Nice video! What about Sanaa Lathan’s character from “a family that preys”… she has the trope traits but does she deserve empathy like the characters in the video? Considering there was a lot of things that the character did that I didn’t like. I wanna hear other people’s thoughts.

It’s an evolution of the “uppity negro” stereotype. Black women are supposed to know their “rightful” place, and that place is broke and struggling. Wanting to distance yourself from that is considered snobbish. Instead of the agenda being pushed by just racists, it’s now being pushed by black writers and directors like Tyler Perry.

Double D was my cartoon crush as a kid I remember being in kindergarten and the girls were talking about Troy Bolton from HSM and I loved the movie too but just thought we were having a chitty chat and I said I loved double D 😂 that pretty much stamped my role as the “weird black girls” in school lol. Ed edd n eddy is such a gem! And also one of the last cartoon to do old timey animation processes. I’m glad Danny owns the show and is firm on not rebooting it in his recent interview from a few days ago

People usually don't like them cuz they are bitchy and entitled. Most movies make it clear that while they were talented and did work hard, they were able to succeed mostly off the back of their older sibling or parents taking on other aspects of their life in order to help them. Only for them to become wealthy and above the situation their family is still stuck in. They often have the personality of "if I could do it, why couldn't you," and belittle the choices of others or make big family decisions without talking to the family. Like the sister selling the family house without telling anyone in soul food. Or, in the case of Madea, the woman being judgmental to her sister about her parenting when she didn't raise her own son and having to be begged to help him by her mother.

4:29 Well that's just the generational difference between how black families were like back in the day compared to how a lot of us turned out nowadays. Back then we were A LOT more based in our Christianity and family than we are now, because of the passing away of so many elders like "Big Mama" or a "GrandDad" elders who held the family together and made sure that we all got along with each other. Now many of us are little more than strangers to our own families and are selfish as all hell, and don't realize that if you happen to be doing good, giving a family member or two a hand up is actually going to make you look even better (notice I said a hand up and not a hand out) no doubt Terry wasn't a selfish woman and how Big Mama raised her with very strong Christian values that are obviously something she holds dear, especially in the event of Big Mama passing away, those values are like a peace of Big Mama's essence she now cherishes.

Thank you so much for covering this episode bc I was disappointed in her decision too! Like abbot elementary missed her yes but they had moved on and Janine could have even found a good 2nd grade teacher herself. She enjoyed working with the district and you could see that it was a better working environment, especially when it came to her ideas or her quirks. Ava was my least favorite character bc how she would bully (yes bullying especially in the earlier episodes) The other staff weren’t as bad as Ava but they definitely had their moments where they weren’t understanding or picked at her. All and all Janine is the type of person who prioritizes people/things over herself…(her mother, tariq, abbot), she takes responsibility over things that she doesn’t need to, it’s hard for her to let go and move on even if it’s. I’m her best interest. Abbot would have been fine without her but she could have had a huge impact on children in general especially with how difficult high school can be. I do hope she’ll reconsider and work with them again in the future

Tammy always hated her sister she was always jealous of her sister Kimberly She lighter and so-called" Prettier" shes smarter too. Tammy hated her and i always believed tammy set Kimberly up to get raped to knock her off so called high horse . Tammy prayed for her down fall to the point she couldnt even be a good wife and mother to her own family because her jealousy of Kimberly's life how that event didnt take her out she went harder for her goals . Tammy wanted to see Kimberly fail and it kills her when she isnt.

To be fair to Calvin, Kimberly was treating him with scorn constantly and he didn't even know what was going on. With how she was with him, he could've just divorced her without even a look back. But no, dude was sticking it out, doing his best as a husband and was trying to help out the family he married into when Byron got arrested. Even Madea pointed out that she was just taking her anger at her rapist out on him. Dude was upset because of her constant mistreatment of him and the fact that she had a child he didn't know about. How was he supposed to know that she was raped, hence why she's so bitter towards everyone? It was a big secret after all. This was a bombshell that was dropped on not just Byron, but also Calvin without any real context by her bitter ass sister 🤷🏿‍♀️. Unlike Shirley, in the end, he told her that they were going to get help for her. He actually showed her love and compassion instead of just brushing it off or treating her with contempt like the rest of the family did. He's not Miles or Malcolm guys.

The treatment of this archetype always has enraged me bc you mean to tell me what the sister/auntie/cousin who gives the family several thousands of dollars so they dont have to deal with the consequences of their own poor choices and asks for nothing in return is a terrible, rotten evil person bc she doesnt give them all of her money with a smile on her face???? Bc after years of acting as the family bank + insurance policy, she is starting to push back against it and draw a boundary…. This makes her selfish and ungrateful??? Its always a family of freeloaders who make bad decisions vs the one person who actually broke the mold and made a good life for herself. And no one ever acknowledges how HARD that is to do bc your family has a lot of influence on the habits you pick up and how you turn out. Like in the same way hoarder parents often make hoarder children or anxious parents often make anxious children, a stupid parent can make a stupid child. But this archetype is someone who rose above all the stupid around her and she is the problem????

I hate being this archetype. I used to give freely but than inflation really hit. With buying a home at the worst time, major health debt and everything being so expensive the purse is officially closed. You can get a job and work like me. It got so bad my siblings stopped talking to me because I wouldn’t fund their lifestyle. They are all over 18 all four of them and not one of them has a job. All of them live at home. I’m so done enabling laziness and bad behavior. I would give if I saw some motivation and work ethic. But all I see is entitlement with a hand out. So I put the money I otherwise would have spent on freeloaders in mutual funds, the s&p 500, a Roth IRA and my 401k. Sometimes the best thing to do is say yes I’m “broke” and let them fend for themselves and learn a lesson or 2.

honestly, what lesson does this trope teach besides black women cant do anything without judgement? be the snobby rich sister who pays for everything and is always made fun of for assumed snobbery? OR the sister that stayed back to become matriarch and had her dreams stolen away by kids and an abusive husband? since black families tend to be women-led ive seen this in my own family and there's basically no winning...

I’m the “rich auntie/sister” and I’m the eldest child. I was considered “rich”before I got married. Getting married made it worse. However I REFUSE to subject my husband to my side of the family’s financial issues. He already had to go through that on his side of the family. Sometimes the best way to help broke people is to not be one of them.

I agree with everything except when it came to Calvin. Kimberly stayed talking to that man side ways. Which was hella out of pocket and she never once mentioned anything about the past which in all honesty when you get married to someone that needs to be talked about at some point like in couples therapy or something but that has to be spoken about with your spouse. Also I get him taking their son Kim was super angry and that’s not a vibe a child should consistently be around. And he did marry into the family so at the same time they are also his family. I would look at my husband hella crazy too if he started talking to his mother that way 👀 But spot on everything else because Terri deserves better.
