Have you seen a lactation consultant? The good news is that newborns' mouths grow very quickly. One option is to establish your milk supply with a pump for a few weeks until his mouth is big enough for your nipple. First, you might want to watch our longer free video and try those strategies. You can find it here: naturalbreastfeeding.com/

It's good to think and learn about this now. I suggest watching our free 38-minute video on positioning, which explains more specific strategies for finding comfortable positions. (link at the end). Also, consider attending breastfeeding support group meetings, where you can see others nursing their babies. If you're in the U.S., this would be La Leche League or Breastfeeding USA. My first I had no problems and it was quite easy! I just had my second and we are 4 days postpartum and his mouth is on the smaller side and it is sooo painful to breastfeed. His lips curl in instead of out like with my first. I try pushing his lips out around my nipple but it’s not helping. His latch is very shallow compared to my first baby. I have the motive to do whatever I can to make breastfeeding work. His suck is extremely strong and I know we are both so capable but i definitely need help to figure out how to make his latch deeper. Thank you so much for your education.

Have you tried the positions in this video, where the baby does all the latching? When they do it themselves, they usually latch with a more wide-open mouth. And the semi-reclined positions mean as baby continues to nurse, gravity helps him get on deeper. Watch the video again, give it a try, and let me know how it goes. Best of luck!

This concept exists in our countries in North Africa. It's a period when mother and child are very much surrounded and protected, because it's thought that during these forty days they are very vulnerable. I'm surprised to see that this notion exists everywhere in the world. Thank you !

This video is so helpful. Any recommendations on body/baby position when the nipple is towards the underside of the breast? I typically have to help my newborn find the nipple by holding the breast so that the nipple is turned more towards him as he lies on me.

My 5 week old baby latched perfectly with this technique and it was way more comfortable, but I felt like she wasnt latching deep enough as I still felt some pain. How can I help her latch deeper?
@NancyMohrbacher
@NancyMohrbacher 5 ай бұрын
From your description, it sounds like latching is much more comfortable than it was previously but there is still some pain. My guess is that you have some nipple damage. In this case, even when you achieve a deep latch, you might still feel some discomfort. If I'm right, this pain should lessen quickly. When your nipple enters what I call "the comfort zone," there's no friction or pressure, and your nipple can heal even if you keep breastfeeding. Take a look at this video, where I describe this to Michelle: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y86Ydt1nmtLMgGg.htmlsi=hEhueT2Ce1YG96Va

That sounds really challenging! I'm sorry breastfeeding has been so difficult for both of you. I suggest watching our longer video (link at the end of this response) and using the various adjustments described to find your own best fit. In these positions, gravity helps baby get on deeper and stay on. If that doesn't help, it's time to contact an IBCLC for in-person help. Do you know how to find an IBCLC in your area? Best of luck! Hello! Two questions! 1. We've tried this position 4 times now. My baby has a lip tie and has struggled to latch properly (very chompy pacman style and sucks a bit too hard). I caught glimmer of him eating effectively. His cheeks and ear finally starting moving and his lips created the suction cup like I've never seen before. It was 17 minutes into feeding on my right side, and he ate well for about 5-6 minutes. However, we have not been able to replicate that experience. He continues to latch his "old way" which is much more painful when lying down vs. the cradle hold. Any thoughts on what I can do? It's so hard to continue to commit to this method when it's more painful to latch and wait patiently for him to figure it out. And 2. What is the best way to delatch and relatch in this position if his latch is bad and a lot of time has passed and he isn't adjusting. Or perhaps that is not recommended? Just really struggling with the pain. Thank you!

Rebecca, Every nursing couple needs to find their own best fit with this approach. That involves trying the 3 adjustments explained in this video. Birst, dry different body slopes. You may do better (like Essie does in this video) leaning further back or you may do better a little more upright. In any position, be sure your baby is fully resting on your body, not supported by your arms. You should be able to lift your hands and your baby stay in place. The second adjustment is your baby's lie. Is he vertical on your body, horizontal, diagonal? You can feel free to vary this at different feedings or during the same feeding. Third is adjust your breast. Does it help if you shape your breast when he latches? Keep in mind that this is not one position, but a different approach to positioning with lots of variations. The reason it works better for many nursing couples is that gravity helps you baby latch on deeper, which should trigger more comfortable nursing. You don't say how old your baby is. Usually, this approach works best during the first 8 weeks or so. But you should always do whatever works best for you. If that's the cradle hold, go with it. Also, I encourage you to work with a lactation consultant if you can't get comfortable on your own. There's no reasons to go it alone. Help is available!

I’ve been facing difficulties on deep latch, my baby had lip tie and tongue tie which I found them out when she was 24 days, but it was the bad impact of the usage of bottle (said the pediatrician), my daughter got incission right away. But she’s now 6months and still having a problem with deep latch, can this position also help to fix her latch? Because this actually what the lactation counselor told me to do agter the incission but in my daughter’s early days I felt like I couldnt bear the pain I got on my body so I chose to breastfeed her while laying on bed

If you're still struggling after trying the adjustments in our longer video, contact an IBCLC in your area and arrange for a one-on-one visit, so she can evaluate what you're doing and provide personal feedback. In some cases when the nipple is truly too large for a newborn's small mouth, you may need to express your milk 8x/day until your baby's mouth grows larger. Fortunately, that doesn't take long--maybe a few weeks at most. Then your baby can nurse effectively. Best of luck!

It works no matter what your breast and nipple size and shape. I suggest experimenting with your body slope, as each mom and baby respond differently to this adjustment.
