Hey all! Just an FYI since I've gotten plenty of questions on it: - I never run the dishwasher with my cast iron and wooden items. I use it as a dishrack to dry things to save space! So don't worry (: - All items used are linked in the description in the case you want more details

Not only does this way of living help the environment, but its also, to me, very aesthetically pleasing. Just something about not having any plastic around makes everything beautiful.

I hated tasting the detergent on my glasses when I washed them so I switched to classic white neutral soaps that I buy in big bulks because I also use them to clean my fresh tattoos (I divide them of course) . Never had the taste problem again and it's so much cheaper!

Sadly, my parents are not convinced about the “ zero waste living” I am trying to do my best for the planet but it’s really hard when you have people taking care of the whole household. I still try to do things like not buy unnecessary items and I also buy used things like books or dvds. My city also has neighborhood cleanups that I usually participate in. It is still really hard to contain a zero waste and minimal lifestyle as a teen but I hope when I am older I can take better care of the planet and do my best to make a difference in the world.

All my Lodge cast iron pieces I got from either my grandmother or at thrift stores. My reversible griddle that grills or does pancakes, veggie burgers is a great multi use tool. One need only wash cast iron with hot soapy water, rinse with hot water and dry well, to keep the seasoning intact. If needed simply take a wee bit of vegetable oil and wipe the inside of the cast iron and then turn upside down in a hot oven for 10-15 minutes to re-season. A friend grew loofah 'squash' from hanging baskets and gave me a couple which I cut up to use as scrubbers. Does the stainless steel chain scrubber ever get any rust? The Kishu Charcoal for a pitcher is something I will gift a friend.

I really appreciate your advice re caring for cast iron, Beth. I got one...a frying pan... from my mother and used it only once because I have no confidence that the oil coating is okay after washing and rinsing...in HOT water. Great tip. I thought I had to do the whole oil thing all over again after each use. I will be following your advice. Thank you.

Perfectionism is the death of productivity. Put them in the trash or better bring them to a recycling station in your town if you have one. Even though the movement is called „zero waste“ the goal should be waste reduction to a bearable minimum. You are already doing a lot by buying less unnecessary things. You worrying about how to dispose your bamboo toothbrush is wasted energy compared to millions still using plastic ones or people who don’t care at all and so on. A some point we all have to think about the point where we do stuff to feel morally superior in contrast to really making a difference.
@rebeccaentrekin444
@rebeccaentrekin444 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrizzlybearlol okay, but if someone is open to learning then you might as well educate them. If you put a bamboo toothbrush in a plastic bag and send it to a landfill then why even have a bamboo toothbrush? It's best to compost it. And why would you want to throw away a metal container? If it serves no purpose to you anymore you should give it to someone else.

Naeema Abdullahi thank you! I want sure if that was alright!:))
@chrizzlybearlol
@chrizzlybearlol 4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Entrekin as I said put them in the trash or bring them to a recycling station. It does not make sense for everyone to have a composter. It is another thing to maintain and with lacking commitment you produce just more trash by buying stuff you don’t use. I’m not assuming anything here but many in this community are just feeding their compulsory behaviour disorder without changing a lot. This is just not good for your mental health and is something to be called out for or at least be warned of.

I don’t know if it’s been said, but please don’t dry your cast iron in the dishwasher/ drying rack. Thats allowing water to stay and rust the skillet. Best to dry it by heating up the skillet on the stove or in the oven to remove all water molecules. Then to prevent any rusting till your next usage, rub a thin layer of canola oil all over and heating it up on the stove till smoking or in the oven to keep it seasoned. Aside from that, love the video!!

I would strongly recommend against buying second hand cast iron unless you know the person you are buying from. Cast iron items are often used to melt lead for hobbies like model making and such since cast iron has a higher melting point than lead. Once a pot has been used to melt lead it is NOT safe to use and could cause lead poisoning. The only way to know if an item is safe would be to seek out someone with an XRF machine which could be hard to find and/or expensive. This is one of the very few things I don't advise getting second hand since for most people there's no way to know if a pot is safe to use.
