this isn't my first time being pregnant, but it is my first time really really wanting to breastfeed, the first two children I had, I just gave up on breastfeeding. I thought I had a high pain threshold, but it brought me to tears. this time I'm educating myself, ive watched MANY videos and there's a couple people on youtube that really gave me that "aha!" moment... your videos are definitely a part of that group! thank you so much!

+Krysta Busekrus Hi Krysta, Essie, the mom in this video clip, had that experience, too, the first time she tried these positions. In her case, leaning back further made all the difference. However, keep the 3 adjustments in mind: adjust your body (which Essie needed to do), adjust your baby (which also made a difference for her), and adjust your breast. To review how these 3 adjustments work, watch this clip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms-lerSZx9CnZqc.html

@@NancyMohrbacher is there different advice for starting this with a distraught large 7 week old baby? And what to do when they're too long to touch all of you?
@NancyMohrbacher
@NancyMohrbacher 3 жыл бұрын
@@dustyandchelseamcclellan5670, the first thing is to calm the baby. A distraught baby is unlikely to be receptive to anything new. Perhaps do half or a third of a feeding in the usual way before adjusting your positioning. As far as baby being "too long to touch all of you," what's helpful is for baby to have full frontal contact of the torso and hips, unrestricted hands, and contact of something (could be rolled up cloth) on either the tops or bottoms of his feet. Foot contact with the parent or another object helps orient baby. Help this helps!

So I have a random question. My mother told told me that she was not able to breastfeed me, so she had a babysitter breastfed me for about a year. Could that possibly have any effect on why I never felt any sort of a bond with my mother, like my siblings did?
@NancyMohrbacher
@NancyMohrbacher Жыл бұрын
Emotional attachment between parent and child is a complex and ongoing process. One aspect (such as who breastfed you) would not be enough to explain your feelings (or lack of feelings) about your mother. There's likely much more to your story.

These types videos on top of visits to a lactation consultant - who has some different but equally valuable lessons to teach (thank you Medicare) has stopped me from being so angst ridden about breastfeeding, the feeling that "you're doing it wrong" is an awful one, especially when newborn baby is on a learning journey too.

My 5 week old baby latched perfectly with this technique and it was way more comfortable, but I felt like she wasnt latching deep enough as I still felt some pain. How can I help her latch deeper?
@NancyMohrbacher
@NancyMohrbacher 4 ай бұрын
From your description, it sounds like latching is much more comfortable than it was previously but there is still some pain. My guess is that you have some nipple damage. In this case, even when you achieve a deep latch, you might still feel some discomfort. If I'm right, this pain should lessen quickly. When your nipple enters what I call "the comfort zone," there's no friction or pressure, and your nipple can heal even if you keep breastfeeding. Take a look at this video, where I describe this to Michelle: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y86Ydt1nmtLMgGg.htmlsi=hEhueT2Ce1YG96Va

This video is so helpful. Any recommendations on body/baby position when the nipple is towards the underside of the breast? I typically have to help my newborn find the nipple by holding the breast so that the nipple is turned more towards him as he lies on me.

That sounds really challenging! I'm sorry breastfeeding has been so difficult for both of you. I suggest watching our longer video (link at the end of this response) and using the various adjustments described to find your own best fit. In these positions, gravity helps baby get on deeper and stay on. If that doesn't help, it's time to contact an IBCLC for in-person help. Do you know how to find an IBCLC in your area? Best of luck! I tried this earlier. It won't work for me and my baby( 1month old). Or maybe I did it in a wrong way? I don't know. I'm losing hope. He's bottle feed. I pumped breastmilk. He will just cry when I introduce my nipple. And he'll move his head side ways as if giving me sign that he doesn't want or comportable with it. I have flat nipple. I want to natural breastfeed my son. What should I do. First time mom. Thank you.

@@NancyMohrbacher what do the women who cannot afford a lactation consultant or who aren't near one do? And how do people fine a credible one?? What I think is really despicable is how you and other lactation consultants market something that should be given free to all women, breastfeeding help shouldn't be optional or costs money. At the hospitals the lactation consultants there are useless and it is difficult to find an independent one without paying some kind of money. You women should be ashamed of yourselves. It's disgusting that people would market something like this fo financial gain when you know women are really struggling and babies aren't getting the food made for them.

@@ASmith-jn7kf My KZfaq channel *is* free, and the reason I created it was to provide information that is enough for many families to solve their own nursing problems. For low-income families in the US, I suggest contacting the local public health department. In my experience, breastfeeding help is available there from lactation consultants and/or peer counselors who are dedicated to making sure all families get the help they need. Most LCs I know in private practice also apply a sliding scale of payments based on income. And not all hospitals LCs are useless. If you're not happy with those you met, look around. In my area, very skilled LCs provide outpatient help to families and charge nothing for those who can't afford to pay. I'm really sorry if you had some bad experiences, but there really are good people out there.

@@ASmith-jn7kf In addition to the suggestions I made below, there are also volunteer peer support organizations that provide free lactation help all over the world. One example is La Leche League International. Another in the US is Breastfeeding USA. These experienced nursing parents provide both support and lactation help at no charge. I've volunteered for both of these organizations and given free help to families this way for nearly 40 years. If you're in Australia, check out the Australian Breastfeeding Association. They're awesome!

@@ASmith-jn7kf I would blame the country you're in for not supporting medical care for its citizens. I'm guessing America? Other countries subsidise this form of care. Where I live in Australia, Medicare will cover 6 weeks of consulting. Blame your greedy government, not the professionals who have worked hard to learn their skill set.
