For the record, CSP is planning some questionable plans for future payment models. There has been a lot of protest on this topic. Hence why I can't make recommendations about what version of the program to get anymore. However, existing licenses will remain valid even IF they go through with their stupid plan shift, and thus this tutorial is still valid. But also, CSP's asinine payment model isn't what this video is about. If you're here to complain about that to someone unaffiliated with CSP, consider the alternative: don't.

Maybe because many animators are leaning towards animation models which is hot right now and thus why CPS thinks they should add such features to a paint program. As you said, stupid plan.

@@TheLuconic what? Their plans are for a subscription model, and are also offering a perpetual-but-not-really license. The animation features have been a thing for CSP long before then though and have been pretty solid.

@@imonly1man_ I think you've been with adobe for so long that you just don't know how to recognize a raw deal. That and them being super shifty and unclear about it, coupled with a few other severe changes was the issue. E.g. in version 2.0+, be it on a sub model or permanent license, if you lose network access you have roughly 3 days to get internet to verify your install before you get locked out. Used to be 1 day. For the record, Adobe has a limit of 30 days on this.

I know animation basics but always used to do a hair rippingly tedious animation style of using Windows GIF Animator where I would have to draw every frame individually in a seperate program, import them into that program, then fiddle with each individual image to get the playback time ect i want. Other tutorials for this assume you're a super pro animator and use lots of terminology derived from other animation programs that a person that animates a bit TOO traditionally ( as windows gif animator is essentially like a digital flip book ) LOL might not know. This is a great tutorial that made even a slow learner like me feel like I actually knew what I was doing, thank you so much for this! You're golden!

Hey Zedrin, after doing animation for so long (and great work btw), have you ever had any regrets or considering changing careers out of animation? I suppose the core of my question is really how you stay motivated to pick up the stylus everyday consistently for so long without getting burnt out or tired of doing it
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
I switched to animation because of burnout in my other studies tbh. Burnout is a very real thing still, but I studied mechanical engineering in college and did just art and animation on the side. The only thing I have regret over is actually fully going through with my engineering degree that's now just collecting dust, instead of studying something that'd actually synergize with what I really wanted to do.

@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
Do you mean how I figured it out? It's something that every other animation program can also handle. Containing an animation within another animation is known as 'nesting'--an easy example with tweens is if you want a ball to bounce across the screen. Nest the animation of the ball bounce (with easing), and then animate the entire nest across the screen (linearly). You can also nest keyframe animation in CSP with other keyframes, using folders (think of folders like a peg/parenting hierarchy) but I believe it has to all be the same type of elements present. (This would work with the ball bounce example) As far as nesting animation FOLDERS (like, say you do a walkcycle frame by frame and want the char to move across the screen), just do the folder animation as you wish, the enable keyframes for the folder. In the timeline, there's a dropdown button so you can still edit cel order and timing while tweening, but do note you can't actually edit the cels themselves until you turn off keyframing. The data is saved, so once you reenable keyframes, they'll come back on. If the animation is incredibly 'contained,' you can also try using file objects for it instead. Make an animation, then import its .clip file into another project as a Movie file, and it'll animate as a single item. Sorta like a symbol in Flash.

Are there any specific tips you could give for animating to an already existing audio source, such as voices or music? I'm kind of new to trying to animate, and watched your old tutorial and it helped me understand animating a ton. 😁 I already love this one too, but just wondered if there's any particular tips/tricks that could help with that sort of setup, since I'd love to animate to a beat of sort, while the animation still remains smooth. 🤔
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
ah right, i forgot to mention how to include that. If you go to File > Import, you can import an audio track. CSP doesn't have audio scrubbing unfortunately so you'll have to just replay the animation a few times over the parts you wanna sync, but that's doable.

Ok just to clarify: if I have Pro, and want to use this feature for displaying and exporting alternative outfits like you demonstrated, I am still only limited to 24 frames right? So, I can make 24 drawings, as long as each drawing is 1fps?
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
you can make 24 drawings with any FPS. When you're only doing outfits, fps doesn't matter, since you won't be exporting as a gif or movie. (Image sequences are just images and don't have an FPS, since you specify that in the program you load them into)

@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
To go in order: -Make sure the paint bucket tool is set to 'refer to reference layer' only. You can't color fills in vector layers; they're only for lines in CSP. -To duplicate something, the easiest way to is duplicate the layer or group itself (r-click > duplicate layer), then right click the timeline where you want it to appear and select the new, duplicated layer. I'd recommend binding duplicate layer to a keybind. Don't forget you can also use groups for cels in place of individual layers. This can allow you to get a more typical drawing approach that you're used to, which can help bridge you over into using other techniques and you get more used to how CSP's animation tools work.

@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
If you have the lineart visible, make sure you set it or its parent folder to 'reference' mode using the lighthouse button on the layer panel. For the fill tool, make sure it's set up to use 'reference mode' and to refer to the reference layer. You may want to make a duplicate tool specifically for reference mode. If using vector lines, you may also want to toggle on 'fill up to vector path' and 'include vector path.' I also recommend disabling antialiasing.

@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
make sure to check your paint bucket settings. You should set them up to only refer to the reference layer. Use area scaling if you're using raster lineart, or "fill up to Vector Line" if using vectors. I'd recommend making separate copies of the tool for both options.

When I’m animating in CSP, when I play the animation the quality of the individual frames drops significantly. But will return to normal when I pause. Is there a way to fix this so there’s consistent quality? I’m creating sprites for a game, so it’s kinda important to make sure all of the frames play together smoothly, and properly.
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 9 ай бұрын
Under Animation > Playback Settings, you can choose Prefer Speed or Prefer Quality. If things are choppy, use Prefer Speed, while if there's artifacting using Prefer Quality. Generally I prefer speed as artifacting isn't a big deal for previews, since I want to examine the motion during playback, not the individual frame quality. ( I can do manual scrubbing for that.)

I hate when artists say more frames does not mean better animation, yes low framerate can look better than high but that low framerate had alot more effort per frame than the high in that situation, or there are simply mistakes in the higher framerate piece, but if equal effort is applied per frame higher framerate allows for increased detail and options which, scaling with how detailed the piece is, will increase the quality of the animation. It's a balance, more frames means more work and if you either don't want to or aren't capable (deadlines/ability) then use a lower framerate, but if you are willing to put in the effort and have the time to do so, especially if you aren't making a fairly simplistic animation, then it will result in a better final product, to a point, obviously animating beyond 60fps is almost certainly more effort than it could possibly be worth, and even then 60 fps is probably excessive most of the time but 60fps is generally used as a baseline for clear smooth motion, mostly in video games, but going up to 40-50fps from 24-30fps will allow more clarity in motion and generally translates to a better final product. People often point to professional animation from massive companies still using the cinematic 24fps but that is just the minimum they can produce something that looks professional, more frames=more money and companies always prioritise profits. Again I'm not saying lower fps=bad I just hate when people say something has no real benefit when it's more situational. I've seen some surprisingly good looking sub 10fps that use smearing etc very effectively to give the appearance of smoothness.
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
Your post can be summarized in significantly less words by "spending 5x as long on an animation tends to lead to a bit of a quality improvement if done right" which is general true of anything artistically. More time *should* lead to better quality.
@ComfyCherry
@ComfyCherry Жыл бұрын
@@Zedrinbot I wanted to emphasise that it was a balance of effort and returned value from said effort. I feel your summary simplifies it too much and adds a random and arbitrary number, making it seem that it is always that proportion more work, as this is the internet and people tend to constantly, and often intentionally, misunderstand what others say I like to say things as clearly as possible whilst being somewhat concise. My comment was also, somewhat, a rant as I'd seen higher framerate being dismissed as completely useless/pointless countless times by countless animators/artist and felt the need to say something.
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot Жыл бұрын
@@ComfyCherry sure, but for my vid i said that you want your frames to be deliberate. The amount of frames you use should be the amount that you need; if you WANT to do 60 fps, then animate 60fps, but it has to be a design consideration from the start. The problem is a lot of people think higher framerates means smoother animation, which it doesn't--the animation has to be smooth long before you drastically increase your in-betweens. 60 fps can make it more obvious how smooth it is, but also if the motions are artificial looking or aren't smooth, 60 fps will make that more apparent. But it's also worth warning that there are significant diminishing returns as you increase framerate, even if done right, which often make it less worthwhile depending on the project. It's why most 60fps animations are done via tweening and puppets, as they can avoid some of the drawbacks.
@ComfyCherry
@ComfyCherry Жыл бұрын
@@Zedrinbot I already covered the fact that there are diminishing returns in my original coment specifically including the facts that 60fps is likely excessive for most animations and that higher framerate is less impactful with simpler animations
