I'm sure Crockett & Jones and Trickers are delighted about the Church's price hike and will no doubt pick up some of the Church's skilled workers recently made redundant. In fact, given recent inflationary rises in British shoes, even Cheaney may pick up some Church customers now their standard range shoes and boots are flirting with the £500 mark.

The last CEO of Burberry did the same thing with their products. You can find online interviews he did at the time where he openly states that to be seen as luxury, products have to be expensive. So he over night doubled the prices. No change in quality. Just twice the price.

We live in a capitalist socket and what you describe is capitalism. Almost the definition of “brand” is that it commands a price considerably above the sum of its costs. That applies to shoes, handbags, cars - everything that comes from a “brand”. The price at which something is sold is a combination of its costs (materials plus labour plus overheads plus profit plus retail costs etc.) and what the market will sustain. That’s the result of…capitalism. It’s a shit system but show me something better

I've only resoled and refurbished one pair of Church's Darwin loafers, so I'm no expert, but the construction was pretty much exactly the same as Cheaney and Crockett & Jones shoes I've done. The only difference I could see, and it may be model dependant was the leather upper was a bit thicker and they were very robust... lovely shoes, traditionally "bench" made. Don't know if they should be twice the price of other good brands.

Ridiculous, my Amberly Chelsea boots cost me £365 3 years ago, now on Churches website for £980 and Harrods at £1000 they'll be like Alfred Sargent soon, in liquidation if they don't review the price structure, two cobblers in my area who i used, stopped stocking them, one said quality down and prices extortionate

Day of reckoning is coming for luxury brands that have put prices up so much last 3 years!!!! Pricing is officially in the “taking the piss category” and this comes from someone that will always be able to afford luxury given my £800k+ annual income as a banking executive. I have arrived to a point where both myself, my wife and close friends in the same industry are saying enough is enough and not because we can’t afford it (funnily enough I am actually making more today due to promotions)! £3-5k for a jacket? 1k for a pair of boots? £500 for a T-shirt? They are taking the piss and am sick of filling up Bernard Arnault’s & Co. Wallets. I just cannot justify paying these prices! The brands the quality are simply not worth the current prices!

Church's shoes are amazing. I bought two pairs for myself in 1987 that I'm still wearing today - one pair new and one pair second hand - probably ten years old when I got them!!! I paid £110 in 1987 for the new pair, which was a lot of money back then, but nowhere close to this new Prada pricing level. Makes me a bit sad. I'm also sad that Prada are closing the small accounts like yours. Good shoes should be available in great shoe shops everywhere, not just in flagship stores.

I bought a pair of Church's Chetwynd brogues from ebay for a great price.. unfortunately the seller neglected to mention that they smell really bad (musky mouldy smell) which i've never been able to get rid of. I even sent them to Church's for a full refurb hoping they would get rid of the smell but they came back smelling the same. I can't wear them now because as soon as I get them out the box I can smell them and I fear others will smell them too

Hello Mike, you've got me very interested now...are you talking about stitches per inch on the sole to welt ? A smaller stitch has always been seen as a sign of better quality shoes, but too small a stitch causes the leather to perforate. I'll ask about and see what i can find out. Anyway thanks for your input. Antony
@mikewinston8709
@mikewinston8709 3 ай бұрын
@@shoehealer8853 Yes. Stitches per inch. I bought my first Church shoes in 1973 - Chetwynd; they were half lined with linen in those days as a matter of interest and not fully leather lined. However. Looking to purchase a pair in the mid 2000s I noticed that the sole to welt looked really cheaply done; like a Barker or Loake of the day. I looked further and found this to be the case with the other shoes in the branch; Church, Jermyn St. To cut a long story short I bought Edward Green instead. I think Prada did what I guess ‘fashion houses’ always do; buy an old brand, trendy it up; introduce training shoes and the like and then milk it. I guess at 69 I’m playing the old codger card a bit….🤣.

Yes! For what Church’s used to be buy Cheaney who were bought out by the Church family in any case! Church’s is just a brand now riding on the laurels of its previous owners! You may as well buy Edward Green at the prices they’re now talking about! If you cannot afford Edward Green or Cheaney,Crockett & Jones then buy Loake which is a similar quality to modern Church’s but at a more appropriate price for the quality!

I have three pairs of pre-prada Church's shoes - all vintage/2nd hand. I do like the brand but even the pre-prada prices were quite full. I try to stay loyal to Northampton makers but there are so many really good and really great shoemakers coming out of Spain and Portugal, I woud struggle (as a chap who hasn't a lot of spare cash) to buy C&J or Church's at full price, new. When I have bought new, I opted for Carlos Santos (a field boot). I have a few Loake 1880 range shoes and they are my bench mark for standard: in other words, I only go up from that range (say, Alfred Sargent or C&J). I wonder what the ex-Church's guys at Cheaney think of it all? Tony

For sure there are differences between materials used in C&J, church's, trickers, Alfred Sargent, barkers, loake But in my experience having owned, all of the above The differences are very minor, imo. In fact, in my case, barkers 460 last and I Alfred Sargent 87 and 89 last are better in terms of fit versus : C&J 325, trickers 4444,4497 (pinched pinky toes, heel slip issues) I learned that fit is more important than brand. You can find good quality shoes even from lower tier northampton brands

Unfortunately, they are not what they used to be! But this makes them very affordable but also makes the real "Made in England" shoes look silly expensive.
