Thank you very much for the useful information! Myself and a group of friends are planning to visit Iceland in March 2025 for a short trip (around 8th-13th). We don't intend to go into the highlands, just the golden circle, the reynisfjara beach and the westfjords. I have a couple questions about this trip. Based upon our plans, would it be possible to do this with a 2WD vehicle, or is a 4x4 is required at this time of the year? Are the Westfjords easily accessible this time of the year?
@janiniceland
@janiniceland 21 сағат бұрын
Glad it's helpful :) Most fo the roads in Westfjords are accessible in March even with 2wd, unless you encounter some crazy weather (but that applies to any region of the island). But it is still a very snowy region with some mountain passes and so 4wd is still recommended especially for the safety. Just keep in mind that to drive around Westfjords alone is around 700-800km, so I would even consider plan b - don't go all the way to Reynisjara, but maybe visit Snæfellsnes peninsula on your way north instead. Then you can maybe better use your time (and have a little buffer in case of a storm) and then also take a ferry from from there from Stykkishólmur over the bay. Just an idea :)

Thanks Neil! Exactly, I guess that's really a big advantage for all of us coming from places with cold winters. For me being from Czech Republic, it also wasn't a rocket science, but I can imagine it isn't so straight forward for people from places with all year around summer temperatures. Haha, yeah overpacking that is whole different video. I was planning to do one about minimalist packing in the future. - If you are bored on the airport after your trip you can text me what you wish you had and what things you didn't use at all. I'd be curious to know and it would be really awesome for the video! Just if you have time :) ([email protected])

Hi Jan, thank you for your very informative videos! Subscribed! I am going to Iceland in October, it will be my first time. As a nature photographer one of my goals is to catch the Aurora borealis of course! :) But I have this doubt, can we move "freely" in and out of the campsites at night? Or there are restricted hours when you cant leave the camspite or enter? And do we need to book in advance the campsites or is just arrive and pay? Thank you so much! I will see your other videos! Congrats for the channel! Keep it going!
@janiniceland
@janiniceland 5 күн бұрын
Hello Pedro! thank you so much! I wouldn't be too worried, as far as I know you can move freely and the hours aren't restricted. Of course there're the unwritten rules like don't leave your engine running late in the evening as many people are already asleep and so on...you know, just the common sense kind of things. With the booking, you can prebook some but you don't have to. if there's nobody collecting payments, they will most likely show up in the morning. Every campsite is a bit different, and so it is hard to say exactly what to expect, but it is always all very relaxed overall. Also there shouldn't be that many people camping in October, so that's even better. Just check beforehand which of the campsites are operating when you're there. Some of them are closing by the end of September or during October.

Great video mate, I feel exactly the same way about concrete and putting railing on the trails / dumbing them down. The main problem is that the peak season is very short in Iceland so probably in the future if people want to enjoy more solitude when travelling you would have to go outside of the summer season.
@janiniceland
@janiniceland 6 күн бұрын
Thank you! That's true, going outside of the main season is the safe bet for avoiding crowds, especially if you want to visit south of Iceland. Or you can still visit more remote areas and even in the summer there're usually not that many people around

I went 4 times to Iceland in winter. I was wearing shorts 95% of the time. But the gloves are a problem. When it is -10C with a strong wind and you want to film the Strokkur, and it waits 10 minutes before erupting, you cannot wear gloves while holding the camera. And then your hands are frozen before the eruption starts.

Hi Jan, thanks for this video highlighting the weather in Iceland during the Summer months. Glad you got the Snowstorm in June on video as it is hard to comprehend that happening. It is so true that the weather can change quickly and be very variable especially there in Iceland. It is good to have some warm clothing and also summer clothing to make sure you are covered for any weather conditions. It is awful to be in a climate where you don't have the adequate cloths you need to be comfortable. The footage that you had sitting on your deck with the Snow capped Mountain in the distance was just stunning.

Hello Ben! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) It sure was a big surprise for everyone here. @janiniceland
@janiniceland 16 күн бұрын
I think it makes sense as long as you plan your trip according to that. Many people don't count in the daylight hours and they fall behind their schedule. I think the best thing to do at this time of the year is to stay for either more than 7 days and take things slow - if you want to see and do a lot or to plan the trip in the way that you won't drive a lot and you maximise the daylight hours as much as you can. - Often people who come in summer want to come back in the winter and the other way around, so I say go for it, visit in November and come back some day again in the future :) - don't worry about not being able to see everything - ive been here for years and still feel like there's so many places I haven't visited!
