Thanks for telling the truth. I am so tired of people insisting this is a great tractor. It isn't. It's a 30-plus-year-old yard toy that doesn't do anything really well. The guys who push these things lead other people to waste their money and suffer. You do NOT want a John Deere 430 to mow your yard or do any real tractor jobs. If you want a real tractor, get a Kubota subcompact. If you want a real mower, get a zero-turn. I have a 430. It breaks down over and over. Working on it is horrible. If I take it to a shop, I'll spend a fortune, and my yard will grow for at least a month. Over and over, I've had to mow foot-high grass. Deere lovers think it will "run forever." John Deere, on the other hand, has decided it's an end-of-life product, and end-of-life products don't run forever because it becomes impossible to fix them. They are cutting off the parts supply. Some essential parts are no longer made, and others are unbelievably expensive. A muffler for a car with a big block costs $75. A 430 muffler costs almost $400, and It will be $600 in a couple of years if they still sell it. The grilles fall off because of the way they're made, and the first sign a grille has fallen off is running over it, which ruins it. Deere doesn't make new grilles. A used one will run you $800, if you can find it. My Kubota compact has a much, much nicer and bigger grill, and I priced it at $75. The hydraulic cylinders are welded shut for no reason except to cost owners money. They're no longer sold. When your seals go, which they do several times during the tractor's life, you're done unless you feel like paying a machinist $500 to make a cylinder rebuildable. The hydraulic fluid runs the transmission, so if you have a leak, you have a big problem. The loader, if you can find one, only lifts 500 pounds. Basically fit for playing in a sandbox. My Kubota has less that twice the power, but it lifts over three times as much. And unlike my Deere, it has never had a serious problem that wasn't regular maintenance (hydraulic seal...once) or my fault. The Cat 0 hitch is like a Barbie hitch. I have a Cat 1 on a 38-horse tractor, and it's about as small as you should go unless your garden is a windowbox. The mower deck is stamped, not fabricated. Removing and replacing it is a horror. You have to removed it to access the oil plug. As a mower, it's no good. The front wheels go over the grass before the blades, so they push the grass over, preventing long strips from being cut. A zero-turn's blades hit the grass before the mower's wheels. That's because a zero-turn is an actual lawnmower. This tractor is for guys who love working on broken-down machines. It's not for mowing or moving earth. It was a big deal in 1989, 35 years ago, when George H.W. Bush was president. Since then, zero-turns have replaced midget tractors. You will never see a landscaper using a tractor. The value should plummet now that hydraulic cylinders aren't available. I got mine for nearly nothing, so I'll keep running it until I get something better. Then I'll tear it up and sell the parts. I'm looking for a good used Kubota ZD1211. Now that's a mower. I should have sold the 430 several years ago, before mower prices went up 30%. I could have gotten $3000. Now it's more like $1000. If you have a 430, dump it before prices tank. Put the money in a used Kubota zero-turn. If you wait, your 430 will sell for $500, and the mower will cost $3000 more than it does now.

This is a ridiculous “review”. If it’s not your preference that’s ok, but these are opinions not facts. The 430 is a fantastic machine.

Its ok to hate something but to make a video with BS facts like the tractor having 1000 lbs on the front when the tractor all together weights 1170. And the other BS about 1000 ballast on the rear not being enough. Enough for what? I have one with a loader and 500 ballast plus 150 in wheels weights and im able to use the loader safely and have no problem with traction. Again, ok to not like it but no need to make a video with BS facts

Don’t let it get to head, you aren’t hurting anyone’s feelings. You’re right about it not being for you and that’s ok. It sounds like your only gripe is the size but that can be a good thing too as others have said. Sounds like you need some good tires like the Versa Turfs and you’ll be set.

It sounds like a tractor, it drives like a tractor and it works like one! Ya, ya you need a lot of weight in back in order for the 20HP reaches the ground. All tractors need extra ballast for stability and traction, duh. I put 800lbs on my X748 and I’ve had up to 800lbs on the 430. You could push a house over with it! It’s tons of fun with the 44 Loader on it.

I had trouble getting parts for my off brand riding mower so I decided to look at used John Deere. The parts guy at the shop told me he can always get parts so I started looking at older John Deere. An auction from dealer in OH had three non-running machines for sale, AS IS. I figured since they were all 210 ,212, 214, I could at least swap parts and have one good running machine. The bidding started at $50 and was creeping up about $10-25 at a time. I got fed up with the hassle of checking all the time and decided to wait till two days before the end of auction and make my final bid. Two days for closing I saw the bids were still creeping up at a slow pace. At that time it was about $450. I posted $600 and forgot about it cause I was sure someone would outbid me. NOPE evidently my high bid spooked the others, made them think I was going to go as high as I had to and they gave up. A few days later I received email informing me I had won. Wow, so I had to rent a 6x12 trailer and go after them. I live in south central WI. That was the start of my appreciation of the 200's. I started on the 212. The belts in the mower deck were rusted to the pulleys, had to soak with penetrating oil and pry off with screwdriver. Emery cloth cleaned up the pulleys, I choked when I learned how much new pulleys cost. Needed bearings and paint too so I did the whole thing while it was torn down. Changed the fluids to synthetic, did tune up and the beast ran like new. In the meantime I also looked at other used 200's just to see what was out there. Then I started seeing them on marketplace. Some were, "parts only". I feared the guy was going to scavenge all the goodies and junk the chassis so I offered to buy the whole thing. He was glad to have it gone. Evidently some guys just don't see the good of working on an old one when it starts to get rusty, and has faded paint. One guy posted two non running machines. A 210 and a 214. I told him it was a two hour drive to his place and offered $100. He accepted. While I was there, he offered an Ariens 8 horse walk behind snowblower for free. So we loaded it up. That was the best deal I every made! I have been buying up anything that seemed to have potential and now have two 210's that actually have a 10 HP engine. Three 212's, and two 214's. Three are operational and with a bit of luck I'll get a few more running before spring. I have a 212 chassis with no engine. Got that for $25, the guy just wanted it gone. Had one flat and three good tires. At a rummage sale there were mower decks for sale. I got a 38 inch for 210, a 42 inch for 212, and a big deck for a 314 for only $75.They were asking $150. I looked at them and started to leave so he made an offer I could not refuse. The 212 I bought first has mowed my 2 acre lot for three years now. I am so impressed with how rugged they are built. That frame is really rugged. Ill have a whole fleet of machines to leave my grandkids. I'm gonna have to start convincing them of their value.

This is true the 430 is nose heavy, but using the #30 tiller I still run 4 weights off the front to keep it down when loading on a trailer. I have also made 15kv generator to run off the PTO directly 1800 RPM to get 60HZ that weighs close to 500LBS. I agree any attachment running from the front is not so good, but for ground engage attachments off the back the 430 is hard to beet. The low range is useful when pulling very heavy loads and doing ground engage work such as plowing.
