🚍 Stripping a Skoolie to Skeleton: The First Step to a Dream Airbnb on Wheels! 🏠✨
We're embarking on an epic transformation journey, taking a bare-bones bus and meticulously removing the walls, ceiling, and the old, moldy fiberglass insulation. Our vision? To convert this former school bus into a dreamy tiny home and a unique Airbnb experience on wheels.
🛠️ The Deconstruction Revelation:
Tearing down a bus to its core is no small feat. It's a labor of love and grit. But why is this step so crucial?
Out with the Old: Removing old materials is essential to prevent mold and ensure a healthy living environment.
Inspection Opportunity: Stripping the bus allows us to inspect the frame for any hidden issues like rust or structural damage.
Customization Foundation: A clean slate means we can build and insulate according to the highest standards, making our skoolie not just a home, but a sanctuary.
🔧 Our Unique Approach:
This build is different. We're not just following the standard path; we're innovating from the ground up. The deconstruction is more intensive than we ever imagined, but it's the bedrock of our bespoke build, ensuring every inch of our skoolie is crafted with intention.
🤔 YOUR THOUGHTS MATTER:
We're on this journey together, and your insights are invaluable. Have questions about the deconstruction process? Curious about our plans for the build? Comment below, and let's engage in a meaningful exchange of ideas.

I’ve only recently come across your channel and I’m already obsessed! I watched the Van remodel recently before y’all sold it and now the bus build and I’m hooked!! The Van was absolutely beautiful so I can only imagine what you have in store for this bus, and I’m so glad you’re bringing us along for the ride! I love watching Van/rv/bus builds but Maria is so funny and such a joy to watch that it makes the videos that much better! Best of luck and safe travels 💛

Well first off, we are SO thankful and SO excited to have you here with us. KZfaq has been such a challenge for us the last year and we love making videos and sharing our process and just our life in general, but it's been difficult to juggle it with everything else. When we get messages and comments like yours it genuinely makes up for all of the challenges and frustrations of doing this stuff. So thank you ❤️ I also wish you could have seen her face when I read this comment to her. She was all smiles and I'm certain you've made her day. She is SO FUNNY both in real life and in these videos. We've got a lot of building to do and I hope we get to see you each week while we're getting it put together!

Look at these two get after this bus and take it apart. It's like they've done this a time or two or three before or something. And look how well they work together, watching out for each other's eyes and stuff. This build is going to be epic, can just feel how fantastic this new project is going to turn out. Wonder what the final time line will be and how much it ends up costing? Whatever it is, it'll be worth the watch. Let's giterdone!!

After we started this bus, we were quickly reminded just how much work a bus build is compared to a van. The demolition alone is three weeks worth of possible build time.

Thanks Tammy! We’ll bring her into a video soon. She had a rough last two weeks and we’ve been making sure she’s not around the bus while we’re removing all of the metal and flooring with mold. When we’re on safer parts of the build she’ll be in a lot more videos.

This is a new bus! Our original bus was a Thomas MVP front engine. This is an International RE300.

What did you look for in choosing your bus, i.e. make, model, year, engine type, transmission.

Hey friend! There's no super strict list we follow with buses, but there are some things we try to avoid when considering a bus. To start with our deal breakers: Rust Belt/North Eastern buses (rust is normal on buses, many of these buses however are just eaten by rust beyond salvage) Cat C7 engines (high failure rates due to HEUI systems) AT545 transmissions (worst allison transmission ever produced, bad for buses) Buses newer than model year 2005 (restrictive emissions systems, engine failures due to those components, DEF) Ford 6.0L Diesel engines on short buses (catastrophic engine failures are what 6.0L are known for) Blue Bird Buses, this is just an us thing. Blue Bird buses rivet the wall and ceiling panels during manufacturing which makes proper deconstruction of them an absolute nightmare. Things we tend to look for: Southern or Southwestern buses, they just tend to be better maintained and less rust. High roof Thomas or International buses, more headroom and internals are installed with screws, not rivets. DT444 (this is the same as the Ford 7.3L and my favorite diesel engine of all time) and DT466 (very reliable 7.6L inline 6 diesel engine) engines are awesome! We had great luck with the CAT 3126 engine, but they require obsessive maintenance to keep operating well and the Mercedes MBE906 are great engines, but any maintenance on it will be super expensive. If you can find an Activity bus they'll usually have Allison MD3066 transmissions, which has the 6th gear unlock and geared for highway travel. Otherwise, we won't really consider anything other than the MD3060, which is manufacture locked to 5th gear, but is unlockable for 6th once approved by the manufacturer (we had this approved for our Thomas Bus) Our first bus was front engine and we didn't mind at all, but our newest bus is rear engine and the difference is incomparable. For larger buses, we'd consider nothing else bus Rear engine. While driving, it's super quiet, the ride is smoother, but we also have air suspension, and the power feels instantaneous. Our Front engine bus was so noisy we couldn't talk, but was also rather front heavy and the power was never punchy. Long post, but I hope it gives you some stuff to go on. Feel free to ask anything else we LOVE sharing.

The thumbnails to your last two videos had to be done by Photoshop, as the buses shown in them are neither the ones you are converting.

We’re trying something new, that we’ve seen is working for several of our friends, with our thumbnails while still being true to the nature of the video episodes, a bus demolition and Skoolie buildout. Trying to make them more visually available on the search function and up next.
