Stuart, loved the first two, not feeling the last one. Thinking about making another coffee table! May decide to colour it, plain sycamore so massive palette. Cheers for all the hints. You going to Spalding?

Thanks for this Terry, I have only every used Melamine Lacquer once on pen and really didn't like the end results. It was on a piece of Italian Olivewood and some parts were really nice and other parts were really dull with no shine at all. I put it down to the wood or user error so will be trying it again using this method. Thanks again and take care Terry. Cheers, Huw
@ChestnutProducts25 күн бұрын
Hi Huw. Quite probably the wood on this occasion - being quite oily, I'd normally suggest using an oil on it, not a lacquer. Hard Wax Oil would be a great choice, use it the same way as I do the Melamine Lacquer (but not sealer), and allow it longer to dry, you can still burnish it at the end to bring up an even higher gloss.

It may just be a difference it terms across the pond, but what is the difference between a stain and a dye? They seem to work quite similarly.
@stewartfuriniАй бұрын
I would say that they ate broadly the same for our purposes of changing the colour of wood. There do appear to be some technical differences between the two about how the colour is created.
@ChestnutProductsАй бұрын
Traditionally, there's no difference, the terms are interchangeable. You can read more at chestnutproducts.co.uk/stain-or-dye-blanket-boxes-and-stools/

That's a great tutorial. A little more formal perhaps than your regular videos, Stewart. Although I did miss that slightly angst-y feel of you working to reach a specific effect. "Will the piece survive?" But your teacher credentials came through more firmly in this.I wonder, would there be any benefit in taking the piece off the lathe, still in the chuck, and working with the surface horizontal? We old people with stiff necks and shoulders consider these things.
@stewartfuriniАй бұрын
Hi Bill....that's a good solution to take the chuck off to do your colouring.

The previous live streamed event, which I think was in 2021, was brilliant. We couldn’t make the real event that year, so watched via the livestream and both felt we were part of all the activities throughout the day. Nigel even watched most of the first day’s demos in the car as we drove down to Devon. Don’t worry he wasn’t doing the driving 😊. For anyone wondering whether it is worth it, I would say YES!

Hello Julia. The Food Safe Finish would be fine to use on the surfaces that come into contact with food, but we would suggest using the Microcrystalline Stick Wax for the buffing process. None of the waxes supplied in the box have been tested as safe to use with food products, and the Friction Polish would not be food safe. I hope this answer helps.
@julia313099 ай бұрын
Thanks for this, I just bought this kit and excited to try it tomorrow! I have a question about the compounds and carnuba wax - are they ok to use on something that food will be served on? If I used food safe finish or friction polish and then applied this buffing system on top would it be ok to serve food?

Hi Terry, do you have to store the wax sticks in any particular way? In a sealed container etc. Great instructional vid Cheers Steve
@ChestnutProducts2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. No, the waxes are solid blocks, to there's no need for any special storage; just somewhere safe and where you'll be able to find them when you want them!

What Chestnut product would you recommend to cover this cream if I put it on a pen for lasting protection ? Thank you.
@ChestnutProducts2 жыл бұрын
The acrylic doesn't really need 'protection', but it's very popular to apply a coat of Microcrystalline Wax afterwards to prevent (in the short term at least) fingermarks showing.

Very cold workshop, What effect will this have with your sealers and polishes?.
@ChestnutProducts2 жыл бұрын
Slower drying, thicker and harder to use. Damp atmosphere can also cause blemishes in the surface.
