Probably. 😂😂 A lot of composers write one-handed pieces, mostly as exercises for finger independence and to teach people how to implement phrasing within polyphonic lines in one hand. (Like Ravel and Scriabin for instance.) This in particular was just an exercise that I have been playing on the piano for several years now. It's not as difficult to play as it looks. But I revisited as I was practicing the first movement of my third concerto that I'm writing. I'm also trying to learn Chopin's Ballade No. 1, which has a little bit of polyphony. So, it's a fun exercise to revisit, so I thought I'd share it.

Very niceeeee! I love the Scriabinesque sound in the fourth movement. I saw musescore has some problems with the playback of dynamics. If you don't want that to happen, you can add some invisible crescendos and decrescendos before a dynamic change so it doesn't pop. Very good work.

Really nice, beautiful, the starting brought to my mind Satie - Je te veux. That’s the same age Lili Boulanger won her Prix de Rome competition. It wasn’t too clickbait, couple facts and I’m in curious enough. For me the 1st Mvt. had the most unique draw with its strong motives and relaxing treatment primarily, because I feel it sometimes comes down to, loosely speaking, beating the old guys at their game, and when we want to even try, but if you have your own game you don’t have to-and sir, you did in the first Mvt. Here again in the Lento I like and you seem so far to me to have shined in the slow movements, or is it just my inclination of taste, and perhaps moreover what our rushed age more demands? It was interesting and valuable to hear about your many points of frustration with the project this was, and that has dissuaded me from taking on a massive project I was in two minds about embarking upon, of a similar order. 4th of course reminded me of Scriabin’s Prometheus severally, uh but you didn’t mention that…. awkward 😅 The ending did not seem sufficiently conclusive.

Sorry, but i feel this piece has so much wasted potential. The theme is haunting & beautiful, but the progression drags on sounding like its in some drunken stupor. Its also far too repetitive. Introduce some new thematic material. Im sorry for sounding so critical, but i sincerely believe the main theme deserves to be done justice. I wish i had penned something so fine.

The audio is bad how? I gave a few listens (once while actively following the score) and it sounds fine to me. I did notice that on measure 6, you had a crescendo from pianissimo to mezzo-pianissimo, when the last dynamic was a pianissimo, which I doubt made any difference in the playback at measure 6. If it's the bowing midway with longer notes such as the whole note on measure 30, then I'm afraid there's not too much I could suggest. One way I could think of to fix would be to bring the dynamics down one time, (mp becomes p, p becomes pp, ff becomes f, etc.) so that the playback doesn't bow so much. Another is that you could try switching from the violin 1 to the violin 2, which I've heard has less vibrato and might be the sound you're looking for. No guarantees. Optional though if you wanted, you could pan the 2nd violin to the left, 1st violin a bit closer to the middle, cello in the center, and the viola at the right. And then adjust the volume so the sound is evenly spread out for the entire piece overall. In other words, slight imbalances are alright, but should also counter-balance itself if that makes any sense. I enjoyed the Elegie by the way, I could almost connect with it emotionally. Anyways, I hope this helps. Best on your competition.

Is D minor the key of that piece?
@etc.-1912Ай бұрын
So, the original piece is in C Major. The third movement followed a section that was in I believe G minor, either that or D minor. I don’t remember anymore. But the third movement is a very slow transition back to C Major before the more tonally abstract fourth movement.
@nemer_kАй бұрын
In the mixer start by giving the viola an +6-8 point volume increase, then switch the VST of the second violin to the first violin VST. Then increase the first violin by +1 and reduce the second to -1. The cello may not need any changes but in some pieces it's beneficial to bump it as far as +4. With this kind of Mixer profile you will have naturally balanced playback and can use the same dynamics on each instrument for equal sounding volume. Use hidden tenutos when there's playback artifacts like in V1 bar 1. Use hidden accents or dynamic bumbs when shorter notes don't sound over the other instruments.

This is a pretty nice piece, and I think the suggestions by @cardboardcricket1444 would further enhance the effects you intend, such as the long cresc. to the climax and the decresc. afterwards, in addition to pizz. and tremolos to add further textural interest. About purely technical MuseScore stuff, though, I have two tips on how to make it sound better: 1. I think changing the Violin 1 sound from the "Violin 1 solo" to "Violin 2 solo" makes a HUGE difference; Vln. 1 sounds very strained and scratchy, while Vln. 2 sounds more confident, in tune, and less "uncertain", if that makes sense. 2. Also, adding MuseFX Reverb under "Master" in the mixer adds more reverb (with an option to change it as much as you'd like), as if you are listening in a music hall, which makes a big difference. Sometimes, some pieces of music need a bit of extra reverb because, without it, they sound drier. If I remember correctly, you can find this in the Muse Hub, under Effects. I do these two steps on all my chamber music pieces, so these are just my preferred options, but let me know if you try these out and if they work better for you!
@cardboardcricket1444Ай бұрын
I’m not the best at writing for strings, but I think some pizzicato would add some interest to the entire piece. Maybe also a few tremolos leading up to the climax? Currently it’s very, very, very pretty, but a lot of it is just held chords, and some diversity could make it more interesting. I don’t know the rules, but also a few solos could be cool (maybe the violin and the fellow having a melodic conversation of something?). The playback sounds great btw
@etc.-1912Ай бұрын
I thought about tremolo. The problem I found trying out pizz was that I wasn't finding places I could put it where I was giving the player enough time to switch between pizz and arco, although I suppose in a string quartet that's not so much of a concern.
@cardboardcricket1444Ай бұрын
@@etc.-1912 hmmm, perhaps the combination of layering motifs in pizzicato and arch, along with some tremolo leading up to the climax would be cool then. I remember that the first time I was listening, I thought it seemed sort of uninteresting leading into the fortissimo, so the layering could make it get progressively more chaotic, and then resolve with a sort of calmness (…?). I’m bad at explaining these things, but I really do think it also sounds great as it is

I really enjoyed it! if I could say some things it would be: When the string has melody and brass has harmony, brass at same level of dynamic as strings will cover it. I suggest one dynamic less in this scenario. I see that this witten with pairs of 2 for brass and winds. It is a bit unusual to have 3 clarinets and bassoon out of the blue when the other instruments and their auxiliary being a doubling.
@LordoftheFleetАй бұрын
No, it's not too hard. The vast majority of concert pianists would be able to perform this. There are echoes of Rachmaninoff, but there is an individual voice emerging as well. However, for a first movement, more development and length is really needed. It's all over too quickly. I know that's easier said then done, but I'm reminded of the number of times I've had to add whole passages into my scores when I realized that everything was over all too soon. It takes so much time and hard work to write this stuff, and because of that it's so easy to overlook the real length that's needed for sunstance, if you know what I mean. As someone has already mentioned, the Musescore playback doesn't do the piece justice. It's a pity that Musescore didn't adopt NotePerformer
@etc.-1912Ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting! I've been practicing it on the piano, and for the most part it's all actually a lot easier than it looks. I always have trouble with getting things to a good length after I write them. I tend to have to start over from scratch on the piano. I think this is mostly because I don't tend to make very many musical decisions when I'm notating things. Most of the time I'm transcribing ideas that I record from my phone, which is why this took only 4 days to write. The actual editing process is what I struggle with. I'm sure there's a better way of doing this, but since I've never really taken any composition lessons, i don't know how. How do you go about lengthening things? Do you just give yourself a lot of blank measures and try a few things out until you find a direction you like and follow it? I've also thought about "saving as" and trying a couple of different ideas one at a time so I don't get frustrated or burnt out on just one idea. Ideally, I'd much prefer to write on staff paper, but I don't have any.
