Nope. I like the line of thinking and I would like to agree. Here is the flaw: your cover letter and resume will usually be pre-screened by people who A) don't understand the actual job duties and requirements and B) don't want to expend any more effort than they have to. Everyone involved has other things they need to do too. When a manager in a corporation wants to fill a position, he will go to HR. HR personnel are not engineers. HR will want a checklist of items (a score card) from the manager. If you don't satisfy that score card sufficiently, the engineering manager will never hear your name let alone see your resume. It's not dumb, it's a time management issue. Unfortunately, many resumes will be sent in, yet the hiring manager will only want to talk to maybe 4 people. There will be more than 4 candidates with that degree. Source: I'm a key person in my company's current efforts to find a new engineering employee.

Hello Ali, I currently a 26 year old journeyman electrician. I think I have a pretty grip on electrical theory. Will my electrical background be beneficial in achieving a Batchelors’ in electrical engineering. Thank you in advance!

It will definitely help you yes, but remember that you're not expected to have a high level of theory in anything when entering an engineering degree. You will start with very simple things and build up as you go through the course. Just brush up on some mathematics, that was the most trouble for me during my degree but it can be easily overcome with a bit of hard work. Go for it man.

Yes being able to wire up something is always a plus. However Engineering is all about Science and I mean the same level of science understanding as a scientist. So only do it if youre down for understanding and APPLYING that theory at level ordinary ppl never come near

Click bait and cherry picking. You are misinforming your viewers to gain attention or you probably ran out of ideas. You choose to compare a highly skilled person (no degree) with a low skilled person (with degree)? That is two independent variables, a high schooler knows the difference Try comparing two equally skilled persons, one with and other without degree.

Appreciate the comment -- the goal of the video is to help students realize that just getting the degree won't save them in life. You need to get involved in projects, build skills, and put things on your resume that are worthwhile. The degree itself won't automatically land you a dream job, you need skills. Nonetheless I appreciate the feedback!

@@alithedazzling my apologies, in that regard i totally agree, from one engineer to the other, it is important to be clear on potentially ambiguous meanings. Your value in developed skills and experience is one of the most important factors I agree, but the video can be easily be wrongly interpreted
