The good news is that for the last 40 years the boomers and the companies they work with/for have aggressively kept anyone else from even coming close to learning anything about the trade so hardly anyone will have to even worry about this process anymore.

It’s the same everywhere with engineers. Find one who likes what they’re building/designing and/or worked in the field, maybe to pay for school, and they will knock it out of the park. Mixed results otherwise.

4:41 how much tolerance should be used for various levels of quality? Like could there be a 1 inch tolerance on a draft piece? We just need this approximately square, no surface finishing. Rather, what tolerances are commonly used, is there a standard for that?

i do both the design and the machining in my free time 1 because i do both parts this is a given to me but i have seen ALLOT of people losing there cool over this 2 throw away imperial and then you good 3 YES!! when drawings are done i am usually the one that does the last check if it looks hard to build i just ask the designer and how would you build this ? (and he will know he fucked up some where) 4 agreed 5. easy first first x months let the designer do some machining, i don't have a fancy CNC machine but a nice Column drill machine can do allot. And maybe its just me but when i was still studying we had a large ass technical room where under supervisie we could use the CNC machine / welding etc etc etc and we where teach how to operatie/ work with the machines/tools. (and if you wanted to you could pay for a extra course of 5 days for more in depth knowledge with a machinist present me and 3 others took that course) We used that knowledge to make some things like a winch that had to carry at least 1 ton, we made a jet engine, made a small elevator+ programming it etc. these where projects that needed the be finished every 3 months to do the next term. (and if your product failed you would have to have some good explanation why with calculations backing it up) But i guess this is not normal for most schools to do so ?? i mean its just 8 years ago when i got my degree so ? alto my degree is in electrical and Mechanical Engineer (the course was 50/50 ) but we did this so that we at least had a feeling on what the machines could do. (later i found out that the way we learned solidworks was not optimal but he teacher are also human)

I've got a German friend who is like that, but even after watching this he would still be like "No! If we have the ability to machine that cup-holder with tolerances down to 0.000000000000000001 nano meters, we will do it" The guy never gets anything done.

Most engineers are mindless little monkeys desperately trying to recreate the wheel to justify their 6 figure student debt, that results in laughable garbage that has to be modified and fixed in order for real world applications to actually work. But hey, they can make pretty drawings and solve problems on paper. Why would they need to have real world knowledge and common sense?

4:52 for people who don't understand there are some laptops that have certain screws that say "Warranty avoid", you're not gonna get arrested anyway, but the manifacturer can sue you or make you repair at full price if you have something like that if they can't repair it you get payed, it is in components but it's fine removing it.
