This series is the best weightlifting content on KZfaq right now. As for this video: I PB'd in squat jerk today! I usually just do it to warm up my shoulders before moving on to split jerk, but felt like pushing it today.

I was going to be so pissed if you didn't hit that man. Maybe a press out by official judging standards, but I think in basically any reasonable person's eye's that's a clean lift, great job, for perspective that's like putting a fridge overhead. It was so satisfying to see you finally hit that.

If mobility is equalized then I don't see why it would be any different than strict press vs. snatch-grip press

@@alexkbeck shoulder strength wide grip off the back vs narrow out of rack, I think would make a difference. I think the sotts press would be stronger for most.

I’m new to weightlifting and right from the start I feel much more comfortable and strong in a squat jerk than a split jerk. Is there any reason for me to not keep training the squat jerk and switch to split jerk or should I just go with the squat?

I have a theory. If you don’t have the mobility to do that warmup press using your ulnar nerves(pinky and ring fingers/knuckles), of course the movement isn’t going to work well for you. You’re trying to do something that requires a closed kinetic chain with an open one. You’re trying to manipulate huge weight overhead with almost exclusively your median and radial nerve. In other words trying to stabilize something with a 2 legged stool.

stretch your lats and triceps. there should be no weight at all on your actual wrists at any point of the front rack. it should all be in the shoulders
