In the past, I've discussed how trading quests and seeking out information can shape areas in a Zelda game. For Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, Hidemaro Fujibayashi and his team chose to implement their incredible new ideas and mechanics around this philosophy in an effort to channel the original Zelda. The result is a wildly entertaining, challenging, puzzling, and ultimately enjoyable couple of games that don't get the attention they deserve. They're not perfect, but they represent a leap of faith for the developers, and for the rest of the series.

Unfortunately, I think it might have had to do with releasing so late on the GBC. Because imo they're much better as a whole than LA. Nintendo, for some reason, really doesn't want to acknowledge the Capcom games, but I've wanted these remade for going on a decade.

Too many people saw Capcom and not Nintendo and figured " not my zelda". Unfortunately that's ignorant, but one day those people will pick it up and realize just how damn wrong they were. If it shows up on NSO one day and it gets millions of plays then it might have a shot.

Funny story about Oracle of Ages, considering one of the main NPCs is named Ralph, and that is also my legal name. So imagine being me at the ripe age of 8, naming my character as "Ralph" only to be have all scenes with the NPC becoming obnoxiously difficult to understand which Ralph they're referring to.

@@Jack_MxM I have a different opinion. The original GB also used anime artstyle in the beginning and the end as well as the snes iteration (in the booklet at least).The game graphics were due to technical limitations though and the style they chose for the LA remake is a mere callback to those graphics but with a twist. I don’t think it is supposed to represent anything lore wise it is just an artistic way to transfer LA into a truthful modern interpretation.

21:09 "Eagle's Tower focuses on knocking down 4 pillars in the center, so you can ascend to the upper floors." I think that description is selling the dungeon a bit short. The cool part is that once you break the pillars, the entire upper half of the dungeon crashes down into the lower half, replacing a huge chunk of one floor with another floor. That's what always stood out to me about it.

I never found any "creative fatigue" in Oracle of Ages. In fact, the dungeons in ages seem much, much better than those in Seasons. Many puzzles were just brilliant. In seasons everything was "kill stuff to open door, repeat". I am exaggerating but not by a lot.
@chazon1780
@chazon1780 3 жыл бұрын
I think that was deliberate, actually. Oracle of Seasons emphasized combat while Ages focused on puzzles. Considering Din in Seasons is named after the Goddess of Power and Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom, it makes sense.

@@chazon1780 Absolutely. I like oracles of seasons, it's fun in its own way. But I think the guy said that ages had creative problems in dungeons and to me that's an absolute "wtf" that forces me to question the entire video. @@Alfonso88279 "what else could he get wrong?" the part about music. Highly subjective obviously, but that's not how it was portrayed in the video. @Alfonso88279
@Alfonso88279 3 жыл бұрын
@@TooAwesomeToDie7331 That part about the music baffled me too. The thing is, he talks about it as if it was a fact, when it's more his taste. I love this kind of reviews when they differentiate between what it is and what they feel about it. I am not sure he makes a good work at that. And that's pretty much the point for me, the interest, that's what I respect the most about this genre of videos. If you state how something makes you feel, that's great, interesting, cool. When you put that as the Truth, then I'll probably have a problem with you sooner or later. The game is not perfect by a lot, but his criticism didn't touch most of the real problems the games have, that's all.

@@Alfonso88279 the biggest problems i find with oracles are the rng from the rings and the test your luck rooms, pacing issues in the overworld where mini-games are mandatory, fail based stealth missions, and unnecessary plot barriers, especially in seasons which is more about exploration. also, one trend capcom does with all of the games they worked on is the lack of i-frames when taking damage from enemies.

These games got me into the Zelda series when I was in third grade. But Not because of the games themselves. If anyone remembers scholastic book fairs, there was one year sometime around 2002-2003 where they sold an Oracle of Ages and Seasons choose your own adventure book (I swear I'm the only one who had these because I've NEVER seen them mentioned on the internet). I thought the main character's name was Zelda and was obsessed with getting those books. They worked as a guide as well, even had a page dedicated to the trading quest going through what Link traded to who. I did eventually get to borrow one of the games from my friend but never actually beat it. But I've been a huge Zelda fan since

I... can't agree regarding dungeon design. Honestly, did we play the same games? It's like you looked at it and came to the exact opposite conclusion. Oracle of Ages' dungeons are complicated and fucking rad, they remind me of Majora's Mask. Absolutely incredible designs, where you'd mess with the whole dungeons and affect things within it. Like, they unarguably have themes and unique identities in them, it's kind of why they're so beloved among those who have played them... Edit: Like the dungeon you have to deal with in the past AND present to complete both halves. Or the dungeon where you have to manipulate four different crystals to move between the different floors of sand. Or the one where it's the four elements, and you have to beat each elemental trial to get the necessary keys to proceed to the final areas. Or a DUPLICATE VERSION OF THE WATER DUNGEON where you have to raise and lower the jabu jabu's water levels! Or the one where you have to cool certain areas of lava to get around, and switch-hook things onto certain places.

I know right? It's almost as if he hates them solely for not being "focused mostly on combat" like the dungeons in Seasons were. Seriously, the most complex puzzles you ever needed to think about in Seasons were just platforming challenges the rest were either one room wonders or "enter room, kill all enemies, rinse and repeat", which implies significantly more "creative fatigue" than the devious brilliance that was the puzzles in Ages' dungeons.

@@MrOuenben Had it been finished, the originally proposed idea was for the Courage game to be pretty mucha direct remake of the Original LoZ for NES with the director’s design philosophy, and would have focused on exploration and narrative the way Seasons/Power focused on combat and execution challenges and Ages/Wisdom focused on mindbending puzzles. But they figured out pretty early that creating a password system that worked to link 3 games would have been a logistical nightmare on the Gameboy Color, and since that was kinda the entire point, they just took some of the ideas they had for that third game and shuffled them into Seasons and Ages. Happened early enough in development that if they wanted to complete the trilogy now, they’d need to just make a new game from scratch in the same engine they used for remaking the others…which I’d love to see.

I loved these games. They were a lot of fun and memorable. Oracle of seasons i liked the most. The seasons and the Subrosians were awesome. Oracle of ages was amazing, but I always got stuck on the Goron ridge like the NPCs weren't responding to anything. I thought it was a glitch, but also I could've done something wrong too

The Tarm Ruins... I remember being 10 and wondering what was behind those gates, and after beating the game I would go back there and wander around aimlessly listening to the music. You totally got me with your love letter to the Ruins. Thanks for making this video and showcasing them to the world.

another excellent retrospective, and definitely the best ive ever seen someone articulate what really makes these games feel different from links awakening. ive played through all three multiple times but had never really been able to put my finger on just how much more demanding the oracle games are on your memory/spatial aptitude...they really are special in how much closer they get to the original zelda, especially compared to every other handheld game in the series

These games are hands down my favorite Zelda titles. I would beat them every summer, sometimes again and again, since the linked quest can continue on to the Triforce quest. Did you know there's not one, but at least two references to these games in Undertale? There's a chasm a blue chicken takes you across very strenuously, and a table with "A powerful-looking bracelet" on it, before revealing "Oh, it's just a croissant." There's a reason these games are so beloved by its fans, and it's no coincidence that BOTW is such a hit with its director coming from them. It's only a shame that Nintendo doesn't give them any recognition.

Memories you just unlocked: 1. I was OBSESSED with the Goron Dance Hall in Oracle of Ages. I would start up my Gameboy JUST to play it over and over. 2. mOOOOOOSH. I loved that dude. 3. I would make up lil dances by jumping onto the tree stumps in Oracle of Seasons and landing on different sides of it. It was a lot of dumb fun haha 4. Turning my volume all the way down whenever I had to use that godforsaken magnetic tool :,)

The Oracle games hold a hefty dose of nostalgia in my book. Seasons had the best dungeons and bosses whereas Ages had the best story and characters. We can only hope that Nintendo and Grezzo are remaking them on Switch as we speak right now

I knew I heard your voice before and damn am I glad to have watched the entire video. I adore these games and hope that they are remade or at least in a 2D collection for Zelda's anniversary. They are what made me fall in love with the series, together with Majora's Mask. But I couldn't play it consistently at home because I didn't have a N64 back then and only a GBC. Damn, the memories, My stupidity not realising that I could jump down the chimney to get the shovel before the 2nd Dungeon in Seasons... And the excitement when I got Ages for Christmas after putting Seasons in the back-burner because of that block. Finished Ages before I found a gaming magazine a cousin had with the solution to it. Still love both games to bits.

The 6th, 7th and 8th dungeon in both Seasons and Ages are masterclass examples of dungeons in the zelda series. I have always dreamt of them being redone and with Link's Awakening I truly hope they finally get brought into the modern age.

I found a strategy guide for these games lying on a table at an after-school centre in my childhood. Everyone had already left and I was the last one there so I just took it home with me. In hindsight that was kind of, uh... theft. I didn't consider that at the time, and now I regret it, but it did give me the opportunity to experience these games, albeit entirely through text. Still have it, I think.
