Paul & Anthony, you could strip off the old sole to the welt. Remove part of the welt at the back of the heal where its been grounded away by an iffy cobbler. Leave a 270° welt in situ. Fit a U shaped leather heal base spliced glued to footbed & 8 nails to secure. Pluck out old welt stitches. Re-cork & new shank etc. Apply leather midsole & Dainite sole rebuild. Outstich to secure 270° method. Heel lifts Dainite top lift. Trim, sand wheel, ink the edges, buff up. Hey presto. Just like some boot makers apply a 270° split welt finish. It doesn't need to be a 360° welt. 😉

Thank you very much for the video! I bought a pair of Arthurs in dark leaf with the diamond sole from your good selves a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful shoes! Used to wear Loake 1880s - definitely a step up in quality and craftsmanship 👌🏼 Alfreds on the 125 last are also worth considering if you're not a fan of the brouge design.

Fabulous shoes the Arthurs! Recommend going half a size down from trainer size (I'm size 10 in a trainer but 9.5 across the Cheaney range). Both dark leaf colours look great to me. Sorry I hear you're quiet - I've just ordered some Barker boat shoes from your website so hopefully that helps 😃 More sunny weather to come...

@@shoehealer8853 Child’s book ‘The Hard Way’ a Jack Reacher thriller features a description of our very own Tenterden. “His shoes were bench-made by a company called Cheaney, from Northampton in England. The style Reacher had chosen was called Tenterden, which was a brown semi-brogue made of heavy pebbled leather. Size twelve. The soles were heavy composite items bought in from a company called Dainite. Reacher hated leather soles. They wore out too fast and stayed wet too long after rain. Dainites were better. Their heels were a five-layer stack an inch and a quarter thick. The Cheaney leather welt, the Dainite welt, two slabs of hard Cheaney leather, and a thick Dainite cap. Each shoe on its own weighed more than two pounds”.

I've had a couple of pairs where there had been holes/worn away sections on the back of shoes I've bought to restore. What I do, due to not having that beautiful leather stitching machine, is to make the hole neat, trace it's shape, cut out a piece of leather the same shape as the missing leather but a bit bigger, skive the extra of the patch, pull enough space around the hole the lining leather away from the counter, glue the patch under the lining leather then glue the lining leather to the patch. Looks great, doesn't take any length out of the shoe, and uses up old sock liners I have. The only way you know it's been done is the variation in colour of the patch. Great vid.

Hey I could use your help and some advice, I recently bought these vintage or retro L.L Bean converse like shoes with rubber soles they still have some give and flexibility but it’s obvious they haven’t been worn in a while, they aren’t falling apart, and are solid but they do have the telltale signs of cracking from old rubber not being worn out. I know that one thing I can go is wear them out and about so they keep there give and flexibility. But is there any other advice I could use to keep em full of life, so that some of these white appearing crumble cracks don’t get worse or maybe even heal em?

I’ve had Jeffrey West shoes in the past, because I liked their style and construction. However, they mainly use Bookbinder leather (also known as Hi Shine or ‘Polished’). It always cracks because the coating prevents the leather being conditioned. In many cases it cracks before they need resoling. There’s no point getting a Goodyear welted shoe if the upper isn’t resilient. I’d advise anyone buying shoes to avoid this leather.

Good luck with those. Any chance of knowing what glue you use on bookbinder upper cracks, just resoled a lovely pair of Church's with Dainites, I only bought them (used) as they were so cheap and I had a too big sized pair of Dainite soles laying about that I wanted to have a go at. Lovely shoes, probably cost a fortune, even compared to other proper makers, but the swines are in black bookbinder, cracks are just about coming, so with trees in and a nice new straight sole should be serviceable and make a great wet weather decent shoe. thanks for the video. M

Only glue the uppers as a last result, stick plenty of cream around the cracks because once the surface has opened (cracked) the cream will be able to penetrate. Glue is just a bostic 6092 Similar to evo stick. Thanks for your input 👍

Saphir Cognac shoe cream number (10) is the matching colour for the tricker's C Shade leather shoes. Leather uppers do get darker if the shoe is ageing. Saphir neutral shoe cream will even make the tricker's C Shade a bit darker because of the pigment in the shoe cream. 2:24

Some English shoe makers use beech wood for shoe trees. I've read that the only reason cedar wood was used in the US was that it was cheap, smelled nice and was readily available. Now people think it has some sort of special properties which make it better but I'm dubious. It is insect repellent to some degree but I'm not aware of any shoe eating moths. The only advantage that I'm aware of is that it is relatively light so probably a bit better for travelling.
