I can invert on a straight pole, but I get stuck in the bucket on my big grips. Why is that?

Fast question: this is calculated based on gripping always at the top of the pole, right?

What if your kid is a foot or more under, then on, then 6 inches under, then a foot under, then a foot and a half under? This is after catching his step and it being on every time we catch it

Wow. Całkowicie to poczułem. Bycie narcyzem to taka smutna choroba. Zwłaszcza zreformowany narcyz. Właściwie to zacząłem im naprawdę współczuć. Thanks Shawn. Great channel and post. I totally agree with you that there should be international testing and labeling standards that all pole manufactures should follow for flex number and for weight rating (or some other rating system), that takes performance and safety into account. That being said, without getting all sciencey, neither alone is sufficient to describe a pole dynamics and safety. Flex number is stiffness (Youngs elastic modulus, or spring constant), not its ultimate strength (yield with safety ratio). Weight rating is a simplification, as it has no information on the energy a vaulter might impart into the pole with the run and jump. A 220lb footballer running slowly is not the same as a 165# tall sprinter. A long run and a short run are not the same dynamic energy, why would you use the same weight rated pole? I feel that a [maximum] weight / safety rating is needed to ensure a degree of safety in the sport. However, it is sort of useless for picking a pole for success and progressions all by itself. Flex number is way better aligned for that. I encourage anyone that cares, to measure the flex of all their prospective poles (with the proper pole orientation down) from the base to the upper hand position. Just use a consistent weight dangled from a cord for each, exactly in the center. The deflection progression will be the stiffness progression (not exactly linear as the weave is not uniform and the bend arc is an arc (not a small angle). And remember, a stiffer pole is a faster pole (wind up and unwind), so the standards will likely move in and less depth in the pit.

You nailed it! Butnto keep it simple, My take is that with some sort of a universal flex system vaulters are more likely to know what their next pole is which will keep them safer. Most kids here in the states go based on the weight label alone. To me its like trying to guess the next weight in the weight room without any numbers on the weights. I'm simply saying, universal flex numbers are more helpful than random weight labels nd flex numbers we have now for knowing the, next pole.

This stuff is awesome. I pole vaulted in Jr high and high school in the late 70s. We had no coaches who knew how to teach this and you had to figure it out on your own. Our school only had the crappy old brown sky poles. The on I used was a 14 ft that had been cut down to 13 ft. It was for a 149 lb person and I only was 135 lbs I cleared 12 foot with it. So keep doing what your doing this is the greatest event in all of track and field

Hey Shawn, I’ve been watching our videos since I was jumping in high school back in 2018. I coach now for my high school and I have one athlete who is very tall, athletic, and has great runway speed, planting ability but his hands slide 9 times out of ten when he plants. Just curious if you have any insight on hand sliding? Much appreciated, you’re the man hope you’re doing well!

Insane… truly… at a meet opener. Still 10 WR behind Bubka but I agree with someone who said he can probably hit 6.32 in practice but he’s milking it for the prize money all the way to his max just like SB did.

If someone is jumping on a 14 165, when attempting to bump up to a 15 155 being that there is similar resistance if the hands are at the same height on the 15’ 155 as the 14’165, or should the resistance feel less than what was felt on the 14’ 165 if the grip closed to the end of the 15’ 155

So I am a middle schooler and the high school coach moved me to high school. I have so much pressure because he could move me back down if I do one thing wrong. Today was probably the worst day of practice because I wasn’t doing it right my coach told me to go to the middle schoolers. I put so much pressure on myself because for me pole vault is my whole ego. The boys at my school hate me and if I got kicked down I would never hear the end of it. Please help me figure out what to do because I don’t think I can keep trying to pretend to try. I need help or I might quit pretty soon

Katie, you're awesome no matter what! The fact you're in middle school pole vaulting is cool. The fact you're in middle school with the ability to jump with high schoolers is insane! Just remember, pole vault is just something you do, it's not who you are. Try to learn from those tough days, thays where the most growth comes from. You're freaking awesome to me!

I just finished your book and really needed to hear the mental health side of things. I vault at a D3 school which has very little pressure since there’s no scholarships but I put way too much pressure on myself because I’ve only been vaulting for a year now and don’t feel like I vault high enough to be on the team. I was always super scared of bars after landing on them countless times. and I always had to close my eyes after takeoff to avoid the fear of the bar. My coach told me to not be scared of it cause it’s just a wimpy stick that’s literally meant to fall. He said if I’m that scared of it I should stop jumping to the bar and jump over the bar with room to ensure I don’t have to touch the bar. Idk why but that little mental trick helped me get 9”2’ that meet when my pr before was 8’6”. I was stuck at 8’6” for weeks. If only I knew I could just simply jump over the bar and then I won’t hit it 😂. I finished your book today and really needed to hear more of the mental health side of things, this video helped so much. My last meet of the season is this weekend and I feel very confident and mentally “down the right track” now. As a fellow Minnesotan, the toboggan analogy helped me understand this a lot more! So thank you for making mental health around this sport an easy and accessible resource
