For my store in the US the time between the announcement of 3rd edition and it's launch dried up the Malifaux sales to the point that I was probably 90% of the sales for Malifaux in the store and I wasn't using them for Malifaux. There was also a time for roughly 6 months where you could not get Core Rulebooks after the launch. Yes they had a download you could use to get the rules, but physical copies are key for a games success. Lest we forget they also decided to split their focus at this time not just with another miniatures game, but also a RPG and board games (some of which were actually decently successful). I have also never understood the practice of basically closing down right after the sales they do for a period of time to catch up. No successful business ever says "We have made enough money right now, we need to catch up." Especially around Black Friday and the winter holidays. The mind boggling thing about it is that the community is generally okay with it. If GW did something similar the internet pitchforks and torches would be rampant.

Malifaux 1 was the only good one tbh. Metal models were better and suited the style more. The game was also less ability focused. Also like other people are saying I think there's a lot to be said about what games even benefit from growing through the LGS models, at what scale, and to what end.

Was going to make a comment about something going "brr" - but the key motivating factor for the growth in printing IMO is GW. Their pricing strategy creates the demand for 3D printing. The issue is that when as a company you go public - the expectation is continual revenue growth. That means that as a luxury/niche product you continually have to have significant player base growth or power creep/"Edition Evolution" to force your existing base to spend to generate that sales growth. GW has embraced the latter. They've priced out the next generation from their product, and eventually the current purchasers will age out.
@thel1chkingКүн бұрын
The problem is not so much having a book associated with your army. It's the fact that they contain crucial rules - which they know (that's why they sell it). The army books should only contain artwork, hobbying, lore etc... All rules should only be free. That's why people are going to Wahapedia or just canceling the rules altogether and using OPR.

So many classic books we'll never see again. The 3.5 edition Chaos Space Marine Codex being chief among them, but there are plenty of others. Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters, the 4th edition Space Marine Codex, 4th Edition Guard with build your own regiment, 3rd edition Tyranids where you could customize hive fleets, 6th edition Hordes of Chaos, Vampire Counts and Skaven! Flawed, yes. But beautiful nonetheless. Not to mention FUN! Rolling to see how big your Death Company would be. Trying to force a Necron player to phase out. Ork looted vehicles! Some of it is generational. I'm closing in on 40. Im never going to enjoy a miniatures game the way I did 40K in high school, so I look back on the 3rd and 4th edition eras fondly. But I also think there's an essential magic of the two games at that time that has been lost. 10th edition is great at flying off the shelves, but it's terrible for making memories.

I'm really glad you returned to the point about how you can always use your models. The latest angst I've heard is around the changes to Kill Team and how models from the Compendium won't be able to be used. Death Guard, in particular, seems to be a complaint - despite the fact that you'll almost certainly be able to field Nurgle afflicted Chaos Space marines. The idea that we can't use our toys a certain way unless GW gives us specific permission in the form of telling us "this model, and only this model, uses this set of rules" seems to be a creeping issue and it's something gamers are inflicting on themselves.

I picked up a crew when 2e came out, but was immediately turned off by the faction/crew dynamic (in-game, a player has access to all models in a faction, so having only one crew leaves players more open to hard counters and NPE). I finally got over myself and started playing the game this year, and have come to the conclusion that the game is a) an incredible achievement in game mechanics and b) way way too complicated! And not only that: unlike other complicated games, where you can at least shoot your way to a fun time, Malifaux is synergy and strategy first, so you kinda have to know how to play before you can play. It's a shame, because the card mechanics are immersive and engaging, the background rich and well-written, and the models utterly stunning.

I’d also say the models invalidated is a thing and many people will have an issue with it. Even if you don’t and I don’t , many will. At the end of the day GW can fix these things , so that’s why they get so much hate. Invalidated models wasn’t a thing when I started to play and if it was I never would have bought in. Now ? I’m kinda stuck in it for good or bad and that is also a bad feeling.

I think people really need to think through what "invalidating" a model means. If there is an issue with people giving you grief over appropriate proxies and stand ins, I think that's something we should start to think of as a cultural issue for gamers. I'm kind of sad I didn't get any Evocators on Dracolines to stand in for Fulminators whomst I think are too ugly to field no matter how good they are. Proxies and substitutes are great - you can have a unit that isn't the same as every other one out there and that's what should be celebrated in the hobby.

The problem with them is that they need to moderate their power hard, because with access to most imperial forces they are open for some seriously broken combos if not approached carefully. I feel like it's just a way to sell bunch of other models they made recently, and that's it. There would be some unique inquisition based units released alongside, not just a hero or two. It was absolutely bare ninimum release and they tried to compensate with battleforces of people would totally boycot them.

There are only two things (excluding world wide nuke Armageddon)that can "kill" GW. It is GW itself and apathy of buyers. As long as the execs at GW don't turn the light off and there are legions ready to rebuy their armies the line is going to be pushed further and further. Because the buying power of a 40y old is nothing comparing to that of a 50-60y old who got rid of the kids and is looking at his pension. My mother HATED my dads gun collection. The fact that GW is a public company beholden to shareholders is the likely cause of this. Executives push the firehose to boost quarterly sales not caring that in the future, they will likely cannibalize their own sales as there is too much out there and people will buy in the secondary market. These executives don't stay long as they jump from job to job so it's someone else's future problem.
@tobyjohnson91362 күн бұрын
If there was ever a company ill-suited to being public it's GW. (Look how well privately-owned Lego Group are doing both in terms of now and sustainably maintaining their success) They're taking the modelling side out of their model range to help drive the push of new models rather than having healthy sales of well-made models over time. If you can't kitbash and if the whole idea of converting is downplayed there is more focus on "new" coming from the new monopose plastic they throw at you. There are so many people who advocate against some great kits because they're "old" rather than if there is anything to improve and if GW won't just make them worse. See the new Scions. It's like MCU movies there is a whole audience of people who get more excited for the hype of the release of new things than the things themselves, it's insane and the most post-modern thing ever. And is similar to the lack of understanding among "lore video" people about 40k being a setting with nowhere to go and a desire to "move the timeline forward" despite even when that happens GW being forced to really make it a back to status quo "change". GW will oversaturate and overexploit 40k into the ground. They took the perfection of the 1998 onwards SM model line and just made the much worse Primaris. Despite the existence of the Death Watch and Rubric Marines released shortly before which are the same old model but with slightly longer and more straight-posed legs doing the same thing people will actually claim GW needed to make the Primaris in order to make "true-scale" marines. Or even more deranged that they needed to make them monopose in order to make their poses more dynamic. Look at any Primaris or new HH kit, do those guys look "dynamic" in terms of their torso-hip connection?
@necaacenКүн бұрын
@@tobyjohnson9136 the modern more monopose plastic minis do generally look a lot more dynamic tho, and when i started the hobby in the late 80s almost everything was monopose metal. theres way more kitbashing going on now than there used to be, people are doing all sorts of things. the majority of primaris marines look way better than the old marines, so do the new heresy models.

Fantasy kept up the quality on their army books until almost the end, but 40k really started literally slimming down their books to just rules, fewer full color pictures, less art, less stories and other snippets of lore. Really, 2nd edition 40k and 4th edition fantasy is where I draw the line. Everything past that feels very different, and you could draw a straight line from that point to what we have now.

WHOOOOA! Hold up! Wait a minutes! Leeeeets back up to that point where you're talking about that one customer who bought that mini from somewhere else other than your store. You stated that this gave you animosity towards that customer, for buying something outside your store. You then proceeded to talk about how your customer is wrong for not supporting the place they are playing in. Think about that for a minute.... THAT is not the game company causing you to have animosity towards your customer. YOUR customer has a life to live, responsibilities, and bills to pay - just like you do. Now, i understand the need for customers to support their "FLGS" and all, but thats just not right at all. You can't get pissy with your customers, because they don't buy their models from you. And if i were to ever feel that vibe from my "FLGS", i'd stop going there. As a customer, i'm there to have fun, and not have an anxiety/salty-prone salesman looking at me with disdain, over what i'm putting on the table. You want my money? You need to work for, kid. Because with how expensive this shit is, there is no way that i'm not buying my models from somewhere else. On the OTHER hand, i see purchasing stuff from my FLGS as a 'mercy', more than anything else - that is also not a healthy attitude to have, but it is most-definitely one that your ilk have fostered in the various tabletop gaming communities. You provide a place to play games at, while hoping that they will spend money while there. Period. Thats it. Your relationship and thoughts on ANY customer should end there. When you start getting expectant, and blaming the game companies for your poor attitude towards your customers - that is exactly when you should start seeing your sales decline. It is, and always will be about providing the best customer sales and services. When you are providing that, you'll never have another worry about where your customers are getting their games and models from. Don't be putting that on the game companies, OR on your customers EVER!!!

You want my money? Have a big fridge full of bottled drinks, a variety of snacks, and run event sales every so often. 10-15% for a weekend is a REALLY big deal, and will help you drive your sales. I can understand that frustration, but to thumbnail and create a clickbait (your words from in the comments) title of a game being dead when that's completely wrong is just using your platform to try to push it down, which just sucks. Your critiques of the game itself are rooted in the previous edition because you haven't played or seen the current edition, and you keep talking about how small their footprint is at conventions when that's verifiably not the case. You guys chose to go GW for your personal choices you called out in the video, but crapping on other games that are still being played and growing makes no sense. Come on, guys. You clearly didn't choose to do any research about the current state of the game or the company outside of the brief look on the website you mentioned at the very end as a footnote about models being used in The Other Side and Malifaux. I'm sorry you had a negative experience trying to acquire and sell the game in 2e. That certainly had issues with the game's popularity locally, but it is not a representation of the whole. Don't lash out at the game and, by proxy, one of the nicest mini game communities out there by calling their favorite game/hobby dead.
