Hey there! Thanks for all the reviews and updates with this issue! I believe the 7i problem lied with some bios/driver issue; the stuttering seems like the computer switching randomly between the iGPU and the dGPU. Now that you have thoroughly tested both , how do you see the screen size of the 14' to use without an additional monitor? I wanted to buy a P1 G6 as a mobile workstation, but saw that the thinkpads have a really serious issue with overheating :(, spent a whole night re-researching my options and ended up deciding between the slim5 14 (the 16' looks awfull honestly, although technically makes more sense lol), and the 7i; and I would 100% would go with the slim 5, but Im afraid that the screen might be too small for photoshop (i mainly do image editing). Also, how did you see the 7i performance while working on it? I barely game, so maybe your issue wouldnt affect me so much, since I can just manually switch to balanced/performance before gaming once or twice a month :v.

Thank you for the kind words. I personally don't use the 14" to edit video, I really rely on a monitor for that. I have used a P1, P16 and P17 and the P17 overheated initially. After a firmware update and setting it to performance via the Windows power settings, the issue was resolved. The 7i was fine for editing videos, and the model I used was the 2023 one. I'm sure the most recent release is fine and I just got a dud. In the end, I love the Slim 5 for its build and versatility, it's a little workhorse.

Great review! Thanks. I like setting the resistance on my current 'cheapo' chair to its lowest setting which allows me a rocking motion. Can this chair do that?

Sorry for the delay. The answer is sort of. You can rock in the chair, but there is a bit of resistance doing it! I always have it in a locked position, so maybe it will lose some of that resistance over time if I rock in it more. I'll test it out and let you know.

Lenovo laptops, especially the Thinkpad & Legion line are tops for me. I have a Gen5? Legion 7 (10750H/2070Super) and a Gen8 Legion 7 SLIM AMD (7840HS/4060) Different animals for sure. The Gen 5 will boost it's ass off (hard to keep cool thanks to the 10th gen Intel) The Gen8 is cool, calm and collected. It will run anything I've thrown at it even on silent mode it gets it done. Unplug it, and run it saver mode, it will get around 8hrs of YT. Both were about 1200 at the time of purchase. My next will be another Legion.

Almost every Lenovo laptop I've used has been excellent with the only disappointment being the 7i from last year. The Yogas are built really well and are super premium.

one year owning the legion 7i with the best specs, i totally agree with you that this is just not a good laptop and is not worth its price. Yea it looks good on paper but the laptop overheats just by browsing the web, or actually by just being open. Absolute nightmare what they have done. Sorry Lenovo but creating powerrful slim computers is not your thing, and if you need something that works better pay a bit more and go with a macbook pro.

While my experience with the Slim 7i wasn't great I have to say that the Slim 5 is excellent. It seems to be model and year dependent.

Just a quick update, the desk, chair, and arm still hold up! My wife and I use it up to 8 hours a day at different heights, and my kid still plays with the controller. Lenovo Vantage. I didn't need to do anything with toolkit for this laptop to perform. It's a great gaming laptop, you'll love it.

It really does just work. I tried about 9 laptops and this was the only one that actually did what it said without burning up or having some power issue or some sort of glitchy setup. Lenovo really finished this laptop where most laptops feel like unfinished products in one way or another.

Agreed. I've used a number of "incomplete" laptops over the years and at this point I was really surprised this laptop performed as well as it did. A lot of the time I think there is just too much tech under the hood or hardware incompatibilities cause problems.

Hey man, great video! I'm wondering what kind of battery life you can get out of this thing while gaming? Both with heavy AAA titles like the ones you showed, and lighter gaming.

Not much. I never play off battery but a couple of times I've forgotten to plug in when playing Destiny 2 on dedicated graphics. What I can say is that it runs really well without being plugged in, almost to the point that you don't notice. I've definitely played for around 30 minutes before the screen dimmed and it went into power saving. I do 45 minutes train rides with indie titles and I still have more than half my battery left. I'm sure I'd get more running on the iGPU.

The laptop does have an hdmi 2.1 port though, so if you were to connect to a gsync capable tv or external monitor via hdmi would it work? I guess I'm asking if the lack of gsync is strictly due to the diaplay panel, or if it's not available in the graphics card

It would work, it just isn't native Gsync. It doesn't make a difference to me though. Not saying Gsync is overrated, it just doesn't matter a whole lot to my gaming experience.

With that 14.5” screen - even if you run it at about 1080p resolution you will still have way higher PPI than running 4K on a 27” monitor. If you want to max out the FPS I would think turning down the resolution would potentially be the best option.

Absolutely. A lot of the games I'm playing run great at native resolution with DLSS on but going to 1080p doesn't impact the quality that much on a 14".

i had the slim 7 as well was a horror of issues with the display backlight failing three times the fan shorted out which led to thee laptop not turning on and it was a nightmare but lenovo was kind enough to offer me a refund and I got the gen 9 legion 7i which is going smoothly

I watched another review where they noted that it was very loud outside of quiet mode. And that balanced mode was not a middle sound level, but rather very loud. Can you give your opinion on this? Or any other users?

Balanced only sounds similar to Performance if the AI tickbox in Vantage is selected. That setting causes the fans to ramp up and down depending on what's happening in your game. I use balanced without AI most of the time.

I have the same monitor arm but tried adjusting the up and down tilt but the arm seems stuck regardless of the directrion I turn that arm adjustment screw - or + any suggestions would be appreciated thanks so much

The up and down tilt isn't very smooth but it does hold its place. Every now and then it becomes loose and I need to re-tighten it.

@@Payne. Thanks for your reply I did sort it out but like you said it doesn't hold it's place mine doesn't hold it's position at all and the screw is fully tight to the max and my spring just shoots back high up so I may go back to using the original g8 stock stand

The best laptop right now has a rtx 4080. You want to know why? 1. 12gb vram is needed at 1440p - 2000p at least. 2. The rtx 4080 laptop gpu runs at 60w, up to 175w, enough performance for any game. 3. The rtx 4080 laptop at 60w is so fast as the rtx 4060 at 100w, results in lower temps or noise if same performance is needed. Problem, the manufacturer doesnt put a rtx 4080 into the 14inch and also the thin aluminium 16 inch only has 4060 and 4070, 4080 would suit perfect to it. Only hope is the coming Lenovo Legion 7 Pro 16 inch (AMD) with a rtx 5080/5090 in a 100% aluminium chassis.

I got the slim 5 16 in . I did up grade to 32 gigs. Mine is a 240 volt . Even when game playing I only heard the fans a few times. I did encode an hour and a half movie in less than 8 minutes.

The fan is quite loud on the 14" even on balanced. Noise cancelling headphones help with that but I feel bad for the people around me.

So what settings did you have it on for the concert. I'm doing an indoor concert with colored off and on stage lighting. Can't seem to get it dialed in in past shows of granddon.

Everything was set to auto for the concert. After months of use I've found auto with my desired framerate is the best result. There is a lot of Google magic going on under the hood and while it's not perfect, it definitely is good enough.

Hi Payne. Great review. Thank you. I just received one myself. Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 AMD 14" RTX 4060 32gig 1tb. I find I have a whistling fan noise at low RPM's kind of like a small baby jet engine. Did you find that was the case with your review laptop. Thank you.

@@Payne. What happens. As soon as the fan kicks in no matter what mode right at the beginning you can hear a small faint whistle noise. Almost similar to a faint whistle noise you get in your nose at rare times lol. hmm maybe, anyways. If the fans need to go faster the noise goes away, and you hear clean fans running. But if they need to stay at their lowest RPM's then that noise just sticks around pretty much always. I talked to Lenovo and their more than happy to replace the laptop. So, I am doing some battery tests to see the efficiency at power saving mode and GPU off mode to see how I like it.

My 2017 Alienware OLED 13in touchscreen doesn't have burn in. Typing this comment on it now. Sept 2024 will mark 7 years with the laptop. In short I wouldn't worry about burn in.

No way of knowing really. I don't keep laptops for more than 3 years so it's not really a concern for me. I'd say stay away from OLED if that's your worry.
