Remember kids.....photography is self-therapy, so if you want to get "better", you have to get "on the couch". AND SHOOT. Let the pixel beasts out. FREE the Creative. This video was so Heisler-ish. Been following Greg since the 1980's and his lighting philosophy. I believe what we all share is that knowing light and "the rules" is vitally important- because it also allows us to break them when needed. There's reality, and then there's "cool"....

Dude, that’s a really good idea to toss a hard light and soft light together from the same direction. Never seen that done! That totally sells the “setting sun through the blinds” look with that cool soft fill. Thanks for sharing. This is going in my brain light database.
@ZackAriasATL

I’m trying to remember the name of the photographer I first learned part of this technique from. He shoots a lot of sportraits. His technique involves chasing a grid with a soft light. It’s a great look.

I like the casual nature of your videos, going through your thoughts and decisions you make. I remember the hard light with soft light photo from your Instagram. Nice to know the thought process that goes behind it. As far as the name goes: Show & Tell is good, but I also like the wordplay titles mentioned by others as well.

This is so cool. I'm not a photographer I'm a painter who has been in a 25 year rut. 😆 So I started doing landscape photography ... and like all landscape photographers I chase the light and blame nature and the weather for my failures! 😉 This was enlightening ... pun not really intended but I'll take it! Making your own light! I love the examples you got of the dappled light in your kitchen. And it was cool to see you replicate it with studio lights and stuff. I always considered studio/portrait lighting kind of boring so I have ignored it. I don't have any studio lights but I'm a pretty good DIYer. This process is what I am familiar with from painting. Creating stuff that you can see in your minds eye. Time for me to make so terrible photographs! 😂

That hard light with a soft fill was something I discovered on a shoot one day, and I used to use it a lot. You reminded me of this and how much I love doing it. Great BTS video and I really like how you started from inside your car. It was interesting how you started from the light source inside your house to find inspiration to create that picture. It is great to see your thinking process BTS and how you manipulated the lights source. I like at the end when you talked about this is work in progress. As they say, if you want something different, then you must change things! Also, a very cool way of using lights in line with each other to create that effect. I will have to try that! Somebody told me long time ago that you and I were very much alike, I think I see it now, LOL. I moved to San Francisco many years ago. I was getting a lot of inspiration from the "american look", as I like to call it; buildings, cars, corner liquor stores, ... all that crap. It was ok for a while. But I got fed up of working with strobes all the time. Then i discovered an NYC photographer that worked a lot with natural light and I transpolated that approach to my location. Oh boy!!! I discovered my light! That light that you could spend the rest of your life shooting in. The light that came through my widows, the refection on glass doors, the mix of hard lines with glowy chewy softness, the warmth of the sunset light in the Pacific Ocean ... Man, ideas were flowing, I was shooting all the time, a true happy camper. Then shit hit the fan and I had to move back to my city back in Spain. No more "american look" to inspire me. No more magic light. All gone. I tried to replicate the light, nah, not the same quality of light, the magic is gone ... I felt so close to give up so many times. But there is something inside of me that still resist to it. I need to keep trying. Therapy continues with Dr. Arias, LOL. Thanks man!

Dude, you’re like the voice in my head. I’ve got the technical. I can get the shot the client wants. And I can do it quickly. But that all conspires to keep me in my safe box. I started shooting more personal work over the winter but it all seemed to be in my studio. So, again, I’m in a rut. And now we’re quarantining so I can’t get out. And now I’m whining. Ha. Oh well, I’m going to make a concerted effort, once everyone is cool with socializing again, to do more personal environmental shoots.
