The blimp isn’t cheap. That one takes a ground crew of 9 to launch and recover it, not counting the crew people that were on the night shifts that watch the blimp when on the ground, a mechanic and 2 pilots. Also it has a cruise speed of around 35kts, and it takes a lot of preflight time for weather since it is flown to all locations. Flying an approach is much more difficult than an airplane as I have done both. Also at the end of that approach you have to have the crew catch the lines to put it back on the mast. I have over 7000 hours flying blimps over a 9 year career.

I was fortunate enough to ride on a blimp one time. The wild thing to me was landing. They twisted the big wheel to pitch it nose down, but that doesn’t make it lose altitude. Then they power up the engines to push it down. Such a weird sensation, leaned forward 15-20 degrees, barely moving with the engines blasting away.

I’m glad crews still like showing people their office. I got to fly on a 787 a few weeks ago, my first time on one. When we were deplaning, I asked an FA if I there was any chance I could see the flight deck. I had this whole impassioned speech ready about why I wanted to and I’d be quick, etc. but he was immediately like “Absolutely! Come with me! What’s your name? I’ll introduce you to the pilot!” Pilot was also super happy to tell me about the aircraft and take pictures. It was great fun.

The only thing I would say in Beast's defense when talking about "how big" a plane is, it's probably more referring to the available space. For example, if you got off a standard 747 then got in one where all the seats were stripped out it would feel huge comparatively. Especially if the rows of seats were replaced with rooms. I'm sure I would slip up my wording on that.

@@taffycat5049 Don't about justifying it, but the some folks want as much leg room as possible, but when it comes to air I just want maybe enough room to stretch on top of what you mentioned with as much privacy as possible. Kelsey, here's a cute pilot story for you. This happened long before 911 when it was common for the door to the flight deck to be open and often one of the pilots would actually be standing at the entrance to welcome passengers aboard (I know, different times). My ex wifes's parents lived on an island in BC with a lot of artsy crafty folks. One older woman liked to make hobby horses for kids. She'd take a well worn stick of driftwood and create a stuffed, sometimes emroidered horse, or unicorn head and sll them for cheap as she just liked making kids smile. My own kids had one and they loved it. Anyway, she had to fly from Vancouver to Toronto to visit her grandchildren and decided to bring a hobby horse she had made as carry on. No problem getting through security but the head flight attendant said it couldn't go on the plane because it was dangerous. One of the pilots saw this and took custody of the toy and told the woman to see him after they landed. On landing the woman met the pilot and he handed over the handcrafted toy. He told her he had strapped it into the jumpseat in the cockpit, it had a wonderful view during the flight and the flight crew enjoyed having it along on the flight. Thar's the kind of badass pilot I want flying me.

Back in the mid-1980s when I was a magazine editor, I went on what was really a press junket on a chartered British Airways Concorde. At the time, the airlines that flew the Concorde were trying to overcome local objections to the noise the plane generated by doing charters with travel clubs: You’d take the QEII to England, do fun stuff for a couple of weeks, then come back to New York on the Concorde. Since lots of people deplaned in NY, they would have empty seats for the continuing flight to Atlanta or wherever, and they’d invite travel and business writers to come along for the NY to ATL leg (or wherever they were going.) This was a fascinating experience; we were invited to go up to the extremely sleek cockpit and interview the pilots. I remember asking the pilot what he liked best about flying the Concorde; his answer was “being home in time for dinner.”

6:42 I like the idea of a sleeper coach airplane. Just make it all stacked bunks and have a spaces to get up and stretch your legs occasionally. Suitable for overnight flights. They could limit hand luggage and overhead storage and restrict cabin luggage to a night bag provided by the airline. Possibly during the day the bunks could rotate together and convert into seats. i.e. the whole triple bunk rotates on an axis and folds into seats.

Flying a blimp is a much different animal than flying a plane. Blimps are different in that you need to measure your trajectory carefully in consideration of current conditions to ensure a safe landing. Wind shifts can be a hazard. A plane comes in on a certain glide path with a certain air speed, flaps and corrects with a crab if its windy. I wouldn’t ride a blimp in a storm! Nice vid Kelsey👍

You really got my mind wondering with those cockpit visiting stories. I used to do something similar on fast ships between Estonia and Finland, asking to go on the bridge that is. As a grown-up I have been on some regional flights with jetstream js32 small turboprop that had open or actually no cocpit door and I sat in the first row, so I enjoyed it very much. I hope I can one day see the cockpit A380 or 747 in-flight. I have thousands of hours on the PMDG 747-400 in MSFS X so I would really like to see how its really done. I once dreamed about being a pilot, even trained on FNPT II/MCC Piper Seneca V simulator in Estonian Flight Academy. I have even some videos about it on my channel. The trainee asked what I would like to do and as I was familiar with flight-siming, I asked them to teach me something useful, so we actually did some stall recovery training. IT WAS SO COOL! I wish I could fly planes a job.

As a kid I used to love going to the cockpit. My dad was Navy and when we were stationed in Italy, we would take the C130 mac flights. That was the best because those guys would let us kids stay up on the deck almost the whole flight. I got to actually sit in the chair and move the plane under the captains instructions. Feeling the feedback from the hydraulics was a rush. Still in love with flying to this day.

I basically follow drone channels but somehow KZfaq thought I would appreciate your videos and they do not disappoint at all... Keep up the great work but if you ever have time to go on a blimp ride I would love to hear more about the technical side if you could interview a pilot... I know that you said how slow they travel but I can't imagine flying something as aerodynamic as a rock or landing it with a cross-wind. Keep up the great work!

I am reminded of nice lady some decades ago who wanted to fly around the world. It seems Pan Am furnished a jetliner and painted her name on it. They scheduled the flight to fill in for various common carrier hops, and the special passenger paid her own fare to fly coach. She never got off the plane, and eventually arrived back at her starting point. She was very thrilled by her experience.

I remember in the early 90s. I would have been about 5 years old. I got to go in the cockpit. And the pilots got me to press certain buttons/switches. I have no idea what they were. But just remember pressing one and feeling the plane almost immediately. It's unfortunate kids can't do this anymore. I was fortunate to do it several times on Qantas flights.
