Ever had such a great experience at a mechanic's shop that you wanted to tell everyone about it? I just did and I want to tell you about it...

Hey Marty, per your advice I just ran over to Bullfrog marine... Mark was watching your video when I walked in... I asked him how many ppl had came in today after watching your video, he smiled and said he was watching it as I came in.... In regards to the specialist Center, I had a lot of work done there. And it one point recommended your videos to the guy at the desk. So it's safe to say they too are aware of your video. Another awesome video thanks for the videos, tight lines! Eddie Hefner.

had a similar situation with some local car mechanics. we took my van to a mechanic that was cheaper than the rest and the people were nice and they talked a good game. but every time I got the van back, something would be wrong in the same area they were working on it. after the 3rd time we figured it's not just coincidence, went to another shop right across the intersection and never had a problem since. good honest people are hard to find...that's for sure.

Thanks for sharing, Marty ... great story and one that all of us can relate to ... Kudos to Mark at Bullfrog Creek Marine!! I took my '88 Toyota 4x4 in to a local mechanic for a leaking head gasket and got a $350 estimate ... 2 1/2 months and $1,100 later I finally got it back. Hang in there and best wishes to you!!

As a mechanic that is trying to grow my own business, I completely understand where you're coming from. The majority of the time I can make twice as much money by charging half the price as the dealers. I'd always recommend anyone to get second or third opinions when it comes to mechanics, but when you find a good one make sure you take care of them. A great mechanic just wants to figure out and fix a problem for you, not take your money, but they still deserve adequate compensation. Tight lines bud and good luck on your boat!

It's a good thing to promote honest mechanics. This way they get more business and they stick around so you can go back to them when needed. By the way... I saw a video the other day where people were fishing residential docks in the Bay Area and catching Grouper on 3 inch plus Pilchards and Pins. Free lining them right under the docks. It's combat fishing though and you need a little heavier tackle to get them out. Something for you to investigate during the slow winter fishing.

When I was running my Electrical Contracting business in So. Cal. I found an 'HONEST' mechanic that treated me better than well. My agreement was that I get my trucks back ASAP and when I had them delivered with my explanation of the problems…I wanted that fixed 'along with' anything else that he found that was or is going to cause me problems…on my part, don't call to check with me, just fix them like they were your own. That started a 15 year relationship that made me think we were actually brothers, when Christmas and Thanksgiving came around he always got a Turkey and a bottle of good booze. "Cherish your Friends…true friends are few and far in between!"

PS…Don't go down to the Islands until you have at least 3 long 'shake down 'cruises' under your helm! Sooooo many different things need attention. When you put the electrical system back in make sure to clean your engine block grounds like you did the battery cables. 'Salt water Murphy' is working on your boat 24/7 and don't forget all the sacrificial zincs on your tabs or somewhere else. Charlie

oooh…didn't think of that one…I suppose it's too much to ask them to balance on the stern and 'chum' that way. Perhaps…put a "dog litter box'' …might work if you test it now and perhaps 'salt' it with one of their own 'tootsie rolls'…try this…ask your following what they have done, this can't be too big of an obstacle. I had a separate pump for salt water wash-down of the decks…those pups know better, it'll be a dilemma for them either way.

Some people are just naturally mechanically inclined. And are good to know. Myself, if it has more than one moving part, my favorite wrench of choice is a hammer. So its best to call on a fixer-upper buddy. Here in the rural area, a good mechanic is easy to spot cause there'll be every parking spot taken up by a customer's vehicle. Not-so-good mechanics sell used cars to take up space.

Marty, still liking the videos, I think everyone has been screwed by a bad shop at least once. Maybe the $65 is a minimum shop rate, doesn't excuse the BS repair, I think they owe you $65 bucks, whatever, but now onto the motors. I personally "would not" repair the motors, they are old. Even if you do get them to turn over, and it appears that one of them won't because there is water in the crankcase, you shouldn't depend on them to get you home or anywhere for that matter. You keep talking about living on the boat some day, do your self a solid and replace the motors, $6,000 each is the going rate for new motors, especially now that you have made a good friend with the new mechanic. This way, you have just added another 15 plus years to the boat and you can depend on them to get you out and back in. Put up the "fundme" page and let it grow to the motor replacement fees you need, I think you'll be surprised how quick you have the money. This Spring could be the Florida Keys trip, and we know that you will post some great footage!!!!!

I bought a used boat and the gas gauge didn't work. The wife was afraid we would run out of gas. The boat needed a tune up and I asked the mechanic to look at the gas gauge. He said it was probably the sender and would cost too much to fix because he'd have to pull up the deck. I later found out it was wired to the instrument panel switch. Charged me and never attempted to troubleshoot the problem. Never went back.

Since those motors are seized up, why not not try a few experiments? Most of the time the rings are seized and not the bearings since the bearings have sat in oil. It's a build up of iron oxide/rust. Iron oxide in terms of pH is a base and generally speaking an "acid" of lower pH would help to neutralize it. I'll get to the point now... Try pulling the plugs and dump some vinegar down into the chambers. Vinegar is probably the safest for a watercraft but if you wanna kick it up a notch try some phosphoric acid which is the main ingredient in most rust removal formulas. Not a good idea for a usable motor but if they are shot then there is no loss. By the way, to neutralize the phosphoric acid just use baking soda. If it turns over and by some miracle you get them to fire, all that crud will just blow out the exhaust and I would recommend an oil change. Keep us informed and Thanks for entertaining us!

Great drive and chat. I know what you're saying about dishonest mechanics..just had a estimate handed to me after a oil change by a local garage..gave me the same $352 estimate with a rehearsed line of bs he gave 5 other women I talked to. You have to get your tie rod done soon..and this and that..actually there's nothing wrong with any of the tie rods on any of our cars..just a way to skim money off us girls. I did find a honest mechanic..think I'll just deal with him from now on. :)

Good message to send, there still are honest mechanics out there. Check out ETCG1 and his mechanic site - Eric the car guy..he has a wealth of info..and from there you could find his forum and probably get an answer right away. One of the reasons I wanted to mention this guy (I enjoy his frank and honest approach to mechanics), Mark may get inspiration and an hopefullystart his own site. Anyway, I enjoy your posts, keep-em coming.

Well think of it this way. It only cost you about 65 bucks to find out the specialty place has terrible customer service, probably not that honest and that they're not doing any extra work to make sure things operate as they should. It won't take long for this video to get back to them though so who knows they might all of a sudden be really nice now too you and want to help from fear of bad word getting around about them. Or just the opposite and just hate you now. Haha! But at least you did find a great place with an honest staff of mechanics so it wasn't a total loss. Peace out Marty I hope all is well, N8knox

Hey Marty! Just got my first yak. Sometimes it pulls left, then right, gets sluggish, then it goes right along... kinda like you do in your vids! If I bring my kayak's motor to your GOOD mechanic do you think he could take care of it? =^) btw usually a beer or two fixes it for a few hours, but any more than that the problem gets way out of hand. On second thought I think I'll leave things be. When my yak acts goofy it must need a beer!
