In this video I share a comparison between three popular single wall, single trekking pole ultralight tents, the Zpacks Plex Solo, Zpacks Hexamid Solo and Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. I go over the specs briefly and the setup for each, followed by a side by side comparison and the livable space for each.

Pleased to see a comparison of the 3 tents I've been most interested in. I've owned a Luna Solo for several years now. Exposure getting in and out isn't an issue, as you can unzip the nose as far as you like. Condensation is improved by making sure that the tent is angled forward enough to leave the mesh on the rear edge fully raised. I found no need to seam seal it either. The main drawback is the deformation of the tent under even a modest wind. This is because they've put the tie outs on the ends, not the rear wall, like on the Z-Packs tents. I sewed some tie outs on similar positions to the Z-Packs tents and now it's about as good as you can get for a tarp-tent. I swapped out all of the fittings and guys with 1mm Dyneema cord. For pegs, I use 3g aluminium crossbow bolts with the tips cut off, which I leave permanently attached to the tent! For a pole, I bought some lightweight aluminium sections and cut to length. It's all dialled in now, and less than 700g WITH poles and pegs, so Z-Packs will have to wait several years until this one wears out!

The Lunar Solo is a solid tent. I've been very happy with it over the years, but it's tough for me to go back to a non-DCF tent. The lightweight is nice and I have found the additional fabric benefits to be worth it. For me anyway. Happy to hear you've had a great experience with the Six Moon Designs tent too and glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching Bobby.

It's probably been mentioned before, but you mention element protection when getting in and out with inclement weather with the Lunar Solo. The doors are designed such that the doors can stay zipped, however the bottom can be slid up the guy line which gives you all the same protection and allows you to vary the exposure of the front vestibule height. So the one complaint you had really isn't the case. I'd say that looking at the Deschutes Tarp and Serenity Net Tent shelter combo, or even the Gatewood Cape and Serenity Net Tent shelter combo given that you're okay with true single person shelters, and both of these options offer a bathtub floor AND what amounts to a double-wall shelter would be appropriate and li,Ely closer competators (though both would be double walled where none of the options you show here are).

@@sk-wx1cf I dont remember brushing the side or being short on interior room. I wake up early, I love to sit up and cook some coffee and chill in my tent. Legs out, ass in the tent cooking is very comfortable, or laying down on your side, wind is controlled also, just really nice. On my channel I have a video on the solo and all my trips show me messing around in it. What sold me was this one video I saw where this guy was going through a hell storm and cooking lunch, totally dry...sold. Also easy to set up anywhere also, like on the side of a mountain, with maybe not the perfect pitch but totally usable.

What a great comparison. I only wish the tarptent Aeon was part of the party. As i am 6 fewt tall and it was nice when you showed the space between your quilt and the goot end of the wall.

@matjobin 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joeseph! Tarptent makes some awesome shelters. I've heard a lot of great things about the Aeon and have a few hiker friends that own one and love it. The strut and bulky packed size from it were two things that didn't appeal to me. I'd say 6 feet tall would be the max for the tents in the video. For 6+ or if more room is desired, I would consider the Altaplex (exact tent as the Plex Solo but for taller hikers) or Duplex XL.

I just got back from an overnight with the lunar solo, I had it set up in backyard to dry. Came across your video and thought the size you gave seemed big. I went out to measure. Maybe that’s the outside dimensions. The interior hangs a good bit under fly. Interior with a good bathtub is 36ish on ends and maybe 48 in center just wanted to throw that out there.

Great review Mat! Would be nice to cut back the weight with the Hexamid and Plex Solo and like the price of the Six Moon Designs but really like the room my Duplex has and not sure I want to give that up. With an added cloths line inside, the Duplex is 19.55 oz but it's very expensive. Thankfully I received it as a gift.

Thanks PT'L! The Duplex is a really nice tent and just as great of an option as the tents in this video. The two pole requirement is something that would keep me from getting one at this point in the evolution of my hiking, so no clothesline for me. All of that room is nice!

Nice comparison I didn't realize plex-solo has 7" more entry hight over plexi-mid. This is huge for me since I really dislike having to slither in and out of a low door. I also prefer plex-solo with no ridge pole for easier packing.

Thanks Kevin! Tarptent makes some really nice tents. The strut and lack of packability from it were drawbacks for me. Great video, just more validation that the Lunar Solo is best value, being 6’2 the Zpack tents just have too many issues, the door dropping to the ground, the amnt of stakes, needed, and mainly the prices, etc .. all my personal opinion based on using these tents, i also prefer the GG The One, to me it’s a better design while only weighing 17oz, I do always appreciate the comparison videos so thank you.

Thanks Lance. The Lunar Solo is definitely a great value. Everything has its benefits and drawbacks. At 5'10" I've been happy with my Dyneema tents, but I have my gripes too. There isn't one perfect shelter in my opinion, though some come close. Price is always tough to initially accept, but you get what you pay for in terms of lightweight, material properties/performance, cost of material and cost of labor. I purchased and used a GG DCF One tent throughout much of last year. It's a great tent, well designed and I enjoyed it a lot, but I still prefer a tarp or a single trekking pole tent in most cases.

A big thing I noticed with condensation is that there's a lot less if your groundsheet covers the whole area covered by the fly rather than just the floor.

Hey Mat, I just subscribed. Thanks for this comparison. I would like to see how small these tents pack down (especially the plex solo). I’ve used a duplex for a few years and like it. Still, I want to cut weight. Backpack space is also important to me. So, how much room do these take up in the pack?
@matjobin
@matjobin Жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing Wandering Monk and welcome to the channel! Sorry for the delay. I never got notification of your comment and am just getting it now. Pack space can be very important, especially with a smaller pack involved. The smallest of the three in this video when packed would be the SMD Lunar Solo. I've been able to stuff it into a 2.5 liter STS ultra-sil stuff sack. Out of the two Z-packs tents in this video, the next would be the Hexamid (at around 4 liters) and finally the Plex Solo (around 5 liters). Along with the increased bulk of Dyneema when packed, I also don't stuff my Dyneema tents like I do will sit-poly. There's some debate on the topic but I like to fold and roll my Dyneema shelters in effort to give it the longest value and lifespan possible.

@techguy9023 What mid are you using? I've been very happy with my Zpacks shelters and haven't had any trouble with them. They've been solid. A little more care is required, but that comes with the territory of going light and due to the material. Lots of other great options out there though, so even if these aren't for everyone there will still be something out there that works.

This was on a section of the New England Trail in CT. Thanks! I mostly use just a tarp, but out of these tents I’ve been using the Plex Solo since it is newer so that I can see how it performs in varying conditions. Out of the three tents in this video, the Hexamid Solo is still my favorite.

Did half the PCT with the Hexamid Solo Tent and a MLD bivy. Never had any rain on the tent sadly so I kinda stayed worried if it was going to hold up. Also I cowboyed overwhelmingly so I feel like I never perfected the pitch. Definitely learned that good tent stakes are an absolut must out west for the Hexamid. Pitching it on sand was a nightmare with shitty stakes. Which ones do you use? I am considering selling my bivy and buying the poncho groundsheet instead. Would you trust this setup for the CDT? So torn if it's worth the hassle over just bringing my Xmid Pro that I really liked on the second half of the PCT. Thanks for the video!
@matjobin
@matjobin Жыл бұрын
Congrats on your PCT thru Snfguy! The Hexamid performs well in the rain, but conditions are pretty different out there compared to the AT and east coast. Cowboy camping isn't as enjoyable in the buggy humid east compared to out west. I feel good stakes are important everywhere. I've been using a mix of Zpacks carbon fiber stakes and Ruta Locura Sorex stakes. They have good holding power, are light and don't pickup a lot of dirt/debris when removing them so they are easier to clean and pack up each morning. I've been very happy with them. For the sand I've always used rocks or deadman anchors (whether using the tent or a tarp). I don't use my bivy often, but when I do it has been nice to have some sanity with the bug pressure. You would be looking to use the poncho groundsheet with the Hexamid? I own an X-Mid but haven't used it much because I've been using tarps a lot more over the last couple of years. I haven't hiked much on the CDT yet, but I hope to thru in the near future. I would definitely go with a shelter I was comfortable with in varying conditions and something that is storm worthy. Weather can be harsh there compared to the PCT and even the AT. For me, I would also factor in when I would be starting. It sounds like the X-mid might be the way to go? Thanks for watching my video!

@@matjobin Thanks for your thoughtful reply and the congratulations. Yeah I would use the poncho groundsheet with the Hexamid. Thanks for the tent stakes recommendation. I have been happy with the groundhogs mini so far and used a groundhog regular for the Hexamid peak. They are not the lightest but I have broken so many of the Zpacks carbon fiber ones when stepping on them by mistake. I guess I will research further into the CDT, it won't be next year but since there's not much info on the Hexamid in really inclement weather I tought I'd shoot you a line. Thanks again!
@matjobin
@matjobin Жыл бұрын
@@wio2189 That poncho groundsheet Hexamid combo could be a good option then. I've heard mixed feedback on the trail about carbon stakes and have read a lot about them too, but mine are still going strong. The longer stake for the ridgeline of the Hexamid is a good idea. I've been using four of the regular MSR Groundhogs with my hammock tarp/setup for the last few years and they have worked well too. As for foul weather with the Hexamid, I've had it out under rainfall of 2-3" per hour some nights, 40-50 mph winds, thunderstorms and occasional snow. It performed really well in all of it. In the heavy rain, I like to lower the entire height of the tent to help prevent splash back if I'm in a handpicked site. I've also used my pack, groundsheet or an umbrella at times if it's been really bad too. It was a little unnerving the first couple of times, but after waking up the next morning without any issues I haven't worried about things in the tent since. The pitch direction helps along with campsite selection too. If you have any other questions about the tent, I'm happy to help.

I bought a Hexamid Solo years ago here in the U.K. I’m 5ft 8in and of average build. I was also the wrong side of middle aged even back then. It was expensive but I saved. You only buy it once. I’ve never wanted for another tent. I have knocked ice crystals from it, watched a thunderstorm through it and had the wind tearing at it on a Devon cliff top above the sea. I can erect it in next to no time. Familiarity makes that natural. The combination of the net sides and bathtub floor means air circulation creates little condensation. Plus you are endlessly smug watching reviews of so called ultralight one kilo tents! I have never even thought it was difficult to access. I’ve carried if hundreds of miles and it has been confidence inspiring at the end of each day. I don’t doubt the design has been refined and improved but only slightly. Mine still performs perfectly.
