Clip Studio Paint is a digital art program built from the ground up for digital artists. It also has two features that are super nice: Vector layers and Reference layers, which I'll show you how to use.
You can get it for $50 at www.clipstudio.net/en, and it often goes on sale for less. (They didn't pay me to say this but I'll happily endorse them anyway. They're good.)

One thing he doesn't tell you about this is that in order to make the most of the vector line tool, you need to have a strong understanding of economy of line; your strokes need to be quick, strong, and decisive, you can't carefully drag the pen to make a clean line or chicken scratch the line in order to create the illusion of cleanliness. Otherwise, when you try to control the nodes, you get these leftover weird artifacts that kinda interfere with manipulating the paths. You'll spend a bit of time trying to get rid of them and then having to manipulate the leftovers into the lines you envisioned. Also, switching to vector smoothens out practically any textured brush or pen, so if you're looking for more organic looking strokes, I advise against using those in a vector layer; use only a G pen or Turnip.
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 6 жыл бұрын
You can tweak the settings a little to allow textured brushes to work fine (I demo this in the opening timelapse, actually). Issues with smoothing usually come from automatic post-correction which you can disable. But yes, line economy is always important, even when raster, but especially when using vector layers. (That's why I make use of the connect vector line tool as well, so other edits to strokes are more effective, say if I need to move a path or change its thickness)

I had been planning a long, exhaustive (to me especially, but also for anyone foolish enough to watch it) video extolling the virtues of Vector Layers in Clip Studio and you come along and describe it all brilliantly in about a tenth of the time. I use them even at the sketch stage because the erasing is so quick! Well done, sir. Now I can return to watching cat videos with a clear conscience.

the "don't draw over reference line" WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! Is there any way to stop it from painting the outside if you go over the line? It's kinda annoying. Also I can't find the option "stop filling at center line of vector" in pen settings, was it renamed?
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 5 жыл бұрын
For pens, the setting for both your questions is "Do not exceed line of reference layer" under "Anti-overflow" in the extended settings. When you turn that on, "fill up to vector path" becomes available. When drawing with that setting on with a pen or brush, make sure your size is a bit bigger htan what you need, and that: -The center of your brush doesn't cross over the vector line -The line completely cuts through from one side to the other of your fill area below your brush. If there's a gap in the vector, or your brush goes around a corner of the vector path, that'll cause it to spill over to the other side. It's worth noting that this all works different for brushes than it does fills as well. You may want to tweak with 'area scaling' if you're getting pixel gaps or if it's going too far.

That comes from trying to fill on the vector layer. Vector layers can only handle lines. Make sure the vector layer is set to 'reference,' make a new layer below it, and set the fill tool to "Multiple referring: reference layer" it'll use the data from the reference layer to alter the fills on the selected layer.

Have you tried out csp's animation tools? I am currently using flash mx 7 and is thinking about upgrading my tools. I am really interested in tv paint but its crazy expensibe. Is csp a good cheaper alternative to the industry standard tools?
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 6 жыл бұрын
I've tried it out a little bit. CSP is definitely more targeted at drawing and art quality but it can be used for doing animations. It's structured similar to traditional animation, and you'll need the EX version if you want to do more than 24 frames at a time. My friend The Other Half (nsfw) uses it for his animations, he does 100% frame by frame. However he TV Paint is probably the better choice. CSP however goes on sale often and I'd still recommend it massively for 2D art, so if you can get it on sale, the Pro version is $25 and you can try out the animation tools in that.

You can't create vector type work in PS. It's strictly raster type work. Personally, I think illustrating is a lot easier and more intuitive once you figure everything out in CSP. I hated using PS for illustration. It's great for photo manipulation, but illustration was such a pain. There was too much set up and process to make coloring easier. I feel there's more ways to manipulate the brushes in CSP, so it reacts to how you draw a lot better if that makes sense. It took me a while to figure out a workflow in CSP, there is a learning curve, but it's a lot better and so much cheaper! I use illustrator for logo and design work too. Honestly, unless you plan to do screen printing of your illustration, I wouldn't make it in there. It's a massive pain in the butt and feels so unnatural.

It's always been called Clip Studio Paint Pro. Pro is just the version. There's Debut, Pro, and EX, this tutorial applies to Pro and EX. You cannot fill color on a vector layer. Make sure the vector layer is set to a reference layer, make a raster layer below it, and then in the tool options, go to the bucket tool and if you don't see the reference options, click the wrench icon and go to the "Reference" section of the tool.

Troubleshooting: -Make sure you have the lineart layer set to "reference" mode. It's the lighthouse toggle. -Make sure the fill tool you're using is set to "Fill up to reference layer," or "Multiple Referring" includes the lighthouse option. You may want to enable "Fill up to vector path" too. -Make sure you're painting on a layer other than your reference / lineart layer. If it still overflows, try turning up the "close gap" setting, or look at your lineart closely to try and find any gaps where things may bleed out.

@zedrin New sub here :), I had a question about Vector layers and im hoping you can help :). Ok so I'm use to using raster layers. I will combine them if the line art works with new layers and there's little to no problem. Though the moment I tried to do the same with Vector layers it basically had smudges and smears on the new layer. Why is that? And is there a way to combine Vector layers that won't result in a similar outcome ?
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 3 жыл бұрын
what kind of brushes are you using for vector layers? Vector layers are supposed to be extremely explicit. You can use the object select tool to see if there are any lines causing the smudges and where they're coming from. For instance, if you're using an invisible brush to erase, instead of an eraser, that's actually just making an invisible line that can smudge things rather than erasing. You'll be able to find it if you use an object tool.

Yes! Cliip Studio has animation, and if you're on EX there's no limit to how long they can be. Animating in CSP is a tutorial in of itself, but in animation folders you can assign vector layers to frames just as you can with raster layers (just there's no hotkey to do it automatically, you have to manually link each layer after making it). If you set an animation folder to the reference layer, instead of individual layers, it'll only reference the currently active layer, which is incredibly useful. Switching layers will simultaneously switch your place on the timeline to when that layer is active. Vector layers are often used in production just cause making edits to existing lineart for transitions and in betweens has no distortion, unlike with raster layers.

There's a few things to check: 1- Make sure your pen pressure is good. Make sure you can draw a clean stroke with a normal pressure curve. Sometimes if you're using the wrong tablet setting in CSP, it'll result in broken pen pressure. You can change this from preferences and switching between WinTab and Tablet PC modes (requires a program restart sometimes.) 2- Make sure when you draw lines, that you're not going too slow. You wanna find the sweet spot of as fast as you can while feasibly maintaining control. Confident strokes will have less jag and bump to them, and will be more even.
