What does a zero clearance insert do for your saw? A zero clearance inserts helps make cleaner cuts and keeps you safer by preventing small pieces of wood from getting jammed in the dust collection. I'll be trying the FastCap zero clearance tape on my miter saw in this video to see how it works. I have a zero clearance insert for my Delta 36-725 table saw. They help prevent small pieces from flying back at you. So zero clearance inserts help make a saw safer. A zero clearance throat plate also helps prevent splintering and wood chipping when cutting. I actually think the zero clearance tape works well on the miter saw. I would not recommend the zero clearance tape for the table saw because it is thick enough to create an un square cut. These are great woodworking tips and tricks I wish I had learned about sooner. Amazon affiliate links below. Thanks for that information. I am new to woodworking and had no idea what was meant by "zero clearance." Now I know, and it makes perfect sense. I honestly had never given thought to the small pieces falling down into the saw because I haven't had any issues thus far. However, I can understand how it could become a problem. Thanks again.

Hey Matt, I have the same Delta table saw. Would love it if you would do a "tune-up" video on what you do to adjust your saw to make sure the blade is a perfect 90 to the slots, fence is a perfect 90 to the blade and the riving knife is in line. I just made a zero clearance insert for my new Ridgid table saw. I glued 2 pieces of 1/4" walnut ply scraps together, traced the original insert, cut it out with a jig saw (too lazy to set up Shopsmith band saw), and used a disk sander to sand to the lines until it fit, I marked where the leveling screws were on the original. I drilled holes in those 6 locations and then threaded 5/16 - 18 set screws into the holes. It was amazing how easy they tread in without using a tap. Walnut inserts look nice. I have made zero clearance inserts for my old DeWalt 12" chop saw using 1/4" plywood. Seems to work OK, but I think I like the tape option better.

I couldn’t find a zero clearance insert for my little table saw, so I used that exact sane tape, flipped my my factory insert over, and taped it to the bottom. (so it wouldn’t be a spot for wood to snag if I’d placed it in top) Works great so far, but I haven’t had to bevel anything yet. I used another one from the pack on my miter saw, so I guess I’ve got three replacements for when I tear it up using bevels.

@@731Woodworks absolutely, brother! My wife and I just bought our first home, we wanted to tables and dressers to match without having to spend a stupid amount of $... so I’ve decided that I will make them! I know I’ll make mistakes along the way, but I’ve already earned a lot from your videos. It might open a whole new “noob series” of you showing others how you use your tools, but I could understand not wanting to take that liability on :P I figured a good first project for me would be to make a workbench/miter stand that I like (and has tool storage) :)

I just made my own insert for my table saw using 1/4" MDF. Even if you have a very shallow support depth on the saw table, it is relatively easy to route out a ledge to a proper depth, then shim back up with masking tape as needed. (Subtext: Just buy a trim router. You won't regret it.)

Informative. Would have like to have seen the tape used on the table saw anyway. Just to see how bad it really sticks up. I would like to see a video on making some stools, like bar stools for the kitchen. Using 2x4's ripped to 2x2's for the legs, and then 1.5" dowels for the cross piece. Quick question I have been using a zero clearance insert on my old table saw trying to clean up my cuts... figured out this weekend that somehow the fence on my table saw has a small bow in the middle, not much, maybe a 1/16th" but it's enough to really make a mess when trying to do joinery of the pieces I was milling out. Anybody have any ideas? My temporary solution is clamping my 4' aluminum level at each end of the fence to bypass running the wood next to the warped fence.

Is there any reason that tape couldn't be used on a table saw?

It raises up off the table so it would cause your cuts to be off. Also might cause your stock to stick when pushing through the saw and cause kickback

I’ve had success removing the insert and placing the tape in the underside of it.

Man, the info is nice, but jump cuts every other word is annoying. I probably would subscribe but that's distracting. Way over used here! Use the sparingly.
