Mostly the swell. I never sail in swell, unless I am wave sailing. I had no crashes on the straights except the one where I hurt my hand braking before the start line. And I don’t practice foil very much. But I actually found something in my technique in the last two races that made it less physical to foil. Now I hope to be able to find that setup next time but right now the hand has to heal. 8 days later it is still hurting.

Hi Kasper, what are your thoughts about the sail touching the boom? Some say this would stabilize the sail a bit. Also +1 for increasing the entry speed on the gybes. You are so fast on the straight lines, you should be coming flying out of the gybes. Keep up the amazing work! Cheers

I have found that my sails are faster and lighter in the hands with some positive outhaul. So I avoid the sails touching the boom. In the light winds I aim for it almost touching. Try to see my video about booms, there is a sectioin about the following the board width

To all the people mentioning the lines are too long. Kasper uses the Liberty harness, I need about 4 inches more length compared to a waist harness with that harness. On my big slalom board I tend to use my waist harness again as my 34 inch harness lines are too short for me on the Drake/Liberty, especially going downwind. It feels like I'm standing upright. I think Kasper and I are both pretty tall as well (190+?) so the boom at chin level is obviously pretty high. I have no clue how I used 22-24 inch lines just a few years ago...
@surferkaspert4679

@@krautsurfer8181 around 190 for me. The liberty harness demands longer lines. I switched from 26-34 to 38-46 on the big sail.

All pretty good, maybe just a bit too much hanging back on a crucial part of the jibe and thus killing the speed. The last two jibes in this video are already better. Always nice to see (and feel) the big board flying.
@pietroprestininzi

Agree. Moreover, before jibing, try to move the backhand grip as far back as you can, pull hard while extending the front hand as much as possible to the outside of the corner. Then, after the jibe, grab the boom from below on the new tack, so you waste less time adjusting for the new course.

Harness lines should be around 30 to be efficient. It looks like you have to work hard to transform power from the sail to speed, this makes it also harder to concentrate in technique. Maybe you've put the boom too high to compensate for too long harness lines. It looks like gusty and very powered for 8.4 sail, the board is doing fine, maybe put the mastbase 5mm to the front. Before the jibe make sure you go at least 10 seconds downwind first for more speed and in the jibe you can push a bit on the boom to keep planing better when you loose speed in the jibe. Next time jibe around a bouy😊 Overall not bad at all but some fine tuning is possible I think. Best regards, Marco

My humble opinion. I really think the lines are to long for this type of sailsize making you correct constantly and looking a bit unstable. You keep closing te sail and the gap to the board. I think this is causing you to lose speed. Gibes are good, maybe the official way to do it is different but you're planing out of the gibe and that's what counts to me.

The carve gybes look great and it looks a lovely spot. I think I sail with 24 inch harness lines on flat water (or at least as short as I can make them) but I still use a seat harness. I have tried making them longer as adjustable, but I think my arms are too short as it doesn't suit my sailing style at the moment. A few say longer is better, I think I need to practice.

02:55 is called bent over row. Very cool video. Yes I am only arriving at middle age at 42 but one HAS to do strength training even before reaching your 40's. I like to do light weights too. No breaks between sets. Laird Hamilton had a workout where he'd do a single exercise for 5 minutes or until muscle failure and the straight to the next. It works really well. Good to see the squats and lunges. So many folks have weak hamstring and glutes, and that invariably leads to knee problems. I'm a staunch windsurfer but also an ultra runner. Running has helped my windsurfing tremendously. I mostly wave sail, I don't own slalom gear at all but strong legs does help. I'm lucky to stand all day at my desk. Keeping posting videos, hope to see you in Cape Town one day?

Thanks for the great comment. I have been working out more or less since I was 15 and I started windsurfing when I was 15, probably that’s is why I never had any serious injuries. I have been slalom sailing for 8 years now before that only freestyle and wave. I think the different disciplines help you to get better to the other disciplines. I will for sure test the Laird Hamilton approach you described later this year. I hope to do Cape Town and a trip to Luderitz at some point. But I don’t know when

Good tip on tightening the battens first, to ensure that they are all the way in the front of the batten pocket. I would recommend to use the removable outhaul pulley from Severne, instead of the Chinook ones. It is more compact, doesn't catch the lines on very loose outhaul settings, and it is smoother against the sail when rolled up.

Great video, keep up the good work. I have Naish RN high aspect foil sail and use on fin all the time, just need enough wind to get going, and then the wind can increase to the max and the sail can handle it no issue. High aspect sails have a short boom, so gybing is so easy, and top end is quite respectable. So I agree with your point, let's give our wives a chance to cool down by not having to buy a million bits of kit to store all over the house. Windsurfing is not about needing a spreadsheet to figure out what kit you need to take the the water. Water Speed Beer. Amen
