Made in 1989 the Zoom 9002 was £349 and the idea was that you clipped the device to you guitar belt. An idea that never caught on.
The guitar sound on Headlong has alway alluded me until hearing the Brian May experimented with Zoom devices. The unit has preset for Chinese Torture also
The Zoom also has a rechargeable battery

I owned one of these through 1991-1993. It was actually my live rig in a power duo back in the day. This demo is not indicative of the versatility of this fine little box. It's clean sounds were great too, and R & B stuff and pop sounded real good through it. It was a real reliable piece of gear too; as a career musician, I was impressed with its portability, versatility, and for the times, quality of sound.

I have 2 of these. 1 is the original that I purchased. It was possibly one of the very first units sold in the USA. The 2nd is a mint unit purchased from E lectronics. Both have been refurbed. Wonderful units.

So nice to see ZOOM 9002 again....I had the same one exactly 30 years ago....It was amazing and sofisticated and easy for operation. Great design and perfect for many situations. Just not for heavy sounds like Metal. But I loved.....and I miss him so much. Long times....Good times. Thank you for make me remenber.

This effect was also on the 2020, 4040 and 8080 units, and I believe on the 9000. Zoom were obviously really keen on it back in the day.

Zoom is notorious for using same chips and processors in all their levels of gear. From their affordable lines to their pro lines. To save money on quality parts they order and manufacture in bulk. Which means that all components are interchangeable, the only difference you'll find in each device is quality in housing, options for EQ tweaking, and preset leveling. Some distortions are given a higher range of tone, some reverbs aren't given much depth. But when it comes back to the internal, all parts are high quality and manufactured in similar manner

Dweezil Zappa also uses it on the intro to FWAK (or F.W.A.K. as it's sometimes written). It's actually a great effect to run keyboards through.

I love these Zoom units! I had the 9000S black wedge with foot controller and power unit, and later had one of the 9002PRO’s. The effect on Headlong was called STEP, for Step Filter. It’s a common sound on many modern devices although called different things at times. I can get almost the exact sound on my Helix but it lacks the analog drive and EQ circuits that gave the Zoom gear their unmistakable tonality. These were also used on Brian’s “Back To The Light” album (the end of Love Token, for example), on David Lee Roth’s “Your Filthy Little Mouth” album, on Petra’s “Unseen Power “ album, and Richie Sambora used it all over Bon Jovi’s “Keep The Faith” album

You'd mount the thing on the strap behind you - not in front, and you'd operate it using the remote :)

The little late 90s zoom 505 guitar multieffect had some of those presets and some pretty decent brian may type of sounds, great little cheap device you may find one for about 40 or 50 quid, they would break easily tho

Had one , i liked the clean with chorus. This and a fostex x28 four track , i was a king Battery cost a fortune i remember. Then again i stole the thing from a pawn shop after i found out the owner ripped me off on a previous deal . It was Pay back time.

It sounds like a cocked wah and a little phaser or chorus added. The other sounds like harmonizer or something.

I got one when they came out the sounds where ok but it wasn,t easy to use on stage I can't beleave it got to production but there you are

John Hanna yes I kind of have to agree with you. I think the idea of having it on your strap sounded good but didn’t work very well in practice. That’s why they went out of production as quickly as they came in making them quite a hard to get a hold of now

Have you considered investing in a fender cyber twin amplifier? They’re a bit pricey, but for your money you get a lot. Including a preset that is literally the sound for Bohemian Rhapsody.
