@@Mkrabs I mean G.Play *Services*. It's a special app that many other (non-Google) apps use for location,... And without which they won't start. Yes, you can replace it with microG, but you don't want an unskilled user to accidentaly remove it. The point I want to make is that there are apps that you shouldn't be able to uninstall easily. And how are going to define this?

Also I prefer relevant ads that track you across the internet since for example when you use something spotify you don't wont just irrelevant ads that cant really be measured by your music style

One of the few things great about Brazil is our competition laws. Here we passed a law that let you to change your phone provider and keep your number, just after that prices dropped and the service got better. This laws could do the same for internet services.

Same here, just bought a low mid-range phone (that is better than the flagship from 6 years ago that I kept for all that time), now I will not upgrade until I absolutely have to.

No, EU has been sleeping last 25 years in Internet regulation. Now they wake up and want to apply some rules according to European standards and culture... So there will be more coming soon.

Too less. They can easily provide updates for as long as the device isn't too old. Look at custom rom developers doing this.

It's much harder for Qualcomm and OEMs develop software for like 10 different chipsets than for Apple to do it for 1. Could they do better? Sure, and they should. But it's not like Apple is actually doing so much more work than other brands, they just sell fewer models

The key word is MIGHT. Mostly it will not. If Google doesn't force the manufacturers to update their phones regularly for 4 years, with the clause of removing their Android license if they don't everything will be just an empty promise like the ones we're listening since treble and seamless updates.

The EU regulation is also meant to prevent "gatekeepers" from using their data to release competing products against smaller enterpreneurs who sell on their platform, ie. Amazon is (hopefully) to be forbidden from lazily stealing other's ideas. This move is sure to be healthy for start-ups.

It's not actually 4 years of Android updates, it's 4 Android versions (which Qualcomm for some sketchy reason includes the version the phone ships with as 1 version) So in reality 3 Android version updates, which is what Google, Samsung and Oneplus already guarantee. I suppose it at least puts pressure on the likes of LG, Sony and Motorola to provide 3 Android OS updates. So in reality an OEM like Samsung is just giving 1 more Android version OS update, because they already support their flagships with 4 years of security updates

i usually keep my phone for at least 4 years and i actually wouldn't mind paying a one off fee for android up dates when my samsung updates stop which my note 9 has apart for security updates which it still gets at least give us the option.

Till date only Samsung uses its own Exynos processors so it doesn't hurt to provide additional year of support. Though use of Exynos outside of Samsung may change in the future. Also this mostly only applies for flagship phones. Soc manufacturer like mediatek can follow the same path if they desire.

The major problem with Android (and the reason I switched to getting iPhones) is the lack of updates. Every other OS gets regular updates, and for good reason. 1) regular updates means that if a bug is introduced, it will get fixed in a short period of time. I once had a Motorola phone that got 2 updates in the 2 years I had the phone. The first update broke my Home Screen, causing it to crash a couple times a day, and forcing me to constantly reset my phone. The 2nd fixed the issue but broke my ability to connect to WiFi. 2) Updates allow companies to fix vulnerabilities in the software so hackers can’t take advantage of them. Google not taking control of the Android updating process is a massive cyber security issue. Phones running 2, 3 or even 4+ year old OSes have countless vulnerabilities that have been patched in newer OSes.

People like to complain about how slow the EU is but EU is one of the few bodies in the world that actually is propagating pro privacy laws while all the other major governments have just given up. Look at the difference between how Zuckerberg was grilled in EU vs in US. In US, you could clearly see that the politicians were so out of touch and the low balling Zuck because he might have actually paid off a few of them beforehand.

They're setting the standard for global governance and i hope one day they'll further consolidate integration with local governments until we become one big confederation of states.

WTF does Google and their partners expect?!! Whenever you charge $1000 or $1000+ for a phone noone expects to turnaround after 2 years and be like well its useless now. 4 Years of updates is fine but what they should aim for is updates for the life of the device. Btw this will have a positive effect on the environment.

Phone manufacturer would just be lazy and simply disregard Qualcomm's update and not deliver android update to their phone because they want to sell newer phone, why bother with older phones

Windows updates are handled by Microsoft. They do the work to make sure it runs on all the different computers out there. Android outsourced this to phone makers, so they handle their updates themselves. This allows for better customization and optimization (e.g. Integrating custom camera features), but means updates are more messy

Because thats how companies who makes them want to do. It all starts with google taking longterm kernel then SoC vendors apply their low quality code on it, later on we have android hals which change every android update. There are some initiatives on adding support for various qcom SOC into Linux kernel and upstreaming it, it means such mobile devices can run standard Linux software stack instead of being lock to some old kernel and proprietary blobs inside system which might not work with X android version. PostmarketOS is Linux mobile operating system build on latest packages and it has community where people port standard latest linux kernel to their devices.

I have been defrauded by a store which was advertised to me by facebook. I am considering deleting my facebook account but I use messenger too much. It would be great to have a third party messenger app.

There is a misunderstanding you have about legislation. The law has to be general, non-specific, and abstract. So it can be applied in all situations. For more info consult your personal lawyer.

I don't think Samsung want to give 3years of update. I think I can conclude this if my note 9 doesn't get android 11 but note 10 lite does. Both these phone have the same processor though note 10 lite is newer
