In this video I dust off over a decade of rust when it comes to photographing families! I recently did mini sessions for families in my neighborhood. I’ll walk you through my thought process, my location scouting, the gear I used for these, the lighting, and finally how I quickly edited the photos in Lightroom. If you have any questions just hit me up in the comment section!
I see that I forgot to add some EXIF data to these photos. I was shooting at ISO 100 and I ranged from f 3.6 to f4.5 and my shutter speed was usually in the range of 100th to 250th of a second.
My virtual tip jar!

@3:50.....Zack, I said it before you!: a 12x12' silk overhead, and you can use the same location- with families staggered, scheduled 30min. apart. THAT makes it worthwhile. Same set, no muss/no fuss, and only "the talent" changes every 30min. Make it "a production line", purposefully. (Don't forget the sandbags....because anytime you're around water, you've got big wind.) DON'T forget your roots Zack......HUSTLING. THAT'S what got you to where you are. PERIOD. Every great photographer is a hustler. And a SURVIVOR. YOU have it in YOU. And you have an abundance of both. Yes, re: SHOOTPROOF; I'm interested in learning more. Also, You as a longtime Photo Mechanic user....your insights. Lastly, your car: I've considered the same for gear hauling. Your thoughts? (like, will it take a set of Manfrotto PoleCats and a roll of seamless?) THX for all you do!

If I would have had 10 families a day I would have given more thought to the 12x12. As it stood I had three days of shooting with 2, 3, then 5 families for the last day. Setting up a 12x12 to shoot 2 families would have been too much and I would have hated myself for taking on this project. I had to find the balance of professional quality and easy logistics. And yes... I would have need ALL of the sandbags. Also note I would not have been able to pull up to the shooting area. I would have had to carry it all a few hundred yards back and forth. As for the Scion. It’s an awesome gear car! It holds so much stuff and you can fit a roll of 9’ seamless in it. I’ve done it many many times.

Great video for photogs in areas that still permit commercial photography outdoors. Here in Eastern PA, a COVID hot spot, the governor declared photography a non essential business that must close their physical locations. While an outdoor shoot may still be possible under the order (the order closed physical business locations), there is also real social pressure out there to avoid carrying on with business as usual, despite the financial hit to the photographers. I had discussions yesterday with a potential commercial client, but are postponing until after the quarantine is lifted. The liability risk of lawsuits should someone get sick or die, despite the best social distancing measures, is real and could destroy a business.

Nice to see you keeping your skills and your brain busy Zack. In the UK the Police aren’t allowing us to congregate in parks other than for exercise - as too many people were abusing the social distancing rules. Long may your fun remain. I can see you took every step seriously in the process and enjoyed it too. Thanks for another video. Made the start of my last day of holiday fun. Back to being a nurse tomorrow. I’d much rather be an unemployed photographer at the moment than an employed nurse. Still I’m fortunate for the family that I have work. I’ve been using my Fuji wide 300 instax film camera only over the past two weeks and have not enjoyed picking up my digital cameras at all. Looking forward to more videos. Take care

And NO - they aren't too long because they are INTERESTING and engaging. If you aren't liking seeing people not hang with it past a certain time, make us go click another video for part 2. I am game if that gets it done. Zack - thank you - I don't come at your work for the how to and wanting to be a pro photog, I simply come at your videos for the mindset and inspiration. Awesome, Zack! I was wondering about going to people’s house to shoot them in the beginning of quarentine here in Rio, but was think more about a Nan Goldin style... wich of course never happened because I wouldn’t be the one offering to go to anyone’s house! Hahahah the “door” (windows would also could be so beautiful...) idea is very nice though... anyway, I really enjoyed your solution. Nothing better than a session in a little more wide and controlled place with some scouting and preparation. It’s been more than a month at home, only going out for buying stuff, and I miss going out so much! Really like the new place as well... got a nice lighting, less distraction... I like it. Thanks for the video Zach. Do you compensate the green cast from the grass with the magenta tint slider?
@ZackAriasATL
@ZackAriasATL 4 жыл бұрын
The green wasn’t giving me too much of an issue so I didn’t need to fuss with it. That has happened before and yes, I’d typically go to the tint slider first and then HSL or calibration if I needed to tweak it more. The fill flash here helped take care of that issue.

Great idea and sessions! Been thinking about something like this myself, as you say the ol bank account is looking a little scary :-) Just wondering what the families actually received for the session fee? I.E. A specific number of files? Or maybe a charge for additional files over a cretin number? Love the B&W, If it was up to me I'd just do B&W but most want a little color too. Thanks for the video.

Super fun video Zack. Thanks for taking us along with you on the shoots. Have you ever tried hooking up one of the Midi controllers to lightroom? I assume Meg has a couple lying around the house and they would be easy to get to. Having a controller makes it a little faster and way more fun to use the develop module when you're just turning nobs instead of using the mouse/trackpad. The Midi2Lr lightroom plugin is free and you can customize it however you want. Just a thought. Again, thanks again for the video.

@@ZackAriasATL I just wanted to apologize for any discomfort my comment gave. I had no idea and feel like I seriously stuck my foot in my mouth. Thank you for how graciously you handled my remark.

Great practical video Zack! Thank you! I would say maybe they were sitting to close to the white background? I feel like there was some light "bleeding"...or how is it called. How do you chose your focal length - aperture to make sure everyone is sharp? Just by trying? Sometimes I feel like the screen on the back of the camera tricks me because it's to small.

They were closer to the background than I wanted but I did that because they needed to be in the shadow of the background. The sun was still high enough that it was hitting the top of my subjects’ heads and I didn’t like that. That’s why you see that additional scrim clamped to the top. I was getting a bit of bleed from that background light but it was acceptable to me for what I was doing. Good eye catching that!

I found f4 for groups was good enough. I focused in the middle of the group and that held up really well as far as focus goes.
